I sealed my mouth over her other nipple and sucked hard, drawing the stiff peak between my lips while my tongue flicked the sensitive tip. Her back arched foward, a broken moan tearing from her throat as her fingers tightened in my hair. I switched to the other breast, lavishing the same attention, biting down just enough to make her moan before soothing it with wet strokes of my tongue. Her skin tasted clean and faintly of whatever lotion she used. I kept at it until both nipples were flushed and shiny with my spit, her chest heaving under me.Then I tugged at the thin lace of her panties. She lifted her hips without being asked, giving me the access I needed. I slid the scrap of fabric down her thighs, past her knees, and finally off her ankles, letting it drop onto the table beside her. She was bare now, completely open to me, the soft pink of her pussy already glistening. She lifted both legs onto the table as she parted them wider. Her palms flat against the wood behind her, for

The next day happened fast. It was finally the day of the auction. The evening, rather. Donovan had been gone all day. Ever since I’d come clean with my feelings last night, he’d been avoiding me. He hadn’t said a single word to me all morning, hadn’t even looked in my direction when I brought his coffee. Just a curt nod and then he was gone, disappearing into meetings I wasn’t invited to.I hated that I’d made him feel heavy enough that he had to run away from me.But I didn’t regret it.It was 7 PM on the dot when the doorbell rang. I opened it to find Donovan standing there with another woman — the designer who’d made my dress.I was already clean, already ready. I could have done everything else myself. But he’d brought her to dress me up anyway. So much for someone who claims to have no feelings for me.We got dressed in near silence, the designer fussing over the final details of a deep black gown that cinched at my waist and flared elegantly toward the floor. And in no time, we

I stumbled into the crowd, my vision blurred with tears, my chest heaving with the effort of trying to hold myself together. I spotted Addison at the corner, laughing, spinning slowly in Ren’s arms as they danced beneath the chandeliers.I didn’t want to disrupt that. I didn’t want to drag her away from the one good thing happening tonight just because I was falling apart from someone who clearly didn’t give two shits how I feel.So I turned and headed straight for the exit instead.Still, Donovan didn’t come running.I glanced back once , just once, expecting, hoping to see him pushing through the crowd, calling my name, chasing after me, anything.Nothing.The tears blurred my vision worse now, and I kept walking, stumbling slightly on my heels, like someone drunk on emotion with nothing stable left in her head. I didn’t care anymore.I just needed air. Distance. Anything that wasn’t that ballroom, wasn’t his cold eyes refusing to look at me, wasn’t his words slicing through me like

My stomach growled, loud and hollow in the silent hallway.Seventy-two hours. That’s how long it had been since I’d actually eaten. I’d been so consumed with the auction, so busy dismissing every single thing Aurélie tried to say to me, that I’d forgotten to feed myself. My body had become tired. Everything had become dull except the war raging inside my own head.I pulled out my phone and ordered something. Barely food, more coffee than anything with actual substance. My hands were shaking too hard to think clearly about nutrition. While I waited, my mind dragged me backward, unwillingly, to that night. To the way she’d looked at me afterward, wrecked and open and terrifyingly honest.“I think I’m in love with you.”I didn’t know what I was in that moment. I still don’t know if I’m being honest with myself. The word had caught me clean in the chest, sudden and devastating, and yet somehow it had felt like the other end of some cut rope I’d been dragging around for years had finally b

The car pulled into the lot. But this place was different.“This isn’t your villa.”“I know.”“Is this your home?”“Yes.”“Oh. Okay.”I didn’t say anything after that, just let the silence stretch between us like a living thing, thick and uncertain. Something about him seemed warmer now. Calmer. Real, in a way I wasn’t used to seeing.I tried to get out of the SUV myself, fumbling for the door handle, but he was lifting me into his arms before I even got the chance to decide whether I could manage on my own.“You can’t walk on your own. At least not yet.” I held onto his shoulders as his arm stayed firm beneath my thighs and back, carrying me like I weighed nothing at all. “Let me take care of you.”The house itself was the same as always — dark, brutalist architecture, sharp lines and cold stone. Except now it had some personal touches I’d never noticed before. Paintings lining the hallway. Framed photos, not of him, but of his parents. Smiling. Younger. Happy, in a way that felt alm
