Chapter 91: Jenny's Labor

It started at two in the morning on a Wednesday. Not dramatically. Not with the sudden rush of water and cinematic urgency I had been quietly dreading for eight months. It started as a low persistent ache in my lower back that I told myself was the mattress and the position and the general indignity of the third trimester. I turned over. I counted the ceiling tiles. I pressed my hand against my stomach and felt the baby shift, slow and heavy, the way she moved at night when she thought I was asleep. At two forty-seven the ache became something else.Something with a shape and a rhythm to it.I sat up."Harry."I said it at normal volume through the wall, which was thin enough that I had heard him breathing some nights when neither of us was sleeping well. A silence. Then his door. Then his feet on the hallway floor. He opened my door and turned on the lamp and looked at my face."How far apart," he said."Seven minutes. Maybe six.""How long has it been happening?""An hour. Maybe mor

Chapter 92: The Birth

Diane brought them in one at a time.Harry first, because he was already in the room and had not left. He was sitting in the chair beside my bed with his elbows on his knees and his eyes on Josephine, who was in the hospital bassinet doing the serious, focused work of existing. He had been looking at her for twenty minutes without saying much."She has your mouth," he said."She has my father's hands," I said. "Look at the fingers."He looked. Something moved across his face."Long," he said."He used to say they were fishing hands. He said a man with long fingers could feel the line better."Harry was quiet for a moment."Jo," he said, trying the name."Jo.""It suits her.""She suited it," I said. "I just listened."My mother was in the chair on the other side of the bed.She had not let go of my hand since the birth, a loose hold, the kind that does not demand anything but refuses to be the one to let go first."There is something else," I said.Harry looked at me."A middle name,"

Chapter 93: The Photograph

The photograph ran at six forty-seven in the morning.I was asleep when it happened. Jo was asleep. Harry had gone home at midnight to shower and change, my mother was on the cot Diane had arranged in the corner, and the maternity ward was in its three-in-the-morning quiet, the specific hush of a place where the loudest things happening are the smallest people arriving.By the time I woke at seven, Renata had already called twice.Harry walked back in at seven fifteen with coffee and a paper bag from the place two blocks from the hospital that made the kind of breakfast sandwich I had been craving for six weeks. He set the bag on the table beside the bed. He looked at my face."You saw it," he said."Renata called at six fifty.""I saw it on my phone in the parking garage." He sat down. He did not open the bag. "Someone in the ward. A nurse, probably. They sold it last night while we were all in the hallway.""What does the photograph show?""Me holding Jo. Her face is not visible. Ju

Chapter 94: The Statement

Renata drafted it in forty minutes. She read it to us in the hospital room at two in the afternoon, the three of us arranged around Jenny's bed in the specific configuration we had settled into without discussing it, Harry on the left, Fabiola standing near the window, my mother in the corner with Jo because my mother had decided that holding Jo was her primary occupation for the foreseeable future and nobody had argued."The Alejandro family is currently undergoing a period of private restructuring," Renata read. "We ask the press and public to respect the privacy of all family members, particularly those who are newly arrived."Silence."That is it?" Harry said."That is it.""It says nothing.""Correct.""It does not confirm anything or deny anything.""Also correct." Renata looked at him over her glasses. "Which is precisely its function."Fabiola turned from the window."The press will read private restructuring as confirmation that the marriage is over," he said."Yes," Renata s

Chapter 95: The Will

The board member's name was Gerald Fitch. He was sixty-four, a civil engineer by training who had joined the Royal Gold Mine board twelve years ago when Alvin had needed someone with infrastructure credibility to legitimize the northern expansion's environmental presentations. He sat across from Renata at nine in the morning in her office and he put a folder on the table and he pushed it across without opening it."What is in there," Renata said."Correspondence," Fitch said. "Between Alvin and the primary environmental consultant on the northern expansion. Eighteen months of it. Specific requests for altered survey data. Specific payments routed through the foundation.""Protocol Delta.""Yes." He folded his hands. "I received copies because I was the infrastructure liaison on the project. I was supposed to sign off on the consultant's final report. I read the correspondence and I understood what it was and I did not sign off.""What did you do?""I told Alvin I had concerns. He told

