AaronNight falls, leaving the sleepy town of Northwood finally quiet.Looking up into the dark sky above, the stars twinkle slightly, holding my attention until a silent presence comes up from behind me. Normally, I'd chastise him for it, a rude behavior that he's never grown out of from his days as a pup.But I'm in a good mood today."Has she settled?" I ask, crossing my arms over my chest."For the most part." Wren lowers himself down onto the grass at my feet, rolling his large body back until he's supported on his hands. "Rose said she's pretty quiet.""Mm, I imagine so."Northwood's lights flicker through the thick forest surrounding the motel's property. As the halfway point between Redwood and Soleus, this town gives my pack the chance to recover before our journey home. We've all had a long few days."She's pretty skittish," Wren continues. "Which...I guess is quite typical of breeders."I stay silent, waiting for him to make his point. Wren rarely indulges in idle conversat

Gabriela"So," Rose says while toweling off her wet hair and hopping back onto her bed. "How long have you known you were going to be a breeder?"My body stiffens at the question, mostly because I have no idea what to say for a lie. I'm not all that familiar with breeders and the culture surrounding them, only having heard about them in passing or through old legends told to us as pups when we were still young. On the other hand, she could also be testing me—seeing if I'm actually who I say I am and not just some fraud sent by my pack in order to learn trade secrets or whatever else spies do."Oh, um." I clear my throat. "Since I was young.""Really?" Her long dark hair is tossed over her shoulder as she straightens up, her towel tossed carelessly across the back of the single desk chair. "So...what, your parents just came up to you one day and told you that you were going to be a breeder?"I stare at her, not sure what to say to that.Is that how it worked? Or would it be more approp

GabrielaTrue to Rose's word, Wren does show up bright and early in the morning. She grumbles as she rolls out of bed, pushing past him with a shove of her shoulder that barely even moves him. His eyes fixate on me as he hovers in the doorway, causing me to sit up and rub at my eyes.I'm just about to throw back the covers, figuring that he wants me to join them, when he says, "Food will be brought to you shortly. Do you need anything?"I open my mouth, about to tell him no, when a wave of nausea hits me. I haven't eaten in days and at the mere mention of it, my morning sickness has decided to rear its ugly head.Shoving my sheets back, I try to move as slowly as possible as I rise to my feet. The room around me spins while black spots cloud my vision. I've been running on pure adrenaline these past few weeks and without any food in me, it seems my body's finally decided to call it quits.I sway on my feet as I try to head for the bathroom. Suddenly, the room around me goes blurry."S

Gabriela"Your Grace..." Eris's voice is even as she addresses him. "She could've been sleeping."His eyes flit from me and to his elder. "And you were supposed to tell me the moment she woke up.""Weren't you out getting her things to eat?" Eris quips.Slowly, Aaron lifts the full plastic bag in his hand up in the air, a carefully blank look on his face."Excellent, Your Grace. She is rather thirsty as well. I did send Rose to retrieve her water."In his other hand, he lifts up a single bottle. "Yes, I did happen to run into her."Eris nods and steps back from the bed, giving him room as he walks over to my left side slowly. His eyes are fixed on me with an unreadable expression, even as he sets the bag down at the foot of my bed and opens it to produce a bunch of various convenience store snacks."Did...you go shopping for those?" I say, surprised.I'm not so much surprised that he dealt with humans in order to get me food, but more that he went himself instead of sending someone el

Elijah"The reports indicate that the Southern King's journey has taken him west, a hundred miles from here." Constance smooths her hand over the maps, pressing the creases out of it as we all gather around the large table. Her hands flick quickly with a red marker as she draws out the trail. "We have reports of him staying in a human town called Northwood for several days."When she circles a part of the map and annotates it as "Northwood," I frown, puzzled."What business would he have in a human town that's a thousand miles away from his packlands?" My finger traces a line down from my mouth to my jaw as confusion shifts through me.Honestly, what would any alpha king need in a human town way up here that he couldn't get anywhere else? It makes no sense to travel such a far distance when he could be sending a pack of enforcers to do the job for him.For another king to be showing up in the North like this—my North—spells trouble.Aaron Hampton has always been known to be a dangerou

