All Chapters of The Second Wife's Revenge : Chapter 141 - Chapter 150

The first year passed the way first years do with small children. Fast and slow simultaneously. Days that lasted forever and months that disappeared.Grace at six months could sit up. Studied everything from this new vantage point with the focused attention of a scientist who'd just acquired better equipment. She examined objects by touching them with both hands. Testing weight. Testing texture. Testing what happened when you dropped them. She dropped things constantly. On purpose. Watching them fall. Watching them be retrieved. Testing whether the laws of physics were consistent. They were. She confirmed this approximately two hundred times.Daniel sat in a bouncer watching his sister conduct her experiments. He found everything she did fascinating. His face tracked her around the room. When she laughed he laughed. When she protested something he looked concerned. He'd arrived easy in a way Grace hadn't. Not better or worse. Just different. Where Grace had demanded engagement from th

The letters started arriving the week of publication. Not to the foundation. To the publisher. Forwarded to me in batches. Claire's team had set up a system. Screened. Sorted. The ones that needed foundation resources flagged and redirected. The ones meant for me personally set aside.I read them on Sunday mornings. Grace and Daniel with Marcus. The kitchen quiet. Coffee going warm in my hands.A woman in Ohio. Married eleven years. Read the chapter about Flynn correcting me at the dinner party. Recognized it as her own marriage in a way she'd never been able to name before. Left the following week.A woman in Glasgow. Her letter was translated by the publisher's international team. She'd read the UK edition. She wrote that she'd thought she was alone because her abuse looked nothing like the dramatic version. Too quiet. Too polite. Too invisible. The book named the quiet version. She found help.A man in Chicago. His daughter had been in an abusive relationship for three years. He ha

Grace at eight was exactly who she'd always promised to be.Serious. Opinionated. Possessed of a photographic memory she'd inherited from me and showed no inclination to hide from anyone. Her teacher had called twice this year already. Once about Grace correcting a factual error in a lesson. Once about Grace organizing the other children in her class to write a letter to the school board about library funding. Both times I'd apologized professionally and felt genuinely proud on the drive home.Daniel at seven was still his father's son. Warm where Grace was sharp. Patient where Grace was immediate. He'd inherited Marcus's ability to walk into a room and quietly become the person everyone was glad was there. His teacher called too. Just to say he was delightful and she hoped she'd get to teach him again someday.I was thirty-two.The number still occasionally surprised me. Not because I felt old. Because there'd been a version of my life where I couldn't have clearly imagined thirty-tw

Grace finished the memoir three weeks after our kitchen conversation. She came to find me on a Saturday morning. I was in my office. Writing. The third book still in progress. She knocked before entering, which she'd started doing this year. The awareness of other people's space emerging in her.She sat in the chair across from my desk. The one Marcus used when we talked through things."I finished it," she said."How do you feel?"She thought about it carefully. "Proud. And sad. And a bit angry at some of the people." A pause. "Mostly proud.""Proud of what?""Of you. That you kept going. That you built things even when you didn't have to."I looked at my eight-year-old daughter."Thank you," I said."I want to help. At the foundation." She held up a hand before I could respond. "Not in a real job way. I know I'm eight. But I want to come and see what it does. Help with something small. I want to understand how it works from the inside.""You're too young for most of what the foundat

Gloria Martinez was buried in Queens.A small cemetery. Quiet neighborhood. The grave modest. A headstone Marcus had arranged and paid for after we discovered the original marker had been damaged. Something real. Permanent. With her name and dates and a single line beneath:*She believed in people before they believed in themselves.*I'd chosen those words. We came on a Saturday in April. Spring arriving properly. The cemetery grass the specific green of things coming back to life after winter. Apple trees near the entrance budding. Birds doing what birds do in April.Grace held the flowers. Yellow tulips. She'd chosen them. I'd told her Gloria liked things that were cheerful without being fussy. Grace had nodded. Gone directly to yellow tulips.Daniel walked beside me. Seven years old. One hand in mine. The other occasionally picking up interesting things from the path and being redirected. This was his second visit to this grave. He didn't remember the first. He'd been too young. He
