The Surrender

The morning after the rage, everything felt different. Not the house. Not the guards patrolling outside or the Council scouts hiding in the woods. Not the danger or the fear or the two heartbeats still fluttering beneath my palm.Us.Something had shifted between Kael and me. The walls he'd built — the ones I'd been slowly chipping away at — had crumbled completely. He looked at me differently now.Like I wasn't just someone he was protecting.Like I was someone he couldn't live without.---"I made you breakfast."Kael stood in the doorway of my room — our room now, though neither of us had said it out loud — holding a tray. Eggs. Toast. A glass of orange juice. A single flower in a tiny vase."Marta made this," I said."I carried it up the stairs.""That doesn't count as making breakfast.""It counts as effort." He set the tray on my lap. Sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm trying, Elara.""I know." I picked up the flower. A white rose. "Where did you get this?""The garden. It was you

The Plan

The new contract changed everything. Not legally. Not on paper. But in here — in our chests, in our bones, in the way Kael looked at me like I was the sun and he'd been freezing for years. But the Council was still out there.Marcus was still out there. And they weren't going to stop.---"I have an idea," I said that evening.Kael was sitting in the chair by the window, reading reports from the guards. Nothing new. Just more tracks. More signs. More waiting."Ideas from you are dangerous," he said without looking up."This one is very dangerous."He set down the papers."Elara.""Let me finish before you say no."He crossed his arms.I took a breath."Dr. Hayes says the Council wants me. Not just the baby. Me. My blood. My First Ones power.""Yes.""Then let's give me to them."---Kael stood up."No.""Let me finish —""No. Absolutely not. We're not delivering you to the Council like a package.""Sit down and listen.""I'm not sitting down.""Kael Blackwood, sit your stubborn alpha

The Goodbye

The morning of the plan, I woke up next to Kael. His arm was wrapped around my waist. His face was pressed into my hair. His breathing was slow and steady, but I knew he wasn't sleeping.Neither of us had slept."Today's the day," I whispered."I know.""Are you ready?""No."I turned in his arms. Faced him. Gray eyes. Dark circles. A man who was terrified but refusing to show it."Kael.""Elara.""I'm going to be fine.""You don't know that.""I know that you're going to come for me. I know that you're going to burn the Nursery to the ground. I know that you're going to carry me out of there and never let me go." I touched his face. "That's enough."He closed his eyes."It's not enough.""It has to be."---Lila was waiting for us downstairs. She was sitting on the bottom step, her arms wrapped around her knees, her eyes red."Lila —""You're leaving." Her voice was flat. Accusing. "You're leaving and you're not coming back."I knelt in front of her. "I'm coming back.""Everyone says

The Trap

The car stopped in front of a building I didn't recognize.Abandoned. Boarded windows. Graffiti on the walls. It looked like an old warehouse, the kind of place where things went to die."This isn't the Nursery," I said. The driver didn't answer. He got out. Opened my door. Grabbed my arm."Walk."I thought about running. My legs were weak, but maybe — maybe if I caught him off guard —"Don't." His grip tightened. "There are wolves in the trees. You won't make it ten feet."I looked at the woods.Glowing eyes stared back.Council wolves.Dozens of them.---They led me inside. The warehouse was cold. Dark. The air smelled like mold and old blood. Chains hung from the ceiling. Stains darkened the concrete floor. And in the center of the room, sitting on a wooden throne like she owned the world, was Councilwoman Voss."Elara Vance." Her scarred face split into a smile. "So nice of you to finally join us.""Where's the Nursery?""The Nursery is a lie. A story we tell to keep surrogates c

The Rescue

The warehouse burned.Flames licked at the walls. Smoke filled the air. Wolves screamed — Council wolves, trapped in the fire Kael's pack had set.Kael's arms were around me.Warm. Steady. Here."You came," I said."I told you I would.""You were supposed to wait. Follow the car. Attack the Nursery.""The car didn't go to the Nursery." His jaw tightened. "One of my own men. A traitor. We caught him ten minutes after you left. Made him talk.""Voss knew. She knew everything.""I know." Kael pulled me toward the door. "We need to go. Now."---The warehouse was collapsing.Beams fell. Glass shattered. The heat was unbearable.Kael's wolves cleared a path — fighting through the remaining Council wolves, cutting them down, clearing the way."Elara, stay close to me.""I can't run.""You don't have to run. Just don't let go of my hand."I didn't.---We made it outside. The night air was cold. Clean. I gulped it down like water.Kael pulled me behind a line of trees. His wolves formed a pe

