Nicole still had plenty of questions, but with Jacob there, she and Zeph couldn't talk about them openly. Before long, the deep-water dock came into view. Dozens of submarines rose faintly above the surface, their dark gray hulls looking like massive beasts resting in the water.Only a few dozen were visible from where they stood, but far more were stationed below the surface.Even a mid-sized military submarine was enormous, about 160 feet long and 25 feet wide.Jacob called over his assistant, who began walking Nicole and the others through the submarine's exterior, basic systems, propulsion, and other features.Technically, Cola wasn't allowed inside. Animals could be disruptive, and in an emergency, they might panic or become hard to control. If one accidentally bumped a control or flipped a switch, the consequences could be serious.Nicole insisted, "He'll be fine. We've trained him almost like a military dog over the years. When we first got to the base, the K-9 unit nearly

Through the observation window, Nicole saw countless creatures moving through the water. Squid, octopuses, sea snakes, sharks, glowing jellyfish, and plenty of species she couldn't even identify. The deep blue ocean and strange marine life were breathtaking. She could also make out other submarines in the distance, all from the military base.Nicole watched the creatures outside and frowned. "Don't they look...bigger than they used to?"And not just bigger. Uglier, too.Jacob explained, "During the extreme heat, the polar ice caps melted and released ancient viruses into the ocean. A lot of marine life mutated. "They didn't just grow larger. Some became deformed, and many turned much more aggressive."Once, I took a group of trainees out and we ran into a pack of bull sharks. They were several times their normal size and actually attacked the submarine. "Their bite force was incredible. If the hull hadn't been made from reinforced materials, they might've damaged it."It was

The moment Nicole and the others entered the base, she went on high alert. Even so, someone noticed them almost immediately. She deliberately wandered around the administrative hall for a while and eventually confirmed that the people watching her weren't soldiers. They were scavengers who still hadn't given up on targeting them.As long as the military wasn't involved, Nicole wasn't worried. She still had plenty of points left on her card, so she traded for more than 100 oxygen packs. She also wanted to stock up on gasoline and diesel, but the base didn't sell fuel in bulk. The only option was to fill up vehicles directly, and the prices were outrageous. In the end, she spent the rest on coal. Two truckloads came to about seventy tons. If she ever needed it, that much would last a very long time. The only problem was that the coal yard was outside the base, so she would have to drive out and pick it up herself.Nicole put away the receipt and decided to collect it another day.

Maybe the base made Hughie feel secure, or maybe he had genuinely started to enjoy military life. Either way, he couldn't resist bragging with Jeremy. "Man, if we'd joined a few years earlier, think we'd be squad leaders or company commanders by now?"Jeremy shook his head. "I think the timing worked out just right. If I'd come here a few years earlier, I never would've met Diana. "And back then, we didn't have the skills or experience we have now. We might not even have passed the enlistment test. "At best, we'd probably be out scavenging and risking our lives every day."Nicole laughed. "Just keep working hard. The promotions will come eventually. When all this is finally over, and you're both high-ranking officers, don't forget about me."Jeremy and Hughie immediately started piling on the praise. "No matter how far we get, we'll never catch up to you, Nicole."You two brought back enough rare metals to get the base factories running at full capacity again. All those ext

Zeph nodded. "This place is remote. It should be safe. We're all exhausted, so let's get some sleep."The four of them went into the tent, turned off the lights, and settled in for the night. Before long, loud snoring drifted out from inside, human and dog alike, blending into one ridiculous chorus.Cola was the worst. He was completely dead to the world. A mountain could've come crashing down, and he probably still wouldn't have woken up.Several shadowy figures crept toward the tent with their weapons drawn. The man in front had barely reached it when he heard a faint sound behind him. He immediately turned around. They hadn't brought any lights because they didn't want to alert their targets. It was pitch-black, and he couldn't see anything.Everything was quiet. He figured he must've imagined it.He reached for the tent flap again, only to feel something cold press against the back of his head.He froze and immediately switched on a light. A young girl stood beside the t
