POV: Avalon PierceThe emails started Saturday morning. Individual messages from people who had been at the symposium, arriving throughout the weekend, with correspondence from those who had thought about what they wanted to say before saying it.Susan Park wrote about infrastructure. Three precise paragraphs, outlining what the foundation could do to address what her organisation needed rather than what funders typically offered.David Torres wrote one sentence.Dignity is the right framework to build around.A man named Kevin Walsh who ran a youth housing program and had been at the table five wrote four pages. It was an analysis of what he had observed in six years of working in the gap. What worked and what looked like it worked. Selene read every email twice.Avalon watched her do it at the kitchen table on Saturday morning, coffee getting cold, reading with the focused stillness of someone receiving something important.“Kevin Walsh’s four pages,” she said without looking up.

POV: Selene CastellanoShe told him on a Wednesday. They were washing up after dinner. He was drying while she was washing. The domestic division they’d arrived at without discussing it, the way most true things between them had arrived.“I want to tell you something,” she said.“Okay.”She kept her hands in the water.“I’ve been keeping a journal since the symposium. It is mostly about the foundation, what I’m learning and still figuring out.” She said. “I didn’t know that.”“I know. I haven’t mentioned it.” She handed him a glass. “I wrote about you last week.”He dried the glass without speaking.“I wrote that I think you’ve almost stopped, that you’ve been doing something differently since the letter. She looked at the water and continued. “The way you laugh, you reaching out to Catherinesnd the book you put in my bag.” She said.He was quiet.“I’ve been watching it,” she said. “Filing it the way I file things I don’t want to lose.”“What made you decide to say it out loud?” he

POV: Avalon PierceHe finished the notes on Thursday night. He didn't race through them, he'd been reading one section at a time for months, letting each part settle before moving to the next. But the last section was different. He’d started it without meaning to finish it, picked it up right after dinner while Selene was still at the foundation and told himself twenty minutes but ended up reading for three hours. The final section covered the last two years of Nene’s life. Her handwriting was the most deliberate here. Every word placed the quality of someone who had started to understand their time and had decided not to waste any of it.She wrote about the company less and more about what she’d learned.Small observations. The kind that accumulated into wisdom so gradually you didn’t notice until you looked back and saw how far you’d come. The thing about building is that you never see the finished thing. You only ever see the building. I used to think that was the tragedy of it. No

POV: Selene CastellanoThe call came on a Monday morning.Maria Chap.Selene answered expecting a routine update on the infrastructure fund implementation. Maria had been the foundation’s most engaged community partner. Reliable and Precise. She is the kind of person who sends follow-up emails before you finish reading the first one.Her voice was different.“I need to tell you something,” Maria said. “Before it gets back to you another way.”“Tell me,” she said.“One of my colleagues. Someone I brought to the symposium.” Maria paused. “She’s been talking to other organisations in our network. Saying the foundation made promises in the planning sessions that aren’t reflected in the formal agreements.”“What promises specifically?”“That the infrastructure fund would cover operational staffing costs. Not just systems and equipment.” Another pause. “Selene, we never promised that. I was in every conversation and it was never said.”“But she believes it was.”“She believes it strongly en

POV: Selene CastellanoShe found the envelope on the kitchen counter at seven AM.Avalon had already left for Nexus. His coffee cup was in the sink, his jacket was gone and the apartment was quiet. The envelope had her name on it.She opened it and inside was a single photograph. The one from the hallway. His father laughing outside the building nobody could place but this was a copy and on the back in Avalon’s handwriting three words. He’d have approved. She stood in the kitchen holding it.Then she turned it over and looked at Jonathan Pierce laughing. She put that in her bag and went to work. The foundation office at eight was just her and the whiteboard and the morning. She made coffee, sat at her desk, opened her laptop and started work There was an email from Kevin Walsh, sent at 11 PM the night before.Ms. Pierce, I spoke with two of the other organizations today. Both of them said the same thing about yesterday’s calls. That it felt different. I don’t know yet if different is
