ARREN. My vision blurred. Rage and fog in equal measure, both of them closing in fast enough that the world in front of me had gone to shapes and movement and the particular red that came when something in you stopped caring about anything except what was directly in front of it. Shot after shot after shot tore through the air around me. People ran in every direction, screaming, stumbling over each other, and I watched my people drop. Stray bullets and aimed ones, no distinction made between the two, dropping men and women and children who were running for their lives before they had a fighting chance at reaching the gates. Behind me the faction guards fired back. Their shots came out inconsistent, reluctant, the sound of people who were terrified of hitting the civilians still pouring through the line of fire between them and safety.
