CHAPTER 1

PrologueWhat do you do when you are a human in a wolf pack and your best friend is the next Alpha? You keep up. That's what. Or you try to keep up as much as a human body will let you.Neah and Caleb have been joined at the hip since the day they were born. Literally. Their mothers were best friends in college. The kind of best friends who did everything together, graduated together, and even went into labor on the same day in the same hospital. Neah came first by eleven minutes, a fact she never lets Caleb forget.Their moms built a studio together after college. Self defense classes and wellness programs for women, both human and werewolf. It was small at first, just a rented space above a laundromat, but it grew into something real. Something that mattered to both of them. Neah's mom ran the day to day operations while Diane stepped back after she met Marcus and became the Luna of the Iron Valley Pack.Being a Luna takes time. It takes everything, actually. But Diane never let go

CHAPTER 2

NEAHThe sound of screeching tires. Metal folding like paper. Glass exploding everywhere. My body flying forward but my hands grabbing nothing but air. Then impact. Hard and sudden and final.I jolted up in bed gasping for air. My chest was heaving and my shirt was soaked through with sweat. The room was dark. My room. I was in my room. I was safe. But I could still smell it. Burned rubber and gasoline and something metallic that I knew was blood but could never say out loud. The smell lived in my nose like it had moved in permanently. Three years and it hadn't faded one bit.My door flew open and Caleb was there before I could even catch my breath. He didn't say a word. He never did. He just climbed under my blanket, pulled me against his chest, and held me. His heartbeat was steady under my ear. His scent was familiar and warm, like pine and something sweet that I could never name. My breathing slowed. The smell of the crash faded. My eyes got heavy. This was our routine. Every nigh

CHAPTER 3

NEAHThe first week of senior year went exactly how I expected. Classes were fine. Training was good. The mean girls were mean. Same old routine. What I didn't expect was how much harder the nightmares would hit.Every night that week I woke up screaming. Every night Caleb came running. By Friday we were both exhausted and snapping at each other over stupid things like who left the milk out and whose turn it was to pick the music in the car."You need to talk to someone about this, Neah. It's getting worse and I don't know how to fix it." Caleb said it quietly while we were sparring after school. The others were rotating in and out, working on his stamina for the Alpha transition."I've talked to every doctor your mom has sent me to. Nothing works except you being there." I ducked under his arm and landed a jab to his ribs. A good one too. He grunted."Then maybe you shouldn't leave for college." He tried to sound casual but I heard what was underneath it. Fear."Don't start.""I'm se

CHAPTER 4

NEAH"What do you mean he's asking for me?"I was already pulling on my sneakers with one hand and holding the phone with the other. My heart was hammering so loud I was sure Theo could hear it through the line."Exactly what I said. He crossed the border bleeding and half conscious. Shane and Miles have him pinned down but he keeps saying your name. Over and over. Like it's the only word he knows.""That doesn't make any sense. I don't know anyone outside this pack.""I know. That's why I'm calling instead of handling it myself. Something about this feels wrong, Neah. Get here fast but be careful."He hung up before I could ask anything else. Classic Theo. Give you just enough information to terrify you and then disappear.I grabbed a jacket and headed for the back door. My brain was running through every possible explanation and none of them were good. I didn't know wolves from other packs. I had never left Iron Valley territory except to visit the studio in town. There was no reaso

CHAPTER 5

LIAMThe girl was staring at me like I had lost my mind. Maybe I had. The last seventy two hours were a blur of blood and running and a pull in my chest that wouldn't stop no matter how far I pushed my body.My wolf, Kain, had gone insane three days ago. Right in the middle of a council meeting with my ranked wolves. One second I was reviewing border reports and the next Kain was clawing at the inside of my skull, howling one word over and over.Mate. Mate. Mate.I told him to shut up. I had been telling him to shut up about mates for years. I watched my father lose his mind over my mother. Watched her twist him into a puppet until the pack nearly collapsed. I watched three other Alphas in our alliance fall apart because their mates were manipulative or weak or both. An Alpha with a mate was an Alpha with a leash. I wanted no part of it.But Kain didn't care what I wanted. He never did when it came to this. The pull started like a low hum in my chest. By the second day it was a rope w

