Samantha's POV Quickly, I called Dona back, and she picked up immediately. "Mom!" Her voice was very breathless, almost frantic. "Dona, sweetheart..." "Mom, I'm so sorry," she interrupted, words tumbling out in a rush. "I'm so, so sorry for the way I spoke to you the other day. I was scared I'd lost you forever. I said terrible things and I didn't mean any of it, I swear I didn't, I was just—" "Dona, it's okay" I said gently. She went quiet for a second, like she wasn't sure she'd heard me right. "It's okay," I repeated. "I understand. You were upset and you lashed out and I get it. To be honest, I haven't been very reasonable myself. I miss you, honey. I miss you and August so much back at the house." Dona laughed. "You miss us? Mom, we used to fight so much when we lived under your roof. What exactly do you miss about that?" I smiled and shrugged.
