I turned around in the kitchen and faced him, the cupcake still hidden under the white lid, and I looked at my husband leaning in the doorway in yesterday's shirt with his arms crossed and a small patient smile on his mouth. "You bought me a cupcake." "I bought you nothing." "There is a cupcake on the counter, Fabiola." "Then somebody bought you a cupcake." He pushed off the doorframe. He crossed to the island. He lifted the lid himself, looked down at the single candle, and his smile slipped a quarter inch. "I thought you would know who. From your face, you do not." He set the lid back down. He walked to the elevator. He left me alone in the kitchen with a cupcake neither of us had bought, and for the first time in five days, the thing on his face was not cruelty. It was confusion.
