RonanDorian drove. This, I had learned, was simply how it went with Dorian Caelstorm. He organised the thing and then he navigated the thing and the result was that you arrived where you were going without ever needing to formally discuss who was in charge of getting there. Cassian took the front seat without discussion. Which left Lyra and me in the back with the morning outside turning slowly from pale to gold and the academy disappearing in the mirror. She sat with her shoulder against the door and her face turned toward the passing fields. She had Sable's phone out within the first five minutes and she read the message thread in the focused way she did everything, absorbing it without performing her reaction to it. I watched the reflection of her in the window glass. The line of her jaw. The slow precise way she blinked when something on the screen landed with weight.Cassian glanced in the rear mirror twice in the first hour. Both times he looked away before I could determine w

LyraHer name was Councillor Hessa Farrow. She told us this the way she told us everything in the first ten minutes. Directly. Without preamble. With the economy of a person who had spent most of her professional life conserving time and had no intention of spending it differently now. She sat across the low table from me with her hands folded on the surface and a cup of tea she did not drink and eyes that held a very specific kind of steadiness. Not calm, not exactly. Steadiness. The kind that comes from having been through enough difficult things that you have stopped being surprised by difficulty and started simply moving through it."I knew your mother," she said.I had been preparing, across the whole four-hour drive, for many things this room might contain. I had built scenarios. I had thought through what Kieran might have to say and what the reform division would need and what the combination of both might require of me. I had not been preparing for that sentence."Not casuall

LyraI read it three times. Not because the words were difficult. The document was formal and clear, the kind of language that pack councils use when they want precision over everything else. Assessment date. Wolf name. Territory of origin. A grid of scored categories, each one filled in with numbers that had a specific weight even to someone who had never seen a formal training assessment before. My mother's name at the top. Her territory of origin. Her age at assessment, twenty-one, which meant she had been younger than I was now when someone had sat across a table from her and watched her train and written these numbers down. The numbers were extraordinary.I had not expected that. I had expected them to be good, because Hessa Farrow had told me they were extraordinary and Hessa was not a woman who used words loosely. But reading them on the page was different from hearing them described. The assessor had scored fifteen categories. My mother had the highest possible mark in eleven

POV: LyraThere were not enough rooms. This was established practically and without drama approximately twenty minutes after dinner, when Dorian looked at the layout of the safe house with the expression of someone performing arithmetic and arriving at an answer that was awkward but not insurmountable. Kieran said immediately that he and Dorian would share the larger room at the front, with the ease of someone who had been living in small spaces for months and had stopped caring about logistics. Cassian said without being asked that the couch was fine, and said it in the specific tone of a person who has made a decision in advance and is announcing the result rather than offering it for discussion.Which left the small back room.Ronan and I were given it by the combined unspoken agreement of everyone else in the house, the way things were sometimes decided in groups of people who know each other well enough to arrange things without requiring explicit conversation. There were two nar

LyraWe drove back to the academy the next morning. The drive felt different from the drive to the safe house. Not lighter, not heavier. More settled. Like something that had been held at arm's length had been brought closer and the bringing closer, while difficult, had made the carrying more manageable. Kieran stayed behind with Hessa Farrow to begin the formal process of preparing his testimony. He hugged me at the door of the safe house and held on for a moment longer than he usually would have, and I let him, and neither of us said anything because sometimes the saying is less than the holding.Cassian told me about his father's message on the road. He said it plainly, in the front seat, turned slightly to the side so he could address both me and Ronan at once. Aldous Valehart had received formal pressure from the Nightbane family to withdraw the counter-complaint. The pressure was described as significant. His father wanted Cassian home immediately.I listened without interrupti