Chapter 96:Alvin's Visit

I was home from the hospital for three days when it happened.Home meaning Harry's apartment above the warehouse on Holt Street, which had become home in the way places become home when you stop expecting them to be temporary. Jo's things were in the second bedroom, the cream rabbit on the dresser, the gray socks with the yellow stripe folded in the drawer, the yellow blanket my mother had finished knitting two days before the birth folded over the arm of the chair in the corner. Fabiola had delivered it all from the storage unit on Piedmont the week before. It smelled of cedar and old coffee and the particular warmth of a place where people were genuinely comfortable.I was feeding Jo at eleven in the morning when I heard Harry's voice at the front door. Not raised. The opposite of raised. The specific controlled quiet he used when something required the most careful version of himself.I heard the second voice immediately.I set Jo against my shoulder. I stood up. I walked to the ha

Chapter 97: The Trial Date

The trial date came down on a Tuesday morning.Renata called me at eight forty-seven. I was at the kitchen table with Jo in the carrier against my chest, the way I had started wearing her in the mornings so my hands were free and she could hear my heartbeat while I worked through the day's paperwork. She was three weeks old and had already developed opinions about being set down."March fourteenth," Renata said. "Ten months from now. Federal criminal trial, attempted murder and racketeering. The civil suit will follow.""Ten months," I said."It is faster than average for a case this complex. Marsh pushed for it. The judge agreed given the bail violation.""The bail violation helped.""The footage of him at Harry's door was very useful, yes." A pause. "Jenny. His legal team filed their initial witness list this morning. You are on it. So is your mother. Harry. Fabiola. And Josh, even though he is in Savannah.""They are calling Josh?""He recorded the phone call. He is the primary sou

Chapter 98: The Stakes Rise

The board called Fabiola at seven in the morning. He told me about it that evening at the warehouse, sitting at the kitchen table with Jo in his arms, which had become a thing that happened now without anyone deciding it should, Fabiola arriving and Jo going to him with the reliable confidence of a person who has decided someone is safe."They want me as interim CEO," he said."When did they decide?""Emergency session this morning. Stock opened at sixty-one. Three months ago it was ninety-four." He looked at Jo. "Thirty-three points in ninety days. The Ashworth family sent a letter yesterday. Formal language. They are reviewing whether to withdraw entirely.""What did you tell the board?""I told them I needed twenty-four hours.""Why?""Because I wanted to talk to you first."I looked at him across the table. He was in a plain shirt, no jacket, the version of himself that had been slowly emerging since the board meeting, since the Decatur house, since the hallway outside the hospita

Chapter 99: Megan's Revelation

My mother called on a Sunday evening."Bring Jo," she said. "Just you and Jo. Come for dinner.""Is everything all right?""Everything is fine." A pause. "I made the soup. The white bean one."She only made the white bean soup for serious occasions. I had understood this since I was nine years old."I will be there at six," I said.Clement Street looked like itself. The dogwood my father had planted was in its late summer form, the blossoms long gone, the leaves full and deep green in the evening light. The porch had its broken-backed slipper missing from the left shoe, still not replaced, still my mother's quiet preservation of a man who had bought them and worn them and would not want her to throw them away just because he was gone.I came up the steps with Jo in the carrier. My mother opened the door before I knocked. She looked at Jo first. She always looked at Jo first."Come in," she said. "She looks bigger.""She is five weeks old.""Babies grow fast when they are paying attent

Chapter 100: The Quiet Moment

Jo had been asleep for eleven minutes.I knew because I had been counting. Not anxiously. The way you count things when your mind has finally gone quiet enough to notice small details again. The October light came through the tall warehouse windows in long gold bars. The city blinked beyond the glass.I stood at the window and let it happen.Harry's footsteps came down the hallway. He stopped beside me. He looked at Jo against my shoulder. He looked at the city."She is actually asleep," he said."Eleven minutes.""That is a record.""Do not say it too loud."He almost smiled. "What are you thinking about?""The river," I said."The Coosa?""I want to take her there. Not soon. When she is old enough to stand in the water." I looked at Jo's face. "I want her to feel the current against her shins and understand why he loved it.""She will," Harry said."You sound certain.""She already pays attention to everything," he said. "She is going to be the kind of person who understands rivers.
