“Target eliminated. No witnesses. Leaving the area.” I speak into the little mic and the computer types out the message while I break down my gun. The man I just killed was the head of a major crime family; I need to get out of this area before his men realise where the shot came from. By the time my gun is secure in its hard casing, I see a little green tick on my computer screen which tells me my payment has been transferred and the job has been marked as done. With a small smile I slam the computer closed, swing my bag over my shoulder and start for the stairs of the abandoned building. I glance left and right to make sure I’m not being watched before pushing into the room. I’m not sure what I expected but even for a rest stop, this place is bare. A double bed with a ratty sheet, a mirror over a sink, a cracked toilet with no seat to protect me from the cold and a showerhead that's dripping despite being turned off. I dream of nothing so when my computer starts to beep, I’m pulled from sleep and feeling refreshed. I scramble from the bare bed so quickly that my knife clatters to the floor. I need to answer my computer before it disconnects or I’ll be in a world of pain. I ignore my t-shirt; I know who is calling and he’s seen me in worse states of dress than this. I manage to find my computer at the bottom of my bag; I flip it open and press the answer button just as the call starts to disconnect.
