I sat on the edge of the bed with my arms wrapped around my knees, the silk sheets cool against my skin. Dominic stood in front of me, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, eyes locked on mine like he could see straight through every wall I tried to build. My heart pounded so hard it echoed in my ears. After the silence between us stretched too long, he had pulled me here and refused to let me hide anymore. “Talk,” he said, voice low and firm. He didn’t raise it. He didn’t need to. The command wrapped around me and made my throat tight. “Tell me everything you’re feeling right now. No hiding. No short answers.” I looked down at my hands. My fingers twisted together until the knuckles turned white. The doubt from overhearing his call still sat heavy in my chest, sharp and cold. I had tried to push it away all evening, but it kept rising like bile. “I feel... lost,” I whispered.
