NALANII hummed my favourite song as I bounced on my way to Esme’s room. We had promised to meet up so we could go to town to see the new festival that was happening in the pack. I finally got my father’s approval to leave the pack house, and I didn’t want to waste any more minutes.“… is madness. She would never agree to it,” Mom’s voice rang out as I passed Dad’s office. “She is never supposed to leave the pack. What would happen when they find out who she is?”My legs halted. I knew they were talking about me.“What use is she if they find out? It’s not like we can make use of her powers. It’s better to let them take her. At least, she will bring us protection,” Dad argued coldly in that tone he used when he didn’t want anyone going against his orders.Unease curled in the pit of my stomach. I didn’t need to hear the full conversation to know that I wouldn’t like it.“But we promised to keep her safe,” Mom whispered, defeat creeping into her voice. “How do we even break the news to

NALANI“Lani”, Esme’s timid voice invaded my thoughts as she peeked her head through the bedroom. “Can I come in?" She asked carefully."I sat up with a tired sigh and rubbed my eyes. They were dried and puffy from crying all night. “Yes,” I croaked, my voice raspy from all the crying I did at night.I couldn’t sleep no matter how hard I tried. I had avoided my parents the entire day. I didn’t want to see them unless they wanted to tell me that I didn’t need to get married to Samael anymore.Esme slipped inside, her dark curls bouncing. She took one look at me curled on the window frame, and her face crumpled.“Lani,” she crossed the room and dropped beside me, pulling me into her arms. “You look like hell.”“I feel worse,” I muttered into her shoulders, fighting the urge to cry again. My face felt swollen already. She rubbed slow circles on my back. “I know this feels like the end of the world, but maybe you should be positive. What if life in the Blackthorn pack doesn’t end up as bad

NALANII sat still, trying hard not to fall off the beast as it bounded through the moonlit forest to the Blackthorne pack. I had not expected Samael to ride with me. Maybe he thought I would escape. He had not said a word since we left, but his presence was suffocating. My skin prickled with every touch as his hands controlled the reins from behind me. I wanted to be anywhere but in front of him.I had tried avoiding touching him, but it was impossible. Every jerk of the rein pulled me against him, and the constant growl told me he wasn’t happy with it as well.I forced my mind to go back home so I didn’t have to bother with thinking about his skin on mine.I couldn’t say a proper goodbye because Samael was in a hurry to get back. My mother kept pleading that I forgive her, while Father just said I would be fine. Esme had hugged me so tightly until a glare from one Bloodthorn warrior had her stepping back.I remember how I had squeaked like a little child when Samael suddenly picked m

NALANIThe woman before me was stunning in a different way from Amara. Her beauty wasn’t soft like the woman in the image; it was seductive. Her eyes swept over me, hiding irritation behind amusement. “Out of all the options, they chose her? A weakling from a weak pack? She isn’t worthy of being Samael’s Luna,” she spat at last.I froze as the word struck harder than it should have. I sensed the malice she wore like a second skin. I opened my mouth to tell her that I didn’t want the title, that I didn’t want any of this, but…Samael appeared shortly behind her, and there was something that seemed like longing in her eyes before they changed to challenge when she turned back to me. He didn’t touch her, but he was standing too close. There was no way they didn’t have anything between them. Was she a lover perhaps? If she was, why did they bring me instead? She whirled around to face him. “Did you really accept her as your Luna? What about…”“Lilith” Mabel appeared; her expression harde

SAMAELThe door clicked shut behind Lilith, and the silence that followed was suffocating.I stood there, jaw clenched, telling myself that I had only intervened because Lilith had crossed a line. I knew how vicious she could be when it came to people she didn’t like, and I had promised Dallor that his child would remain safe in my lands. That was all.None of this had anything to do with the way my wolf snarled when I caught her scent of distress from down the hall, or the way my legs had moved before I could realise what I was doing. It was keeping my word. Nothing more.I turned to face her, and she was watching me, arms wrapped around herself like she was trying to protect herself from me. Despite how vulnerable she looked, her chin was lifted and her shoulders squared like she was waiting for me to say something hostile, and she would be ready to brace herself and defend herself. She was different. Most wolves would have bared their necks in submission or scrambled to please me,

