He had not planned to design Ada's room before December. The sequence he had intended was: the section from the south edge first, then the north elevation corrected, then the full plan, then the individual rooms in order of complexity. Frances's room first — the grandmother's room requiring the most careful attention to the long body, the room for the person who knew the December of the site and deserved a room adequate to that knowledge. Then Claire and Tom's room. Then Reuben's room, already partially drawn in the margin sketches and the message exchange about the desk-sill. Then Ada's room last, the smallest room, the room for the four-year-old who would grow into it and whose requirements would change faster than the building could respond to them. This was the intended sequence. He changed it on a Tuesday in the second week of November when Claire sent him a photograph. She had not explained the photograph. She had sent it with no message — just the image, the way you sent someth

He made the full plan on a Monday in the first week of December. Not the first time the plan had existed — there had been rough plans since September, the site boundary and the contour lines and the river to the north and the south edge marked. There had been the sketch plans made during the section from the south edge, the rooms placed in approximate relationship to each other, the threshold room at the south and the kitchen behind it and the bedrooms distributed above. But those were the preparations. The full plan was the moment the building declared itself — the rooms in their true relationship, the walls measured, the thresholds placed, the building as it would be built laid out on the page without approximation. He had been building toward it for six weeks. He had the south threshold room and the kitchen and the four bedroom drawings and the corrected north elevation and the section from the south edge. He had the family's knowledge in the notebook — the south edge from ten unti

Ellie rang on a Saturday. Not a message — a call, the way Tom had called in November, the question that required the voice. He was at his desk with the three-generation commission drawings spread across the board and the December afternoon light moving across the south window of his office and he answered and heard the background of her — the house, the piano finished, the Saturday afternoon quiet."I've been thinking about something," she said."Tell me," he said."The library child," she said. "The one who draws the light."He had written to Ellie about the four-year-old in October, when the Thursday sessions began. He had written because Ellie had asked — she had asked in September, before the programme started, whether he would tell her about the children who used the corner. She had asked this the way she asked about things she had designed for — with the proprietary attention of the person who had contributed to the making and felt entitled to know how the making was received. He returned to the drawing board on a Monday in the second week of January. Not the first Monday of the year — he had been in the office since the third, the practical work resuming: the correspondence and the consultations and the site reports from Colin on the community centre, which was progressing through its final phase, the internal fit-out and the column and the floor and the light. But the drawing board had been quiet since the solstice. He had not drawn a new section since December. He had been preparing to draw — reading the notebooks, walking the three-generation site alone on a January morning, sitting with the full plan and the room drawings spread across the board without adding to them. Preparing the way he always prepared. Waiting for the moment when the section was ready to begin. The moment came on Monday in the second week of January. He sat at the board in the morning with the new commission notebook open and the full plan to his left and he picked up the pencil an

Frances rang on a Sunday. He was at home — the flat, the south window, the January afternoon. He had been reading, not working, the book open on his knee and the light from the south window moving across the page in the way the January light moved: slowly, with the quality of something returning rather than arriving, the year beginning its lengthening in the increments too small to see from day to day but present in the afternoon as a warmth that had not been there in December. He answered and heard the kitchen behind her — the particular acoustic of the rented kitchen, the slight echo off the hard surfaces, the sound of the room he had sat in in November with the flour on the wrist and the dough in the bowl."I've looked at the section," Frances said. Not: thank you for sending it. Not: Claire brought it on Thursday. Just: I've looked at the section. The statement of a person who had done the thing and was now ready to discuss it."Good," he said."I want to ask you about the steps,"
