Chapter 161

As Oliver spoke, he coughed up a mouthful of blood. The crowd erupted in anger. Other buildings only had to pay three pounds, so why were they being charged six?But seeing Oliver take the beating for them, all that anger got stuck in their throats.Still, it didn't sit right.Someone finally shouted, "Fine, we'll hand over food, but make the people on the 18th floor pay first!"The others froze for a second, then quickly backed him up. "Yeah! If they pay, we'll pay, too. Not a pound less!""And the 17th floor, too! They've got plenty of food stashed away. If you've got the nerve, make them hand it over instead of picking on people like us!"The words spread like wildfire. The whole crowd grew louder, more agitated. The leader frowned. It was clear that if they didn't break the 17th and 18th floors today, there was no way this would end. That worked out fine. They had come for the 18th floor, anyway. Once those people were crushed, no one else would dare resist. With Oliver l

Chapter 162

Nicole's words instantly set the leader off. He raised his gun, ready to fire.At the last second, Oliver rushed forward to stop him. "Don't use the gun. We can talk this out."He turned and tried to persuade Nicole. "Nicole, I know you're capable, but don't pick a fight you can't win. Things aren't the same anymore. You're not short on food anyway. Staying alive is what matters. Don't risk your life over this. If you trust me, I'll negotiate for you. I'll try to get the amount lowered. How about that?"Nicole looked at him. "You're working pretty hard for them. How much are they paying you?""What did you say?!" Oliver froze, then his face twisted with anger. "I nearly got myself killed trying to lower the protection rations for everyone, and this is how you repay me? You think I'm in on it?""You're wearing layers that thick and somehow ended up covered in blood. Are you sure that's not just chicken blood or fake dye?"Her words landed like a bomb. The survivors all snapped

Chapter 163

Nicole didn't stop. She gripped her blade and walked straight toward Oliver. His legs gave out beneath him. "Th-this is murder! It's illegal!""Oh, so you do know what illegal means." Nicole smiled faintly, her eyes cold. "You took Faye and the others out to trade for food, then worked with those collectors behind everyone's back. That's not illegal?""N-No, it's a misunderstanding!""Really? Then how about we open your door and see exactly how much you've got stored inside?"Oliver tried to argue, but Nicole had no patience left. She drove the knife into him.A sharp scream tore out of his throat.Nicole didn't aim for his heart. The blade sank into his shoulder instead. "Do you think you've got nine lives? You keep going after us like you won't pay for it. What made you think we wouldn't end you?"She grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to the window, then shoved him out. This wasn't a flood anymore. The world was locked in a deep freeze. From the 16th floor, there w

Chapter 164

Gabrielle insisted for a while, and in the end, the two households each sent back a pound of arrowroot flour. At the same time, Victor gave Nicole's group a homemade "bike." The back was fitted with a heating device. As long as someone sat on it and pedaled hard, it generated power. The heat pipes would release warmth into the room.It worked as both an exercise and a way to raise the indoor temperature.Victor adjusted his glasses, his smile gentle and reserved. "I'm still looking for parts. Once I find them, I can modify it into a charging system."The 18th floor already stayed warm enough, and they were even sweating half the time, so Nicole didn't take it. "Keep the bike for now. When you've upgraded it to charge devices, then bring it over."After seeing Nicole off, Gabrielle didn't know what to do with herself. Embarrassment weighed on her."I didn't expect the other two households to be that selfish. They were clearly home, but they hid instead of coming out. Something's

Chapter 165

That was Nicole's safe zone. Not just physically, but mentally, too. She needed somewhere she could finally let her guard down. So, Nicole looked genuinely confused. "Don't you think you're reading too much into this?"Yes, she had storage space, but she didn't have some miracle cheat. She didn't even know how long she would survive. In the apocalypse, the scariest thing wasn't the disasters. It was people.Wasn't Edward's lesson enough? How could she still believe in love after that?Seeing she wasn't pretending, Hughie was completely thrown. "It's that obvious, and you really didn't notice?""Notice what?"Hughie let out a helpless sigh. "If he didn't care about you, why would he help train your dog?""I taught Poppy how to read.""Out of all of us, why is he only teaching you hand-to-hand combat?"Nicole looked at him, then at Jeremy. "Do either of you have the talent for it?"Hughie and Jeremy fell silent. They really didn't."When you slipped on the rooftop, he shoved

