The coffee was on my desk when I got in. I hadn’t asked for it. Hadn’t mentioned how I took it to anyone. It was just there. The right temperature. The right colour. A small thing placed by someone who had paid attention before I had even walked through the door. I looked at it for a second. Then I sat down and got to work. The morning was full. Emails accumulated over the weekend like water finding the lowest point. A board call at nine that ran twenty minutes over because Peterson never knew when he had made his point and kept making it anyway. A contract review that should have taken an hour and took ninety minutes because the other side had changed three clauses without flagging them and I had to find all three myself. I found all three. At eleven-fifteen my door opened. “The Hartley documents.” Olivia set a folder on the edge of my desk. “You mentioned needing them before the two o’clock.” I hadn’t mentioned it to her. “I heard you ask Janet on Friday,” she said. “Janet h

He said nothing about it the next day. Or the day after. By Thursday I had almost convinced myself it was over. Filed and closed. A question asked, an answer given, a man with too many next things to sit with any one of them for long. I was good at convincing myself of things that were convenient. Thursday morning he arrived at eight exactly. Coffee already on his desk because I had recalibrated after Monday and arrived at seven-thirty every day since. He said good morning the way he always said it. Looked at the schedule I had printed and left on the right side of his desk. Went into his office and closed the door. Normal. Entirely normal. At ten he had a call with the Singapore office that ran long. I could hear his voice through the door, measured and precise, the particular register he used when he was managing someone at a distance who needed managing. He was good at it. He had a way of making a correction sound like a question and a question sound like a decision and a deci

He didn’t knock. Marcus never knocked when something was wrong. He knocked for meetings and pleasantries and the ordinary business of a workday. When something was actually wrong he just came in and closed the door behind him and that was how you knew before he said a single word. Damian looked up from the Reinholt file. Marcus set a single printed page on the desk. Sat down in the chair across from him without being invited. Put both hands flat on his knees and looked at Damian the way he had been looking at him since they were twenty-two years old and something needed to be said that neither of them was going to enjoy. “Read it,” he said. Damian read it. It was a transaction summary. One page. A transfer of four hundred and twelve thousand from a Graves Industries operational account to an external holding company registered eight weeks ago. The holding company name meant nothing. The account number meant nothing. The authorisation signature at the bottom was his own. He read

Marcus sent it at nine forty-seven. No message with it. Just the file. Which was the right thing to do. Damian did not need context or explanation or anything that would sit between him and the document. He just needed the document. He opened it. The access log ran to fourteen pages. Every person who had touched the compromised account in the last two months. Every entry time. Every exit time. Every delegation granted and by whom and to whom and on what date. He started at the beginning and read all the way through without stopping. Two names he recognised immediately. Finance. Senior level. Both with legitimate reason to be in that account. He set them aside mentally and kept reading. The third name he did not recognise. He read it twice. Then a third time. The name meant nothing. No face. No context. No meeting or email or corridor conversation that connected to it. He went back through the log to find every instance of that name. Seven entries. Spread across six weeks. He l

He searched it in the morning. Not from his office laptop. From his personal device, sitting in his car in the basement car park before he went up. A small distinction that mattered. Whatever he found on the personal device stayed there. Nothing on the company network. Nothing that could be seen from inside the building before he understood what he was looking at. The name connected to a holding company. He already knew that. Marcus had said so. What he found when he went deeper was that the holding company connected to a second registration. A shell within a shell. Same structure. Same pattern of blank directorship and recent registration and no public facing presence. The kind of architecture you build when you need something to exist on paper without existing anywhere a person could actually find it. He kept going. The second shell connected to a financial services firm. Small. Boutique. A website that listed services without listing people. He searched the firm name separately
