Summer's Pov“He broke up with me again!!”Ruby's voice cracks on the word again, and before I can even process what she's saying, she's throwing herself into my arms like the world just ended. Her whole body shakes with sobs, mascara already streaking down her perfect cheeks, and I catch her weight automatically even though I've been through this exact scene approximately seventeen times in the past year."I can't believe we aren't going to get married anymore," she wails into my shoulder, and I have to bite my tongue to keep from saying what we're all thinking: you were never getting married, Ruby. You're seventeen.Over her head, I catch Ty's eye. He's sprawled on my bed with his physics textbook, and the look he gives me is pure *here we go again*. I shoot him a desperate *help me* expression, but he just shrugs with this awkward, apologetic smile that basically screams *you're on your own, Winters*.Traitor."Ruby," I say softly, rubbing circles on her back like I always do. "It'

Summer's PovI ran.I just turn and ran out of the dining room, down the narrow hallway, into my bedroom, my tiny, cramped bedroom with the cracked ceiling and the window that doesn’t close all the way. I slam the door and lock it, pressing my back against the wood like that will somehow keep the world out.Crew’s father. Of all the men in this city, my mother is marrying Crew’s father.I slide down to the floor, pulling my knees to my chest, and the sobs come hard and fast. My whole body shakes with them. This morning I thought things couldn’t get worse than being humiliated in front of the entire school. I was wrong. So catastrophically wrong.“Summer.” Mom’s voice comes through the door, sharp with disapproval. “Open this door right now.”“No.”“Summer Elizabeth Winters, you open this door or so help me—”I unlock it because I don’t have the energy to fight. She pushes inside, and I can see the anger in her face. The disappointment.“That was disrespectful,” she says. “That was inc

Summer's PovMy heart is trying to punch its way out of my chest as I walk away from Crew's car.Why did I say no? What was I thinking? I just refused Crew Ashford, the boy who's made my life hell for six months, who has the power to destroy what little stability my mom and I have left.I keep my head down and walk faster, trying to disappear into the morning crowd of students. If I can just get inside, find Ruby, hide in first period….A hand grabs my arm and yanks me backward.I stumble, my backpack sliding off one shoulder, and when I spin around, Crew is right there. His jaw is tight, his blue eyes burning with barely controlled fury."What do you mean by no?" His voice is low, dangerous. "We don't have a choice in this, Summer. You're going to do as I say, or else I'll make your life miserable."Something inside me snaps."What else do you want to do to me?" The words come out louder than I intended, and a few people nearby turn to look. "You've already done everything you could

Summer's PovThe mansion is quiet when I get back.No staff bustling around, no sounds of conversation, nothing. Just silence that echoes off the high ceilings and makes me feel small in all this space.I head straight to my room and close the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment like I can physically block out everything that happened today. Crew's hands on my shoulders. His threat about the tutoring. That word—sis—dripping with mockery in front of Ty.I need to stop thinking about it.The shower helps. I stay under the hot water until my skin turns pink and the tension in my shoulders starts to loosen. When I finally emerge, wrapped in one of the impossibly soft towels from the bathroom, I feel almost human again.I pull on comfortable clothes, leggings and an oversized sweater—and collapse onto my bed with the novel I've been reading. It's a fantasy about a girl who discovers she has magic powers and runs away

Summer's PovI woke up to morning light streaming through the massive windows, my body stretching automatically before my brain fully caught up.School. I had to go to school today.I was reaching for my phone to check the time when I saw a figure standing beside my bed.I screamed. My vision cleared and the figure resolved into Crew Ashford, standing there in his school uniform, watching me sleep like some kind of psychopath."What the hell?" I scrambled backward in bed, pulling the covers up like they'd somehow protect me. "What are you doing in my room?"He stepped closer, and there was this smile on his face which was mischievous and unsettling."Hi, sis.""Back off." My heart was racing so fast I felt dizzy. "What are you doing here? How did you even get in?""Oh, did I creep you out?" He said it like he was teasing, voice lilting in this weird playful way that made my skin crawl. "I was just checking on you.""You need to leave right now." I pointed at the door. "I want to take
