The night train moved steadily through the countryside, its wheels clicking a constant, hypnotic rhythm against the rails. It was well past midnight, and the carriage Sophia occupied was almost empty. Only five or six other passengers remained, scattered across the seats like forgotten belongings. Most had their heads tilted back, eyes closed, or wore headphones that blocked out the world. The overhead lights had been dimmed to a soft amber glow, creating long pools of shadow between the rows. Sophia sat alone near the back, in a window seat on the right side of the aisle. She had kicked off her heels hours ago and now rested her stockinged feet on the floor, legs crossed at the knees.
