“Can’t you see we’re dying?” Jake said, his voice tight as he faced the shadow guard who had barged into the room. “So, it’s acceptable to take a life just to save your own?” the man shot back. The moment the door burst open and the air conditioner cut off, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Fresh air rushed in. The students immediately let go of me and rushed out, gasping for air one after another. The shadow guard, however, yanked me up from the chair and pulled me against him. As my vision steadied, his face came into focus. The academic master frowned at him. “Who are you? Why are you disrupting my class? We’re in the middle of a practical trial!” I steadied my breath and said, with deliberate calm, “Everything that just happened was staged.” “Staged?” Muriel snapped. “We could’ve died in this class because of you!” She stopped herself mid-outburst, her eyes sliding toward Soren. “I-I mean… didn’t Gwen agree to drink the vials herself?” ‘Agree to what, exactly?’
