Kevin dragged me behind one of the empty houses and slammed me against a wall.“Are you hurt?” he demanded. “Adam, can I call you Adam? Listen to me, Adam, focus. Did you get hit with debris?”I stared at him, my eyes hurting from how wide they were, and my mouth moved, and my throat tightened. Belatedly, I realized I was trying to form words, but no sound came.I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to think. My ears rang, and my head hurt. My skull hurt. My legs were weak. And my mom was missing.“Fuck!” Kevin cursed, eyes searching me from head to toe. “Adam, I need you to focus! Man, I’m sorry about this.”With that, he raised his arm. Within moments, his palm cracked against my cheek. The sound barely registered in my ears, but the pain did. It was like hot water against my cold, numb cheek. I may have let out a noise; I couldn’t tell.Kevin did it again and again until the pain fully registered, and I finally managed to give out a full-on, audible cry.“Are you alright?!”
