Chapter 121: Josh's Postcard

The postcard arrived on a Wednesday. It came in the regular mail, which still arrived at the warehouse address because we had not updated everything to the lake house and probably never would, the warehouse being the kind of address that felt permanent in the way places feel permanent when enough things have happened in them. Tasha brought it up from the building's mail collection when she came for the Thursday briefing, tucked between a board filing and a community fund quarterly report, a plain postcard with a Pacific Northwest postmark.Portland, Oregon.I recognized the handwriting before I read the name. The front of the postcard was a photograph of a bridge over a river at dusk. Not a dramatic bridge. An ordinary one, the kind of bridge that exists in cities for practical reasons and nobody makes a point of noticing. The water below it caught the last light.I turned it over.Jenny.I am in Portland. I work for a small accounting firm. We do nonprofits mostly. The kind of work t

Chapter 122: Megan Settles

My mother bought the house on a Thursday. Not the house I expected. I had been quietly monitoring the listings in her neighborhood, the ones Renata had flagged as appropriate for a woman who now had access to a settlement fund that could have bought her a great many things she had spent nineteen years cleaning floors without. I had been thinking about the kinds of houses that represented a life restored. Proper rooms. A kitchen with good light. Something that said the difficulty was over. She bought a house on a quiet street in the same east-side neighborhood where we had grown up, four blocks from Clement Street, smaller than the house we had grown up in by two rooms, with a covered porch and a backyard that was mostly overgrown and a kitchen that needed the countertop replaced. She called me the day she signed."Mama," I said. "You can afford...""I know what I can afford," she said. "I bought what I wanted.""The countertop needs replacing.""I know. I am going to replace it myself

Chapter 123: Press Frenzy Subsides

I noticed it first in an airport.Atlanta to Charlotte, a Tuesday morning flight, the kind of short business trip that had become the ordinary texture of the job, a meeting with a regional environmental compliance officer and a community investment presentation and a flight home in time to put Jo to bed. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that required strategy or preparation beyond the presentation folder and the good coat.I was in the security line at seven forty when I understood that nobody was looking at me.Not the deliberate not-looking of people who recognize a face and are being polite about it. The genuine not-looking of people who have no reason to look. The man behind me was reading something on his phone. The woman ahead was reorganizing her carry-on with the focused irritation of someone who has done this a thousand times and is still not reconciled to the tray system. The TSA officer looked at my boarding pass with the professional indifference of a person whose job requires se

Chapter 124: A visit From Veronica

Tasha knocked at two fifteen on a Wednesday. The specific knock she used when something required judgment before entry, two knuckles, a pause, which was different from the single knock of routine delivery and the three-knock urgency of a call that could not wait."There is a woman," Tasha said. "She does not have an appointment. She says she knows you and that it is personal and not legal.""Name?""Veronica Salt."I set down the remediation file."Send her in," I said. She was in the black coat. Not the same one, probably. But the same color, the same cut, the same quality of a woman who had always worn black as a decision rather than a default. She had the dark hair still, shorter now than I remembered from the kitchen visit and the garden gate message and the Miami safe photographs. She looked like a woman who had been somewhere and come back from it with more clarity than she had left with. She stopped inside the door and looked round "Sit down," I said. She sat.She put her bag

Chapter 125: The Decision

It started with a Sunday that did not come. The table had been set for four, the way it had been set every Sunday since Fabiola had started coming back to the city, my mother with the good china she had decided to use every occasion now, Harry with the coffee that was too strong, Jo in the high chair my mother had found at the church sale, conducting the noisy ongoing negotiation with whatever food was placed in front of her. Fabiola's chair was empty. He had not called. Not the Sunday before, either. Harry had tried the Zurich number twice and the clinic in Oaxaca once, which Veronica's friend had given us, and the clinic had said only that Fabiola was no longer their staff and they could not provide further information and they were sorry. My mother said nothing. She had served the soup. On Monday I told Harry. Not in the office. At the kitchen table in the morning, before Jo was fully awake, in the specific private window between six and seven when the apartment was quiet a

