Nobody spoke on the rest of the drive back. Enzo had gone quiet in the back seat in a way that meant he was thinking rather than giving us space, which was somehow more comfortable. Luca drove. I watched the road and turned the history of it over in my mind and tried to find the shape of what my father had been building toward for twelve years. I couldn't find it yet. Back at the flat, Enzo put the kettle on without asking anyone, and Luca spread the papers back across the table, and I sat on the couch and waited. "Tell me properly," I said. "All of it."
