The second bell echoed through the hallways as Anna, along with other students filtered into the biology class, their conversations fading into nervous whispers. At the front of the room, the whiteboard displayed the day’s agenda in neat handwriting: Biology Unit Test. Mrs. Williams stood beside a stack of test papers, waiting until every student had taken a seat before beginning. “Please clear your desks of everything except two pencils, a blue pen, a ruler, a calculator and an eraser,” she instructed calmly. Backpacks were zipped shut and placed beneath counters.