NALANIIt took a minute after I woke up to remember that I was no longer home. My eyes scanned the massive room, the lack of Esme and the lack of the noise that was always present back home.I missed my home.“Ironic, isn’t it?" I chuckled bitterly to myself.I would spend days telling Esme about my plans to run away so I could be free. I wanted out of always being locked up, but now that I got my wish, I wanted to go back home.I found it hard to sleep last night, and it wasn’t because I was in a new place. The discussion with Samael lingered in my thoughts all day.I hadn’t planned to make any demands, but I meant every word. The memory of his reaction replayed in my head. There was none. He had looked at me with that blank expression that I was coming to hate.I shook the thought out of my head. “What’s done is done," I muttered. “If he decides to make my life hell, I’ll fight back with everything I have. I’m not going to be bullied.”I dragged myself out of the bed and prepared fo

NALANIMy stomach churned. “Oh.”Suddenly, her reactions made sense. Why she was wary of me, even now as we talked. “That’s why you didn’t like the arrangement. She was your best friend and your Luna."Mabel didn’t bother denying it. “Amara was the sister I never had. When Dad announced we’d be getting a new Luna, I was furious. It felt like…” She blinked, fighting the tears. “It felt like he was trying to erase her… replace her, like she had never been here.”“I’m not here to replace anyone,” I said softly. “I don’t plan to take her place. It’s…” The words tumbled out of me, but Mabel touched my arm lightly.“I know,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “It wouldn’t be fair if I blamed it on you.”I nodded, grateful that she understood and wasn’t blaming me because it seemed everyone else, including Samael believed I wanted to take her place. It was the last thing I wanted. I just wanted to…“I know you wouldn’t believe me, but Sammy wasn’t like this," she said after a while

SAMAELThe moment Nalani had dismissed Travin’s apology and continued talking to Mabel like he didn’t give a half-assed apology, something uninvited stirred in my chest.Respect.I didn’t expect her to be so brave. I told myself that the answer she gave back in her room the previous day was her trying to appear brave, but with this stunt, she wasn’t pretending. It was who she was.My gaze bore into the side of her face as she and Mabel laughed over something. I knew she could feel my eyes on her. She had almost looked in my direction twice now but forced herself not to.I forced my gaze back to my plate and continued eating. None of the pack members dared to send her glares after the move she pulled with Travin, and even the man himself was quiet for the rest of the evening.Knowing Travin, he would not get over the humiliation immediately. After dinner, Mabel pulled her out, and I didn’t stop them. I made my way to my office instead.“This one is braver than we thought," Adler mutter

SAMAELThe map of the pack was spread out on the table before me. Pins had been placed on the eastern borders with red marks where patrols had reported sightings of wolves that didn’t belong to my pack. They had become too frequent for us to ignore.“Three separate sightings in the last week alone,” Garrett, one of my senior warriors, said, tapping one of the pins with his fingers. “All points at the Duskmoor wolves."I leaned forward, studying the pattern. “Are they testing us or just passing through?”Adler shook his head. “It’s hard to say. But the frequency is concerning. You know those people spell nothing but danger."I nodded my head in agreement, my fingers tracing the patterns on the map. “They are getting too bold either way. We’ve warned them countless times to stay away from our lands.”“What do we do?” Garrett asked.“Double the patrol on the eastern borders. I want reports of every sighting immediately it happens.""Done," Garrett answered and left the room."Umm, Sam,"

NALANII had been in the Blackthorn pack for a week, and I was not going to lie and say that things had gotten easier. I had just learnt to live one day at a time.I spent my mornings in the library. The smell of the old books was comforting, and it gave me a sense of calm, like I wasn’t living in a pack where I was hated by more than half the members. In the afternoons, I spent my time with Mabel in the herb garden at the back of the pack house. Surprisingly, we had grown closer in the past week. I never thought we would become friends, but she was my only one so far. While in the evenings, I spent it in my room alone.“You are getting better at this," Mabel praised, glancing at the neat rows of lavender that I had just finished weeding with a smile. “Remember the first time you did this? You pulled the whole thing out."We both laughed at the memory. “I told you that I had never done it before. My parents kept me sheltered," I said, wiping the dirt on the apron that I had tied aroun
