CHAPTER 31: WHERE IS LILY?

CLARA'S POVI wrapped my arms around her small frame and held on; I felt the tension gradually drain from her shoulders. She sniffled once more, then went quiet, her breathing settling calmly against my chest."Can we go to your room?" I asked. She shook her head so hard I knew it was a no."Okay, Lily, we'll stay right here. You can sleep in my room tonight."She nodded in agreement, which told me more than anything she'd said all evening that this is what she wanted. I eased her back onto the pillow and reached over to flick off the lamp. I was halfway to the door to check the lock when I noticed her small hands wrapped around something; It was my sketchbook. She must have pulled it off my desk while I wasn't looking, tucked it against her like a stuffed animal. I crossed the room quickly and reached for it, my fingers curling around the cover before I could stop myself. It was instinct, pure reflex, the same reflex that made me hide it from Maya for months.Lily's face crumpled ins

CHAPTER 32: FOLLOW PROTOCOL

JAXSON'S POVThe door swung open so hard it cracked against the wall. I stood in the doorway, my mouth wide open, trying to make sense of what I was looking at. Lily was curled up on Clara's bed, tucked under her arm, her small face pressed into that same disgusting oversized shirt Clara always slept in. She was fast asleep, not missing, not hurt. For one second, I felt relieved that she was okay. Then something else took over, something uglier, something I couldn't explain even to myself."WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?" I roared.Clara jolted awake immediately, her eyes flying open with panic. Lily stirred against her but didn't wake, just made a small sound and burrowed deeper into her side."HOW DARE YOU, CLARA? You wrapped your fat, disgusting self around my sister?" I spat, stepping into the room. "Do you have any idea what you just put this house through? We've been tearing this place apart looking for her!""She came to me," Clara said, sitting up fast, her voice cracking with the ef

CHAPTER 33: SIT IN A CORNER

CLARA'S POV I stood frozen in shock, staring at her blank face. "Lily," I said gently, crouching down. "Remember last night? You came to my room, crying, not wanting to be alone. Do you remember?" Lily blinked at me, chewing slowly on her toast, her eyes drifting off toward the window like she was searching for the memory somewhere. "Please, remember." "Oh," she said finally. "Yeah, I felt lonely. There was nobody there, and Maria was asleep, and I didn't want to sleep by myself, so I went to Clara's room." "Why didn't you come to me?" Maria asked. Lily shrugged. "You always tell me to go back to sleep and shut the light. Clara tells me stories." "See?" I turned to Maria, relief flooding through me. "She just told you herself, in her own words. She came to me, I didn't take her from her room, I didn't do anything wrong here." Maria didn't budge. "That changes nothing," she said flatly. "You have no rights over this child, Clara. Whether she came to you or not, you should have b

CHAPTER 34: AGAIN!!

CLARA'S POVMaya took the box out of James's hand and held it up right in Sloane's face. "See this?" she said. "This right here says we're invited. Both of us. So you can save the whole speech about belonging, Sloane, because apparently James and Charles disagree with you."Sloane looked pissed and disappointed at the same time, her eyes moving from the box to Charles like she expected him to have done better. "This is ridiculous, Charles, you both know that, right? It's ridiculous."Charles shrugged. "Not really my call to make, Sloane. I already told her she's in. James already told her she's in. That's two votes against your one, and last I checked, you don't own the guest list; it's not even your party.""I have every right to have an opinion about who shows up at any party in this school, especially when it's amongst us, the elites.""An opinion, sure," Charles said. "A veto, no."Sloane's face turned red. "You're all embarrassing yourselves," she snapped, looking around at Charle

CHAPTER 35: FOR THE FIRST TIME

CLARA'S POV"Lily, dear, what's wrong?" I asked, crouching down in the doorway so I was level with her. "It's late; you should be asleep."She looked up at me with those same wide eyes from the night before, her small hands twisting the hem of her nightgown. "I want to sleep here," she said quietly. My heart stopped. I could still feel the sting from that morning, Jaxson's voice tearing me awake, Maria's face carved out of stone, the two of them standing over me like I'd committed some unforgivable crime. I wasn't doing that again. I couldn't."Lily, I can't," I said gently. "You remember what happened this morning, right? Your brother was really upset; I got in trouble. I can't have you sleeping in my room again, not without someone knowing exactly where you are."Her face crumpled a little, but she didn't cry, just nodded slowly like she understood even if she didn't like it."Come on," I said, taking her small hand in mine. "Let's find Maria, okay? She can decide what to do."We wa

