I REMEMBER MOST THINGS YOU TELL ME

CHAPTER 10 Freya's POV "You're not having a wedding ceremony?!" My mother shrieked as looked up from her desk like I had just told her I was planning to dissolve the pack. "Freya, you are the Valenwood heir. Do you have any idea what that looks like to the council families?" "It looks like I have priorities," I said simply. "The recruitment program starts in four days. I don't have time to plan a ceremony.” I threw my hands up, exasperated. "Then postpone the marriage until after the program,” she snapped. This wasn't her wedding, so why was she so concerned about it anyway! "I don't want to postpone it!" I argued back. "Then hire someone to plan the ceremony while you focus on the program." "Mother—" "This is exactly what I'm talking about." She set her pen down with a small precise click. "Every decision you make, you make it like you're the only person it affects. You are representing this family. You are representing four generations of Valenwood standing on th

PLEASE KISS ME

CHAPTER 11 FREYA'S POV "She cares about you. She wouldn't stop talking about you and how much she wants to see you happy,” Caelan said after a while. He was referring to Aurora, my bestfriend. Sometimes, I envied the relationship between them. Though they were distant cousins, I couldn't help thinking I want what they had for me and Iris. But attaining something like that was almost impossible. "Naah… she's a menace, but I will always love her," I said, before I sat down and started eating. And honestly, the food was genuinely, absurdly good, which made everything worse somehow. I knew I shouldn't be reacting to him this way. Feeling this warm and excited anytime I was around him. Liking every gift he brought to me. This was the fastest way to get your heart broken, but I couldn't fight the attraction. Oh moongoddess… I can't bear another heartbreak. Especially not from someone like Caelan. We ate mostly in silence. The comfortable kind that really didn't need filli

IS THAT FREYA?

CHAPTER 12 Freya's POV Today was day one of the recruitment program. The Council Board Recruitment Program compound sat in the middle of the neutral zone like its own small territory. High walls, training grounds as far as you could see, a main building that looked like someone had crossed an elite academy with a military installation. Candidates had been arriving since early morning from every major pack in the territory, and by the time I walked through the main gates with my registration documents, the entrance hall was already crowded and loud. I registered under the Valenwood name, no title, no heir designation. I wanted to be evaluated on what I could actually do, not on what my family name made people assume about me. I had just filed my documents and turned to find Aurora when I heard her. "Is that Freya?" Selene's voice carried easily across the entire hall. She had positioned herself at the center of a group of candidates who had been congratulating her, surr

MY CAELAN. I'LL MAKE HIM PROUD

CHAPTER 13 FREYA'S POV Elder Mira, our supervisor, crossed the floor. She looked like she had watched this kind of performance for decades and had exactly zero patience left for it. She was older, silver-haired, with the council insignia on her collar and an expression that made candidates on both sides of the room stand up straighter in fear... or maybe it was just respect. She stopped in the middle of the floor and looked at Selene first, then at Rowan, then she let her gaze move across the wider group. "The council welcomes all eligible candidates regardless of rank," she started, her voice calm and monotone. "Ability is tested here and proven here. It is not assumed based on bloodline, title, or any claim a candidate makes about themselves before the trials begin." She held Selene's gaze for a moment longer than might have been deemed comfortable. "Family connections mean nothing inside this compound. The only currency here is performance. I trust that's understood by eve

THE RESULTS ARE OUT!

CHAPTER 14Freya's POVElder Mira placed the scenario on the desk in front of me early that morning and said we had two hours. It wasn't exactly a long time, but untold myself I could do it. There was no other collaboration, no outside materials, just the brief and whatever we already knew.I read through mine once, twice, again and again until I was fully immersed. A border conflict between two allied packs, both with documented territorial claims dating back three generations. Both sides had legal standing. Both sides had pride. Both sides had been letting this particular wound fester long enough that it wasn't really about the land anymore, it was about which pack would have to publicly back down, and neither of them was willing to be that pack.I had handled something almost identical eighteen months ago for Rowan. He had presented the resolution at the Northern Alliance Summit and received a standing commendation for his diplomatic instincts.I picked up my pen and started wri