Chapter 126: Fabiola's Reply

The letter arrived on a Friday. Not a text this time. A real letter, in an envelope, with a Mexican stamp and a postmark from the town Dwyer had found him in, and my name on the front in the small controlled handwriting I recognized from board memos and nursery notes and the Coosa River annotations and a sealed envelope that had sat in the bottom drawer of a desk for months.Tasha brought it up with the morning mail. She set it on the desk separately from everything else. Not on top of the stack. Beside it. The way you set something down when you understand it is in a different category from the other things. She did not say anything. She closed the door when she left.I did not open it immediately.I sat with it for a few minutes. The envelope was slightly thicker than the letter I had sent him, which meant more than one page, which meant he had found more to say than I had, which seemed right. Fabiola had always been a man who found more to say once he had decided to say it.The sta

Chapter 127: The Anniversary

The grave was in a small cemetery on the east side of the city. Not far from Clement Street. Not far from the house where my father had read the newspaper on Sunday mornings and gone fishing in the spring and stood on the concrete step for ten minutes in October without a jacket while I said my first word inside. The cemetery had old trees and a stone path and the particular quiet of a place that has been holding people's grief for a long time and has gotten very good at it.We had not come often enough. That was the first thing I thought when Harry's truck turned through the gate and I saw the trees and the path. Not an accusation. Just a recognition. We had not come often enough and the reason was the same reason my mother had worn the coat and kept the survey document sewn into its lining for six years, which was that the grief and the fear and the unanswered thing had made the grave a place of incompletion rather than a place of rest. The thing was answered now.We had come.Harry

Chapter 128: Harry Proposes

My mother stayed for dinner. She had not planned to. She had intended to have us drop her at Clement Street on the way back from the cemetery and go home to her garden and the good china and the specific peace she had been building since spring. But when we pulled up to the lake house she had looked at the water in the late afternoon light and said just for dinner and we had all understood that just for dinner was exactly right. She made the white bean soup. She made it in the lake house kitchen the same way she made it everywhere, from memory, without measuring, with the authority of a woman who had been making the same soup for thirty-five years and had long ago internalized the proportions the way a musician internalizes a piece of music, not as notes but as feeling.Jo sat in the high chair and watched her with the serious attention she gave to my mother's kitchen work. This had become a fixed ritual between them. Jo watched. My mother narrated. Between the two of them they were c

Chapter 129: The Quiet Wedding

My mother got ordained on a Tuesday and told us on a Sunday. She set the certificate on the table between the soup bowls the way she produced all significant information, without announcement, waiting to see who noticed.Harry noticed first."Megan," he said. "Is this...'"Licensed minister," she said. "State of Georgia. In case anyone needed one."I looked at her."We have not asked you," I said."No," she said. "But you are going to."She was right. We asked her the following Sunday. She said yes as if it had always been arranged. The garden was my mother's, which meant it was honest. No venue. No coordinator. No photographer whose name appeared in magazines. Dorothy's daughter came with a camera that belonged to a person who loved what she was doing, which was the only qualification that mattered.Twenty people. The rosebush had decided to participate. White blooms, dozens of them, which nobody had asked for and which arrived anyway, the way certain things arrive when the condition

Chapter 130: The Letter To Mexico

The wedding photograph arrived from the developer on a Wednesday.Dorothy's daughter had taken them the way she took everything, without staging or announcement, just a good eye and a camera and the specific attention of someone who understood that the real moment was usually happening slightly to the left of where everyone was looking. One photograph was the one.Harry and me at the end of the path with Jo's petals still in the air, caught mid-flight, white against the May garden green. Harry's face in the unguarded moment. Jo at the frame's edge with both arms raised. It looked nothing like the magazine cover. It looked like us.I wrote the letter that evening at the lake house table. No drafts. Just the true thing on the first try, the way I had learned to write to him.Fabiola.We married on a Saturday in May in Mama's garden. She officiated in the gray coat. Twenty people. No press. Jo was supposed to scatter petals along the path and instead saved them all and threw them at once
