She decided to cook. It was not a big decision. It was a small one, the kind that comes from needing to do something with your hands when your mind will not stop moving. The next morning she found something she was not supposed to find. She had brought a notebook from her unpacked things and a pencil and she sat at the table in the room and looked out the wide window at the garden below and began, slowly, to draw the garden wall. She had been there for about forty minutes when she stood to stretch and knocked the notebook off the table, and when she bent to pick it up she saw what was underneath the table pushed back against the wall, half hidden by the shadow of the table leg. Chapter Thirteen: What the Box Held

She closed the door quietly and turned around. The corridor was empty. She stood very still and listened to the house, to the floor, to the particular quality of silence that a house makes when it has heard something and is holding it. Nothing. No more footsteps. She locked the box and locked the small door and put the key in her pocket and walked very calmly down the corridor and down the stairs and into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of water and drank it standing at the sink with both hands wrapped around the glass. Margaret was not in the kitchen. The house was quiet and empty and entirely still around her. She set the glass down. She looked at the garden through the window and breathed. The photograph had shown a room full of children. Not one or two. Eight of them, ranging in age from perhaps four to perhaps twelve, sitting at tables with books and papers, in a space that had been designed specifically for them — small chairs, low shelves of books, drawings pinned to the walls, the particular ordered warmth of a place where children spent regular time. She told him everything. She started with the text, the three words, the unknown number, the dots that appeared and disappeared in the dark. She told him about the call in the garden and Jade’s voice and every word she could remember, in the order they had come. Chapter Sixteen: Cold Morning

The morning after everything changed, Ethan was gone before she woke up.Not unusual. He was always gone early. But this morning felt different the moment Nora opened her eyes and lay still in the quiet room and listened to the house. There was a particular quality to the silence, tighter than usual, like something had been pulled in and fastened down during the night. He appeared in the kitchen doorway and looked at her sitting at the table exactly where he had left her in the phone call and something in his shoulders settled slightly. “You stayed,” he said. “I said I would,” she said. He came into the kitchen and put his bag on the counter and stood for a moment with his hands flat on the surface, his back to her, the way a person stands when they are deciding what to say and how much of it to say.
