PROLOGUE: Three Weeks In

The kitchen was supposed to be empty.Aria's hands trembled as she reached for the flour on the top shelf of the storage pantry, her mind racing through the list of tasks Mrs. Chen had assigned her that evening. The rest of the staff had retired to their quarters an hour ago. The massive Blackwood estate was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and her own quickening breath. She should have known better. She should have known he would find her.The pantry door clicked shut behind her with a finality that made her stomach drop. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was. Her body knew before her mind did the sudden heat that flooded her core, the way her nipples hardened instantly against the thin fabric of her uniform, the wetness that pooled between her thighs without permission.Three weeks. It had only been three weeks since that first night, and he had completely unmade her. Rebuilt her. Ruined her for anyone else."Did you really think you could avoid me all day?"

Chapter 1: The Diagnosis

Three Weeks Earlier...The fluorescent lights of St. Mary's Hospital flickered overhead, casting sickly shadows across the worn linoleum floor. Aria Chen sat in the waiting room, her leg bouncing with nervous energy as she watched the second hand on the wall clock tick forward with agonizing slowness.4:47 PM.Dr. Morrison was thirteen minutes late. She told herself that was normal. Doctors ran behind schedule all the time. It didn't mean anything. It didn't mean the test results were bad.It didn't mean her mother was dying.Stop it, she commanded herself, digging her nails into her palms hard enough to leave crescent-shaped marks. Don't think like that. But she couldn't help it. She'd seen her mother's face growing paler over the past six months, watched her vibrant, unstoppable force of nature reduced to a frail woman who could barely climb a flight of stairs without stopping to catch her breath. The cough that wouldn't go away. The weight loss. The way her hands trembled when she

Chapter 2: The Application I

Aria's apartment was a small studio in the cheaper part of town where sirens were a nightly lullaby and the neighbors' arguments bled through thin walls. But it was hers, and more importantly, it housed everything she needed for her various identities.Three computer monitors sat on a desk cobbled together from IKEA parts and stolen milk crates. Medical textbooks lined shelves alongside art supplies and advanced mathematics journals. In the corner, several canvases leaned against the wall, her paintings, done under the pseudonym"A. Ren."Wealthy collectors paid thousands for her work without ever knowing the artist was a twenty-four-year-old woman who lived in a studio apartment and sometimes survived on ramen. She had many faces, many identities. It had always been a survival mechanism being the smart girl who could hack systems, the artist who could forge documents, the medical prodigy who'd finished her degree at twenty.Multiple skill sets meant multiple income streams, and after

Chapter 3: The Application II

Photographs of the Blackwood Estate covered nearly every inch satellite images, street-view captures, photos pulled from society pages showing glimpses of the grounds during rare charity events. Red string connected various points, mapping out security camera placements, entrance points, guard rotation schedules she'd extrapolated from observation patterns captured over the past two days of watching traffic on their private road via traffic cameras she'd hacked. In the center of it all was a collection of photographs: Damien Blackwood.Professional shots from business magazines Forbes, Fortune, Bloomberg Businessweek. Him in perfectly tailored suits, leaning against desks or standing in front of floor-to-ceiling windows with the city skyline behind him. Always in control. Always commanding the frame. There were candid shots too, paparazzi photos from charity galas and business conferences. Him exiting luxury cars, talking on his phone, occasionally caught mid-laugh at some comment fro

Chapter 4: She Passed The interview

Aria spent the next twenty-four hours in a state of controlled anxiety, obsessively checking the burner phone for emails, jumping every time it vibrated with spam messages. She distracted herself by refining Sarah Mitchell's backstory, memorizing every detail until she could recite the fictional woman's life history without hesitation. Where she went to high school (Lincoln High in Portland). Her favorite subject (English literature). The names of her previous employers' children (the Morrisons had three: Emma, James, and little Sophie; the Chens had two: Michael and Grace).Details mattered. One small inconsistency could unravel everything. She also visited her mother guilt finally overriding her obsession with the mission.Mei looked slightly better than she had two days ago, which Aria knew was probably just a temporary reprieve. Wasting Syndrome progressed in waves periods of relative stability followed by rapid decline."You look tired," Mei observed as Aria settled into the chai