MY FIRST PLACE GIRL

CHAPTER 15 FREYA'S POV “First place.” I whispered, my voice coming out a bit breathless. I stood in front of the board and read my name at the top of the list, I blinked in disbelief over and over again like I expected it to change. First? Out of forty-three candidates, including alphas and heirs from the most powerful packs in the territory. Goddess! I couldn't believe it. Aurora grabbed me from behind with both arms and nearly knocked me off my feet. "First! Freya, first place, say something!” She screamed into my ear in excitement. "You're going to dislocate my shoulder," I said as I jokingly pushed her off me. "I don't care." She hissed, finally letting go. Then, spun me around to face her, her eyes bright. "You have got to see the look on her face? Look at her." She laughed. I turned around to look at where her fingers were pointing at. Selene was standing a few meters away with her eyes fixed on the rankings. And despite the distance, I could tell the exact moment s

A DIFFICULT TASK I MAY NOT WIN

CHAPTER 16 Freya's POV "Written assessments test knowledge.” Selene said loudly at breakfast that morning. She wasn’t talking to anyone in particular but everyone within earshot could hear her, including me. I hated that. Her voice, coupled with whatever she had to say was certainly not the first thing I needed to start my day with. "Physical trials test what you actually are. What's actually in you." She picked up her coffee, looked across the table and at me with a pleasant smile. "It should be interesting." She grinned. A few people at nearby tables looked between us, waiting for whatever it was to unfold. "Yes," I said. "It should." She held my gaze for a moment and then went back to her breakfast. Aurora leaned in closer. "You can tell she’s been building up to this for three days." She whispered. Soon, breakfast was over and as usual we gathered in the main hall awaiting Elder Mira’s orders. She arrived barely five minutes later, her jaw set in determination. A

YOU CANT JUST SIT THERE AND WATCH HER SPOIL YOUR NAME

CHAPTER 17 FREYA'S POV I scanned the place while Selene watched me like a hawk. And, just then, my eyes landed on a thick branch nearby. I quickly picked it up, my mind racing with possibilities, tested it against the ground, and wedged it under the base of the boulder at the point where the incline began. Then I positioned myself at the end of the branch, anchored my feet to the ground, and pushed down with everything I had. Nothing for a long moment. “What do you think you’re doing?” Selene scoffed. “That won’t work.” She continued but I was too busy to give her the attention she wanted. I pushed down on the branch further, saying silent prayers that it won’t snap into two and then there was a low grinding sound from deep in the rock. And then a shift, gradual and then immediately, and like a miracle, the boulder rolled away; not completely, just far enough to create a gap along the right edge of the pass. I dropped the branch and slipped through. From the ridge abov

THE TEAM LEADER

CHAPTER 18 Freya's POV I found a note just in front of my door the next morning and I believe it was slipped underneath it. Before reading it, I knew it was from Caelan. It was written on one of the colored papers of the small notepad he always seemed to have in his jacket pocket. “I had to leave early. Don't forget to eat breakfast… I mean it. — C.” I sat on the edge of my bed reading it more times than necessary, before folding it and putting it in my jacket pocket. After that, I left the room in search of something to eat, just like he said. Aurora was already at breakfast when I got there, nursing her coffee like someone who barely got any sleep, didn't look too happy about it either. She immediately looked up when I sat down. "Third trial announcement today," she said. "I heard it's a leadership assessment." "Good," I said. She raised an eyebrow. "Good?" She asked. "Written and physical are done. Leadership is where the real gaps start to show.” I whispered. I

THE REPEATED THREAT FROM SELENE

CHAPTER 19 FREYA'S POV Like I expected, the execution was messier than the plan. The evacuation routes Aurora and Jin established took longer than we anticipated because two of the designated civilian areas had blocked access points that the brief hadn't mentioned. This meant adapting on the spot and redirecting through a secondary path that created distance but at least helped us in avoiding a chokepoint with a high rogue concentration. Aurora handled it without needing to check back with me, which was exactly what I needed her to do. The triage point Vera set up was up and running within minutes. She was efficient and unflappable and I made a mental note to tell her so afterward. Marcus on the defensive line was, in the end, excellent. To my surprise, he followed my calls without argument once we were in motion, adapted when the rogue positioning shifted in the second phase, and covered three positions in the final run where we went from containment to neutralization.
