All Chapters of EYES OPEN: Chapter 101 - Chapter 110

Declan Ward has not changed.Same rumpled confidence, same way of entering a space like he already assessed it from the doorway and found it adequately impressive. No laptop, no folder. Whatever he brought, he thinks he can deliver without props.Owen Garrick beside him is all calculated handshakes and silver temples and eyes that price everything they land on.Priya, Saoirse and I sit with the east light behind us.Not accidental."Signal Strategy has done in two weeks what most firms take two years to build which is why we want to be involved," Garrick opens, leaning forward, voice smooth as something rehearsed until it sounds spontaneous. "We want to be part of what comes next.""Involved how?" Priya asks evenly. He talks about capital structure and inflection points and acceleration factors and his voice has the particular warmth of money being discussed in polite language and I let him finish before I say anything because letting people finish is how you find out what they actual

The ironwork is extraordinary.I stand in the musicians gallery of the building, the east wall, upper level, and look at the balustrade the third generation craftsman's hands rebuilt from moulds that have been waiting seventy years to be used again and I feel something move through me that has nothing to do with architecture and everything to do with what it means when something that was lost comes back.Rhys is beside me.His hand finds the ironwork and runs along the pattern slowly, feeling it the way he feels everything in this building, with the specific reverence of someone who understands what it cost to get here."It is exactly right," he says softly."It is," I agree.Felix is in the main hall below us.He walked the gallery first, slowly, one hand trailing the ironwork the same way Rhys's did, and then he went down to the hall and stood in his spot, the one against the wall where he said the sound would travel the full length of the space, and he has been there for ten minute

He picks up on the fourth ring.Which means he saw it was Priya calling and took three rings to decide whether to answer, which is already a confession of something before a single word is spoken.I am standing in our kitchen. Rhys is leaning against the counter behind me, arms folded, jaw set, listening to my half of the call with the focused quiet of a man who has already decided something and is waiting for the information to catch up."James," Priya says on speaker. Her voice is the specific controlled calm of someone sitting on top of something enormous. "Tell me about Amanda and Signal Strategy."Silence.Four seconds of it.Each one worse than the last."Priya," he starts."Do not," she cuts in. Not loud. Not angry yet. Just absolute. "Do not start with my name and a pause. Tell me what she is doing at my office with paperwork that has her name on it."A breath on his end. Then, "It was before. Before you and I were anything real. Before Signal Strategy was even a name." His vo

The concierge is a man named Graham who has the specific professional warmth of someone who has seen everything pass through a building's lobby and judges none of it.He hands it over with a smile and goes back to his desk and I stand in the lobby in my coat with the package in my hands and Rhys beside me looking at it with an expression that is carefully, deliberately neutral. It is not small.A box. Properly wrapped, not the hasty tape-and-hope wrapping of a man who grabbed something last minute. Deliberate. Considered. Dark green paper with a card tucked under the ribbon.I open the card first.Derek's handwriting."I saw this and thought of you. Not as a gesture. Not as a move. Just because it is yours and you should have it. D."I turn the card over.Nothing on the back.Rhys reads it without touching it.His jaw does not tighten. His eyes do not narrow. He just reads it and stands there and says nothing and somehow his saying nothing is louder than anything he could say.I unwra

Rhys is quiet for longer than usual when I tell him.We are in bed, late, the city doing its midnight thing outside and Arlo a warm weight at the end and the lamp on low, and I told him about Derek's message the way I tell him everything now, directly and completely, and he has been quiet for forty five seconds which I am counting without meaning to."Just Evan," he says finally."That is what he said," I reply. "No Derek present," he says."He said he would drop him with Sophie beforehand," I reply. "I would collect him from Sophie's. One hour at a park or wherever Evan wants. Then back."Rhys looks at the ceiling."He is very good," he says quietly. Not bitter. Almost admiring in the specific way of someone who recognises a well executed move even when it is aimed at them."Yes." "Because if you say no, you are saying no to a three year old's excitement," he says. "And if you say yes, you are spending an hour alone with Derek's son which is a level of involvement that means someth
