~ Mara ~ "We didn't start to drift apart overnight. I wish it had happened that fast, so I could pinpoint exactly where it all went wrong." It builds in the small spaces. The pauses that last a second too long. The looks that don’t quite land. The way we talk around things instead of into them. And the worst part is, if someone walked into this room right now, they wouldn’t see it. They’d see a man recovering, a woman sitting beside him, hands occasionally brushing, voices calm. They’d think we’re fine. We’re not. “You’re doing it again,” I say, not looking up from the cup in my hands. The coffee is cold. I’ve been holding it for twenty minutes and haven’t taken a sip. Cole shifts slightly in the bed. He doesn’t ask what I mean. That tells me he already knows. “Doing what?” he asks anyway, because that’s how this goes now. We both know, but we still make each other say it out loud. “drifting off.” I finally look at him. “You go quiet and disappear into your thoughts.”