CHAPTER 6

NEAHI couldn't sleep. Not that I expected to. There was a half dead Alpha in my clinic, wolves lurking outside our border, and Caleb still wasn't answering his phone.Theo made me go back to the packhouse after Liam finished his call. He said I needed rest. What he meant was he needed me somewhere secure while he figured out what was going on. I didn't argue. My body was running on fumes and my hands were still shaking from the adrenaline.I showered fast. The water turned pink as it washed Liam's blood off my skin. I stood there watching it swirl down the drain and tried to make sense of the last four hours.A stranger showed up at our border saying my name. He turned out to be one of the most powerful Alphas alive. His wolf called me his mate. And now there were wolves in our woods who were apparently there for me.Me. A human girl with no rank, no wolf, and no pack bond. What could anyone possibly want with me?I dried off and pulled on sweats and a tank top. Out of habit my hand

CHAPTER 7

NEAHGlass and wood exploded across the kitchen floor. Cold air rushed in and with it came a scent that made every hair on my body stand up. Wolf. Aggressive. Close.I grabbed my knife from where I had set it on the coffee table and moved in front of the couch without thinking. Liam tried to stand behind me and I heard him curse when his body refused to cooperate."Stay down," I told him."Like hell.""You can't even stand. Stay down and let me handle this."A figure stepped through the destroyed back door. Male. Tall. Lean but muscular. He was in human form but his eyes were glowing amber which meant his wolf was right at the surface ready to shift at any second. Behind him I could see a second shadow moving through the patio. Two of them. Just like Liam said. The first one scanned the room and when his eyes landed on me he smiled. Not a friendly smile. The kind that made your skin crawl. The kind that said he already knew he was going to win."There she is." His voice was smooth and

CHAPTER 8

LIAMI watched her shut down. It happened in real time, right in front of me, and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it.One second she was standing there covered in blood with a knife in her hand looking like she could take on ten more wolves. The next second the color drained from her face and her eyes went somewhere far away. Somewhere I couldn't follow. The Beta, Theo, caught her before her knees gave out. He moved fast and quiet, wrapping an arm around her waist and guiding her to a chair at the kitchen island. The one that wasn't destroyed. She sat down and stared at the counter like it held the answers to every question the dying wolf just shoved into her head.I tried to stand. My body screamed at me. The stitches she put in were holding but barely, and the blood loss was making the room tilt every time I moved too fast. Kain was raging inside me. He wanted to go to her. Wanted to be the one holding her up. Wanted to rip apart anyone who put that look on her face.I to

CHAPTER 9

NEAHI didn't sleep. I sat on my bed with my back against the wall and my knife on my lap and I stared at the door until the sun came up. Every creak in the house made my hand tighten on the grip. Every shadow that moved across the window made my heart jump.Theo stayed downstairs. I heard him pacing for most of the night. Slow, steady steps that went back and forth across the living room floor like a metronome. He was thinking. Processing. Deciding who to trust and what to do next. That was Theo. He didn't react. He calculated.Shane and Miles rotated patrol shifts outside. I could hear them checking in with each other through the broken back door that they covered with a tarp and some boards. It wouldn't stop a wolf but it would slow one down. That was the best we could do until morning.Liam was on the couch. I told Theo to put him back in the clinic but Theo said he wanted everyone in one location. Easier to defend. I didn't argue because he was right, but knowing that man was sle

CHAPTER 10

NEAHThe room stopped. My lungs stopped. My heart stopped. Everything in the world just ceased to exist except the sound of breathing on the other end of this phone call."Neah, honey, I know this is a shock. I need you to breathe for me."I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. I couldn't think. My brain was short circuiting, firing in a hundred directions at once and landing nowhere. The voice was hers. I knew it the way I knew my own heartbeat. The soft cadence, the way she stretched out the vowels in my name, the warmth underneath every word. This was my mother's voice. My mother who I buried. My mother who I mourned for three years. My mother whose death rewrote every chapter of my life."You're dead." My voice came out hollow. Mechanical. Like someone else was using my mouth."I know what you think happened. I know what they told you. But I need you to listen to me very carefully because we don't have much time.""You're dead!" Louder this time. The phone was shaking in my hand so