Chapter 166

It was one thing not to know about Zeph's feelings. Once Nicole did, she couldn't pretend she didn't.Still, she had her doubts about what Hughie's group said.It wasn't that she was clueless. It was just…hard to say. Zeph seemed kind of into her, but also maybe not.So what was she supposed to do now?He hadn't confessed anything. It wasn't like she could just reject him out of nowhere. What if she was reading it wrong? They lived right next door; they saw each other all the time and still had to work together going forward. The thought alone made her cringe. After hearing her out, the others realized it was tricky, too.Hughie, full of confidence, said, "When someone's in love, you can see it in their eyes. It's impossible to hide. Want us to test him for you?"Nicole frowned. "No. I'll figure it out myself."Back in her room, she flopped onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. She reached up and touched her face. She knew she was attractive, but she wouldn't say she was s

Chapter 167

Nicole hadn't expected Zeph to take it so well, and she let out a quiet breath. "You're a good guy. You'll find someone you really like.""Yeah. You too.""So… We're still teaming up?""Of course. If you're okay with it.""I am. You're the best partner on the 18th floor."Now that everything was out in the open, Nicole felt lighter. At the same time, there was a faint sense of regret. If the disasters had never happened, she wouldn't have let someone like him slip by.Zeph watched her head back inside, then turned to open his own door. Only then did he notice his palms were damp with sweat. There was no end to the disasters. He hadn't planned to confess anything to Nicole. He still had Poppy to look after, and no one knew what tomorrow would bring. He hadn't expected her to bring it up first. It was the first time he had ever felt something for a girl, and it ended just like that.He opened the door, and Poppy rushed over. "Zeph!"He lowered his gaze, the tension gone and re

Chapter 168

Nicole told Gabrielle to go back inside and lock her door, then turned to Nelson. "Let's go."They reached the stairwell door. Nicole was about to step out when Zeph suddenly pulled her back and moved in front, heading down first.Nicole, bumped out of the lead, froze.Right. A trained officer knew how to handle a fight. Taking point to draw fire made sense. However, things weren't what they used to be. Anyone reckless enough to charge ahead was long gone, especially when the other side had real weapons. How many, they didn't know yet. With that thought, Nicole steadied herself and fell in behind Zeph.Bang, bang, bang! They had barely gone a dozen steps when the shots exploded through the stairwell. The other side didn't play by the rules, and they weren't short on ammo. They opened fire immediately, clearly aiming to wipe out the 18th floor.Zeph moved with precision. Shooting upward from the 16th floor created awkward angles. The bullets either slammed into the railing or

Chapter 169

Finally, the 18th floor had real weapons. Anyone reckless enough to rush up now was as good as dead."Hughie, we're armed now!""Jeremy, time to step up!"With weapons in hand, they felt like they owned the world. The two of them were instantly fired up, backs straightening with newfound confidence. From today on, nothing was going to scare them!Of course, no one paid attention to their inner hype. Beatrice covered her nose and rushed up. When she saw Nelson on the ground, bleeding heavily, she froze. "What happened?"Nicole pulled her blade free. "He got bought out by those collectors. Tried to stab us in the back.""D-Don't kill me." Nelson's face was pale, his voice shaking as he begged. "I didn't want to do it. They took my son. They said if I didn't cooperate, I'd never see him again."Nicole didn't bother arguing. "You know what you did. If you made the choice, you take the consequences."Hiding when things got dangerous was one thing. Wanting protection from the 18th

Chapter 170

Nicole had no patience left. "If living next to us is such a problem, then pack up and move. Go as far as you want.""Why should we move?" Karen shot back, glaring at her. "You got my son taken and hurt my husband! You think this is over?"Nicole let out a sigh. "What exactly do you want?"Nelson grabbed his wife's arm, forcing himself to stay upright as he looked at Nicole and the others. "Everyone, I'm sorry. What I did was wrong. I never should've turned on you, but I had no choice. Billy's only eight. If I didn't do what they said, they would've killed him. I brought this on myself, but the kid didn't do anything. Can you help me get him back?"Nicole didn't even know how he could say that out loud.If he had stood with the Goodmans from the start and defended the building together, if he had told the 18th floor the truth after his son was taken, she might not have risked her life to save the boy, but she knew how those people operated. At the very least, she could've given
