The underground bunker remains quiet while I slowly open my eyes to the dim overhead lighting, and I realize the terrible fever has finally left my body. The heavy steel doors are shut tight to block out all the noise from the estate above us, so the room feels very isolated and calm. I take a deep breath of the cool air, and my lungs expand wide without any of the sharp pain that choked me earlier.The life-threatening chemical withdrawal is over, but a deep and heavy exhaustion settles into my bones to replace the physical agony. My muscles lack the energy to lift my head off the soft pillows, and my limbs feel weighted down against the thick mattress.
