“She’s dead.” Francis gasps out. I’m staring at his thigh muscle as it twitches and spams; I’m soaked in his blood, and I can see nothing but the next cut I want to make. He hasn’t lasted long, but I’ve managed to cause him some serious pain, my mate and father ensured he will never walk again, but I made him feel every ounce of pain he inflicted on every Academy girl. The bloodthirsty part of me wants to keep going, but the shifter and new-mother part of me just wants this all to be over so we can go home. I drop the hunting knife onto the ground and stagger back so I can look at my father. I know it's true now. Only someone who shares my blood could be this angry and this guarded at the same time. I think I knew it was true right from the start, but my time at the Academy has made me want to see the darkness instead of the light. When I first met Gideon, he promised to show me a way to live without killing; he did, and while doing so, he showed me how to see the light and kindness s

I watch from beside the van as Gideon and Rusty shake hands, and Low is even bowing low towards one of the white wolves, while Ghost seems to be silently saying goodbye to the other wolf. It all seems very final but surely my father is coming to the Dark Moon Pack. I know I just disappointed him by naming my son after a man he doesn’t know but he’s just going to have to understand that Desmond feels more like a father to me. “You’re leaving?” I ask my father as I push off the van. Now he has a full stomach so for the first time in hours, both of my arms are free and I actually feel kind of strange without him attached to me. “I have to, little one.” Rusty mutters as he slaps Gideon’s back and pulls away so he can face me. “A Pack can’t have two Alphas and I am nowhere near ready to step down. Gideon is going to have his hands full with you and the little pup; the last thing he needs is for his wolf feeling threatened.” Gideon

We pass the two grieving families as we walk to the edge of the Pack. It took a while for either family to look at us but when Rusty showed up for the first time, he helped them move on by offering them a new home. It will be hard losing Pack members but Gideon and I both agreed that they needed a fresh start away from the pain. I have no idea how it feels to lose a pup so permanently but I do understand it after what Seraphina did to me. “Are you ready for tonight?” Gideon asks me as he puts one arm around me; Des is still pulling on his hair but he seems completely unbothered. “More than ready, once she’s dead, we can finally move on.” I rest my head on his arm. We’ve kept Seraphine locked in the basement since we got back to the Pack but tonight she’s finally going to be held accountable for her crimes. I’ve spent six months making her slowly bleed for what she’s done to me; I’ve taken my pound of flesh and now it's time for the Pack to have theirs. We silently decided to wait fo