ElijahThe elders call upon me sooner than I'm prepared for.Their dark chambers are cool as I step inside them. The low lighting causes my night vision to slowly adjust before I make my way down the passageway, coming out on the other side where it opens up into a grand chamber.Five of my elders sit uniformly in a line, all of them waiting for me to arrive.Back a few decades ago, this position within the pack was not only respected but revered. To be an elder meant that you were above even the king who ruled you at some points. As the eldest and wisest of the authorities, their rulings typically took precedent. However, that was decades ago, and times have changed. No longer as alpha kings do we fear our neighbors or the humans that have slowly begun to surround us. We, as our own nations, have come together in times of need and relied on each other for guidance and not turned to those among us in our pack with higher social status.I was raised on a healthy skepticism of the world

GabrielaThe beauty of the Southern packlands is somewhat staggering when we arrive.I'd expected it to be dry and arid compared to the cool humidity I left back home, but the expanses of dry brush and large jagged mountains in the distance surprise me. Staring at them when we reach the peak of our climb before heading down into the valley, I shift and stand in awe of what's to be my new home. From here, small speckles of yellow wildflowers peek through the long grass down below, swaying gently in the wind. The earthy scent of dirt, not as dense as back home, fills my nose. I breathe it in deeply as I try to memorize the smell.Behind me, someone shifts and stands at the edge of the overhang by my right. I glance over, surprised to see Rose smiling peacefully at the view ahead."Pretty magnificent, isn't it?"I nod. I'm going to have to get used to not having the cover of tall and dense forests to move through when out for a run. Though, who's to say I'll even be able to leave the est

Gabriela"Your Grace." The enforcers ahead of us step to the side and bow once we reach the mansion. "Will you be needing anything else?""That is all for now," he tells them, nodding to them in unison. "Get some rest. It was a long journey. Elder Eris, you as well."They all break apart rather quickly, heading back toward the middle of town while Wren and Rose stay behind with us. Aaron's hand falls away from me while he moves, giving me room to not only breathe but to relax a little bit."I should probably get you some clothes," Rose says while looking at me. "You're around my size, so I'll bring a bag over.""Perhaps a suitcase," Aaron suggests. She makes a face. "Are you going to be paying to replace the rest of my wardrobe?"My mouth drops open. Is she actually allowed to talk to him like that?Never in my life have I ever met a female this bold before—especially when talking to a damn alpha king. I can't even imagine the kind of reprimanding she'd get if she were to ever open he

ElijahThe day Constance and Camden head out for their journey, a sudden feeling of dread settles in the pit of my stomach.I'm not one to believe in superstition, nor am I the kind of alpha who needs complete control over a situation such as sending my two closest confidants away on a reconnaissance mission. I trust them, more than I trust most in this pack.Yet, the moment they disappear into the dark thicket of the forest surrounding our town, I'm left with that sinking feeling that refuses to go away no matter how much work I drown myself in.I want to believe that this is a symptom of them being away from me so soon after the Gabriela incident. Not even Camden knows what exactly happened, just that I met a female during the ball, had a brief affair, and then found out she'd been trying to baby-trap me.Only Gabriela and I know of our fated connection and truthfully, I'd like to keep it that way, even if the thought of never seeing her again still haunts me.But what am I to do wi

GabrielaMy mouth drops to the floor when the door to my new room opens. It's so much bigger than I thought it would be, and so much nicer too. Are we in the right place? We can't be.Aaron steps inside, letting the door slowly drift open behind him. "There is a full bathroom along with a tub if you wish to soak. Everything has been stocked, so you will find the basics in the linen closet just behind the door. I will admit, I wasn't anticipating you coming so...lightly packed. So, forgive the bare essentials for the time being."I slowly creep inside, barely registering anything that he's saying. All I can focus on is the fact that this room looks like it's fit for a king. Or queen, I guess.Scanning around the room, I don't see any personal artifacts lying around, so this can't be his room. There is a connecting door on the wall with a lock on the inside, farthest from where we are, and if I had to guess, I'd say his room is on the other side of it.Why the hell is he letting me stay