The Escape

The cabin was supposed to be safe.Hidden in a valley between two hills. No roads. No paths. Just trees and silence and the smell of woodsmoke. For four days, it was enough. On the fifth day, the bounty hunters came.---I woke to shouting.Kael's voice. Sharp. Urgent."Elara, get up. Now."I sat up. Lila was already awake, her eyes wide, clutching her stuffed wolf."What's happening?""Bounty hunters. Council sent them. Marta spotted them in the trees.""How many?""Too many."Kael was already dressed. Armed. His eyes were silver."We need to go."---The next ten minutes were chaos.Marta packed food. Dr. Hayes gathered medical supplies. Kael and his wolves formed a perimeter.Lila clung to my hand."Ellie, I'm scared.""I know, sweetheart. But you have to be brave for me. Can you do that?"She nodded. Tears streaming down her face."Good girl. Stay close to Marta. Don't let go of her hand.""Where are you going?""I'm going with Kael. We're going to make sure the bad people don't f

The Safe House

The cave system was bigger than I expected. Not just one cavern. Dozens. Connected by narrow passages that wound through the mountain like veins. Some rooms were small — barely big enough to sleep in. Others were vast, with ceilings so high I couldn't see the top.Marta knew the way through all of them."Seraphine used to bring me here," she said, lighting candles along the walls. "When the Council got too close. When she needed to disappear.""She never told Kael?""Some secrets are too heavy to share."---We chose the largest cavern as our main living space. It had a natural chimney — a crack in the ceiling that let smoke out — so we could build a fire. A small spring bubbled up in the corner, providing fresh water. The floor was sandy, almost soft."It's not the house," Kael said."It's safe." I looked around. "That's all that matters."Lila was already exploring, her stuffed wolf tucked under her arm."Ellie! There's a room with sparkly rocks!""Don't go too far.""Marta's with m

The Hunters

Three days passed in the cave.Three days of hiding. Three days of waiting. Three days of Kael watching the entrance like a wolf waiting for prey.On the fourth day, the hunters found us.---I was helping Marta sort through the old blankets when Kael appeared in the doorway of the main cavern. His face was pale."They're here.""Who?""The wolves I saw. The tracks." He grabbed his sword. "Bounty hunters. Five of them. Maybe six.""Can you fight them?""I can try." He looked at me. "Stay inside. No matter what you hear. Don't come out.""Kael —""Promise me."I hesitated."Promise me, Elara.""I promise."He kissed me. Fast. Hard. Then he was gone.---The sounds of fighting echoed through the cave passages.Metal on metal. Grunts. Howls. The wet thud of bodies hitting the ground.I stood in the main cavern, my hand on my belly, my heart pounding.Stay inside. No matter what you hear.Lila was crying in the back room. Marta was with her, singing softly, trying to keep her calm.Dr. Ha

The Vision

We reached the edge of pack lands at sunset. The familiar trees. The familiar scents. The familiar ache of almost being home. But we weren't going home. Not yet."We should rest," Kael said. "Tomorrow we go to the house.""No."He looked at me. "No?""We're not going to the house.""Elara —""The evidence isn't there." I put my hand on my belly. "I saw her again. Seraphine. In a dream."Kael went still."What did she show you?"---I closed my eyes.Remembered.---The dream had been different this time.No field of white flowers. No silver sky.A room. Dark. Wood-paneled. A fireplace that hadn't been lit in years.Seraphine stood by a desk. Old. Oak. Covered in papers."The council killed me," she said. "Don't let them kill you.""Where are we?" I asked."The original pack house. Before the fire. Before they burned it down." She placed her hand on the desk. "The evidence is here. Not in Kael's room. Not behind the headboard. Here. In a hidden drawer.""But the pack house burned.""No

The Return

The evidence changed everything.Kael carried it in his jacket like a second skin. The names. The dates. The procedures. Seraphine's final gift to a world that had failed her."Where do we start?" I asked."The Thornwood Pack. They're neutral. They've never sided with the Council.""You trust them?""I trust their Alpha. Malric. He was my father's friend.""Was?""He's still alive. Last I heard."---The Thornwood Pack lands were a day's walk north.Through forests. Across rivers. Past burned-out cabins and abandoned villages — casualties of the Council's rise.Kael was quiet for most of the walk."Talk to me," I said."I'm thinking.""About what?""About what happens if Malric says no.""Then we go to the next pack. And the next. And the next.""And if they all say no?"I stopped walking. Turned to face him."Then we fight alone. You, me, Marta, Lila, and anyone else who believes the Council needs to fall.""That's not an army.""It's a family. Sometimes that's enough."---Thornwood