Chapter 5: The Interview

At exactly 1:45 PM, Aria pulled her aging Honda Civic up to the main gates of Blackwood Estate. The gates themselves were a work of art ornate ironwork that probably cost more than most houses, flanked by stone pillars that spoke of old money and older power. Security cameras tracked her approach from multiple angles, and she could see at least two guards visible in the gatehouse. This wasn't just wealth. This was a fortress.Aria took a deep breath, smoothing down her navy dress one final time. Her hands were steady; years of living multiple lives had taught her how to compartmentalize nerves but her heart was racing. You're Sarah Mitchell, she reminded herself. Twenty-two years old. Previous employment with the Morrison and Chen families. Looking for a stable, long-term position. Earnest. Professional. Unremarkable. She pressed the intercom button."Yes?" A male voice, professional and slightly suspicious."Sarah Mitchell. I have a 2 PM interview with Mrs. Chen."A pause. She imagin

Chapter 6: First Encounter

The foyer alone was larger than Aria's entire apartment. Marble floors polished to a mirror shine. A sweeping staircase that curved upward. Art on the walls that she recognized originals, worth millions. The faint scent of expensive cologne and fresh flowers. This was a different world. A world of wealth and power so far removed from her reality that it might as well have been another planet. And she was about to lie her way into its heart."This way," Elizabeth said, leading her down a hallway lined with more priceless art. "We'll talk in my office. I must warn you, Ms. Mitchell, we run very thorough background checks. If there's anything in your history that might cause concern, now would be the time to mention it."Aria's heart stuttered, but she kept her expression open and guileless. "Of course. I have nothing to hide."What a lie that was.Elizabeth's office was smaller than expected but elegantly appointed. She gestured for Aria to sit in one of the chairs facing her desk, then

Chapter 7: First Day Of Work

Aria woke at 5 AM to her alarm, her stomach tight with nerves.Today was the day. Her first official day as Sarah Mitchell, maid at Blackwood Estate. Her first real step toward accessing the greenhouse and saving her mother. And her first full day of being in close proximity to Damien Blackwood. She'd dreamed about him last night fragmented images that left her unsettled. Gray eyes that saw too much. That slight smile that felt like a promise and a threat. The way her body had responded to his nearness, heat flooding through her at a simple brush of his arm.Stop it, she commanded herself as she dressed in the plain clothing she'd packed jeans and a t-shirt that would be replaced by her uniform once she arrived. He's just a man. A very rich, very observant man, but still just a man. You're here for one purpose. Don't get distracted. But even as she thought it, her traitorous mind replayed that moment in the hallway. The intensity of his gaze. The electricity when they'd touched.Dange

Chapter 8: In His Office

At 11:55, Aria stood outside the kitchen with a perfectly arranged lunch tray. Grilled salmon, roasted vegetables, a side salad with dressing in a small crystal container. Black coffee with raw sugar on the side. Fresh fruit. Everything positioned exactly as Lucy had demonstrated."You've got this," Lucy said encouragingly. "Just be professional, don't make eye contact for too long, and get in and out quickly. Easy."Easy, Aria thought as she carried the tray toward the stairs. Right. The third floor was quieter than the rest of the house. Carpeted hallways that muffled sound. Fewer windows. An air of privacy that felt almost oppressive. She could see why staff avoided coming up here it felt like trespassing even with permission.Damien's study was the third door on the left, just as Lucy had described. Aria paused outside, balancing the tray carefully, and knocked."Come in."His voice sent a shiver down her spine. Deep, commanding, with an edge that made it clear he expected obedien

Chapter 9: He's Also Fucking Scary

The staff dining hall was buzzing with conversation and the clatter of dishes.About fifteen people were gathered around tables, eating and talking, the atmosphere surprisingly relaxed.Lucy guided her to a table where a few other younger staff members sat."Everyone, this is Sarah! Sarah, this is Maria and Chen housekeepers like us and that's David and Tom from groundskeeping."Friendly nods and welcomes. Aria slipped into the role easily, asking questions about how long they'd worked here, what the family was like, keeping her curiosity carefully casual."The Blackwoods are actually pretty decent," Maria said. She was older than Aria by maybe five years, with the air of someone who'd seen a lot."As long as you follow the rules and don't cause drama. Mr. Blackwood especially he's fair but he doesn't tolerate incompetence or indiscretion.""He's also fucking scary," Tom added. "Like, I've seen him completely destroy business partners with just words. Ice cold. Ruthless.""But he trea
