LIORAÉ“So when are you going to tie the knot?” Lora’s question hung in the air like poison. My hand balled underneath the table, a steady gasp escaping my lips. I pulled an awkward, easy smile and leaned in. “We are seeing how it goes for now.” Those words I had heard from Evan for a long time; he had so many variations of them that I hadn't even realised. Whenever I asked him what he was seeing in our future, he'd put his hands on my shoulders and pull a smile too convincing to see how much of a jerk he was. “Not to worry, Lioraé; let’s see what the future holds.” Before now, I had thought of it as a pretty normal statement, but now, hearing myself, I knew how manipulative it was. Refusal to take responsibility for my actions, but then this was fake. Why was I spiralling about it? Lora seemed to notice as she held her husband’s hand; the gaze between them was electric, and then she turned to me. As if she were trying to convince me that love existed. “It’s the first time I he

LIORAÉ“Twenty thousand dollars?” My hand dropped from the tag of the dress as I turned to Soren with fear in my eyes. The dress cost my entire month's salary. I was sure that we would get something I was going to be able to pay back, but I couldn't pay that back; there was no way it could happen. “We can’t shop here,” I declared. “Do you not like any of their selections?” Soren asked, and I was tempted to lie. To say yes and pull us into any thrift store by the corner. How could I possibly buy a twenty-grand dress? “We have a few more luxury dresses over here,” the attendant helping us pointed out. I glanced at her name tag – Vera. I wanted to tell her that she didn't need to be so helpful. I was fine and could navigate through on my own.“It’s not that.” I moved closer to Soren, my mouth close to his ear as I whispered low enough so he was the only one who heard, “It’s too pricey.” “You don’t have to worry about that,” he said and dismissed the attendant with a wave of his han

LIORAÉHe held my face and pressed his lips onto mine. I closed my eyes, shutting out all of the voices screaming at me to stop this madness. His head lowered to my neck and dropped lingering kisses over my body. I pushed him to the bed and climbed on him. His eyes widened at my action. His hand grabbed my waist and pulled me down, my chest colliding with his. “Do you know the meaning of this?” He asked gently, as if he was trying to be sure that I was not making a mistake. I wasn't even sure myself, so how could I assure him? “I don’t want this to be another one-night stand.” He was right; I sat up and shook my head with a sigh before getting off him. I stood in silence with my back to him for a while before his hand snuck gently around my waist. I tried to spin in his hands, but his hand stayed tight on me. “We don't have to rush anything.” I waited for him to assure me more. Why did I want him to assure me? “I want you, but even more than that, I want you to be comfortable w

LIORAÉ ‘Soren Vale can't marry a lowlife.’ Her words echoed in my mind as I stood there. She was right; this was wrong. I couldn't be with Soren, and the baby in me would only complicate things more. “She’s right, Soren… Mr Vale, you and I…” “Don’t say it,” he cut me off. “She is wrong because she knows absolutely nothing about me, about us and the relationship we share.” That should have been enough to calm my weary heart; instead, it made it worse. There was nothing between us except a nightstand that was already spiralling more than it should. “I am just an assistant; she is more on your level. Your mother would never accept me; the world would never accept me,” I recited. Why was I building castles in the air like I was bursting out of a book? “I am not to the vale standard.” My eyes moved from the basket on the floor to the magnificent house I am standing in. Even if I put together all I would ever make, I would never stand beside him. “Don’t listen to her, Lioraé.” He

LIORAÉMy eyes fluttered open after a few hours. The sun was already tucked behind the clouds fully, and it was a beautiful nighttime scene. Soren had insisted that I get some rest, even though I was adamant about it. It did feel good to be asleep for such a long time. I felt better now that I had that long rest. I guess he was really right about one thing. With how hovering he had acted all day, I was shocked to see that he was by my bedside. I got out of bed to check for him. Moving through the silent and dimly lit house was such a bliss I never knew I would get to experience. I stopped when I saw boxes lined up in Soren’s hallway. I opened them one after the other to see the room that I had spent years curating crumbled up in boxes.I stared at how they looked in contrast to the clean aesthetic of his house, suddenly run down by my entire worth in a few boxes. I knew that with Soren’s name, my parents would agree at once to have my things moved. I was still trying to think of h