CHAPTER 36: GET IN

JAXSON'S POV"JAX." Clara's voice cut through my thoughts. "Please excuse me, I need to get to my room."I moved out of the way, still stunned by what I had just seen, or maybe just noticed for the first time. But why hadn't I noticed this before? I'd shared a house with her and seen her dress like this for about a week now, and somehow I never saw it; I never saw her as capable of sexiness.I watched her walk past me down the hall, her hips swaying slightly under the loose fabric of her nightdress. I had to physically shake myself back into my own body. "Get it together, Jax," I muttered under my breath, dragging a hand down my face. But then, right there in the hallway, I felt myself harden, Big Jax thickened and stretched, my shorts shot out in front, and I knew right then that I was in deep sh*t.CLARA'S POV"Well, that was awkward," I muttered to myself as I opened my bedroom door and leaned my back against it for a second. Why did he stare at me like that, I thought, replaying t

CHAPTER 37: NEVER AGAIN

CLARA'S POVI tripped and lost my balance when I heard him. I stood on the pavement for a second, staring at the open window. My mind raced at light speed, and I thought of every possible reason he was doing this — more homework, or maybe he wanted to warn me again about something."I said get in," he repeated.I hesitated a moment longer, then pulled the door open and slid into the passenger seat, setting my bag carefully on the floorboard, making sure nothing touched the leather. He pulled back onto the road without another word, and for a long stretch neither of us spoke, the silence sitting heavy between us, thick enough that I could hear my own breathing over the hum of the engine."How's Lily doing?" he asked finally, eyes still fixed on the road ahead. The question caught me off guard. It was such a normal thing to ask, especially for people who live in the same house, but we never had conversations like these; we never talked about anything."She's doing well," I said carefull

CHAPTER 38: DEAD TO THE TOUCH

JAXSON'S POVThe fabric of Sloane's silk shirt shifted beneath my palm. I felt her hard nipples, yet my body remained completely dead to the touch. Her fingers dipped lower; she squished my balls and stroked me hard, trying to force a reaction off, Big Jax. I closed my eyes, focused entirely on the friction, and willed the blood to rush where it always did, but nothing stirred."What's wrong with you?" Sloane whispered. Her hand froze against my stomach, and she pulled back an inch to search my face. "You're distracted," she said. "What's going on with you, Jax? You've been weird all week.""It's nothing," I said, pulling back slightly. "Games have been rough. Charles has been on my back about everything, Coach is riding us hard for regionals, my parents are gone, and I've got Lily to deal with. It's a lot right now."She narrowed her eyes at me, not quite buying it, but she let it go for the moment, and tucked herself back against my chest instead. "You know you don't have to carr

CHAPTER 39: FATPHOBIC WORLD

CLARA'S POV"I don't know," I said quietly, dragging down the ends to make it longer, suddenly aware of every inch of myself. "It's a lot of skin, Maya. My whole body is out; I don't think I can pull this off.""You’re already pulling it off, girl; you look incredible. Look at your waist. All that ass hiding in a school uniform?" She teased."Maya, stop.""But I'm not lying; it's right there.""I don't feel good in it; let's check for something else.""Nope, we're not doing that. This is it, and you're wearing this.""It's my body, Maya, please. I wouldn't wear something that makes me feel uncomfortable.""Why? No, tell me, why and how does this make you feel uncomfortable? You look fabulous, Clara. You always do this, you always—""MAYA, PLEASE!" I screamed. "I don't need you to remind me what I do or how I feel," I said, pulling at the dress. "I don't feel comfortable with this, and I'm not wearing it. I don't expect you to know what it’s like being fat; you have a model body."\“I

CHAPTER 40: PUT HER ON THE PHONE

CLARA'S POV"I don't understand," I said, genuinely confused."What don’t you understand? What, you don't understand English? Want me to say it in French? Tu n'es pas autorisé à aller à la fête de James," he said sarcastically with a weird accent."But I was invited.""But you're staff here. You're obligated to be here; it's the weekend. Remember what your employee guide says, remember the rules, Clara.""Jaxson, it'll only take a few hours. I can ask Maria, I'll be back before—""YOU DON'T BELONG THERE!" he screamed. "What's the point? You don't belong there anyway. You stay here, do your job, and cancel every thought of going to that party." He pointed at me. "Don't test me, Clara. Don't. This isn’t theschool games; if you disobey me, I’d make your life miserable."He turned and walked away.I stood there, tears rolling down my cheeks. I searched for the words to fight back, to curse and scream at him the way he'd just done to me, but nothing came. He was right; I didn't belong ther
