Chapter 19UNEXPECTED VISITThe next morning, Maria came downstairs to find May at the stove, the rich aroma of cinnamon and vanilla filling the kitchen. A bowl of oatmeal was already on the table, topped with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey."Morning, sweetheart," May said without turning around. "Sleep well?"Maria stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her. The way her hands moved with practiced ease. The way her shoulders were set just a little too straight.She's holding it together for me, Maria realized."Yeah," Maria said softly. "I slept okay."She walked to the table and sat down.
