CHAPTER ONE

“Be at Ray hotel, 1st floor room 16 at 7pm. There is a surprise waiting for you,” Aria read the message three times, her brows raised. She got the anonymous message that morning.‘Could it be a birthday gift from my husband? Jeffery had never been the romantic type, but our third wedding anniversary is coming up. Maybe he is finally trying. What kind of surprise could it be? Should I go? There couldn't be any harm in it right?’ She thought. The driver cleared his throat from the front seat. “We have arrived ma'am.”“Oh, thank you,” she said, getting down and staring at the glamorous hotel.‘I hope I am not getting kidnapped or something.’ She walked into the lobby. Her heartbeat quickened.‘Being nervous is ridiculous, you’re his wife.’ she told herself. She stepped out of the car.She was given a key card to the room at the reception. She stepped out of the elevator and walked towards the room.‘So, Jeffery really arranged this.’‘Stop overthinking,’ she whispered to herself. She pr

CHAPTER TWO

Aria felt so much pain as she came to the conclusion that Jeffery had moved on and he really just wanted to get rid of her.“You should sign those papers,” he nodded towards the table where the papers sat.She collected the pen from him, and was about to sign but then she stopped. This will ruin her. How will she continue with her life when the news spreads throughout the media. If what he said was true, what are her parents' plans for her?She would have nowhere else to go.She shook her head and took a step back. “No… no, I cannot sign this,” her voice was barely audible and she dropped the pen.Tears glistened in her eyes as she tried to beg Jeffery. “Please, I am sure we can make this work. If it is because of the miscarriages we can try other options. I will ensure we are happy.”“Stop stalling Aria. Sign the papers and everything will go back to the way it was. You will continue with whatever it is you wanted to do before you were thrown into my life and I will be with the woma

CHAPTER THREE

Aria looked at Jeffery who didn't even look at her. His eyes were locked on Valerie like she was the most important thing in the world to him.Valerie looked at her with a smirk that disappeared so quickly it was like she imagined it.She and Jeffery were so entangled together and Aria watched as everyone looked at both of them with what resembled adoration. They never looked at her and Jeffery like that. They always looked at her like she was some intruder.Knowing she wasn't loved by anyone in the family was still okay. She could live with it. But seeing the family that she was part of for three years having no regard for her, hurt her more than she would have liked.“Baby tell everyone.” Valerie blushed as she leaned into Jeffery.“We have decided to sell the house. My Valerie doesn't like staying in used spaces so we got a new house closer to this place.” Jeffery said.Staying in used spaces? Aria thought.“Oh my God! You both will be closer to home!” Mrs. Watson exclaimed cheerfu

CHAPTER FOUR

Aria slowly opened her eyes, looking around the room. She groaned raising her hand to hold her head as she tried to remember where she was.The last thing she remembered was trying to pack up her things, and then the memories flashed through her mind. The doctor walked in and smiled at her, she tried to return the smile but it looked like it was plastered on.“Mrs. Watson don't try to get up now. You are still in a very fragile state.” The doctor said immediately.“Fragile state? How did I get here?” Aria asked still not able to put that piece together.“You were brought here by your house keeper.” He smiled brightly at her.‘His cheeks will probably be hurting from how hard he is smiling.’ she thought.“Am I feeling okay? Is there anything wrong?” “You are very fine, infact the baby is doing well too. You are just very stressed that is why I said you are in a fragile state.”“Baby?”“Yes, congratulations. I know how hard you've been trying to get pregnant.” The doctor beamed.Aria c

CHAPTER FIVE

Jeffery didn't look at Aria again as he turned and walked away leaving her in tears.Aria sobbed loudly for a long time. She couldn’t understand how everything got worse to this point. How does she start her life? Where would she go now? She Knew she couldn't go back to her parents house. Now that the merger was off they would not accept her and her step mother will make sure to make her life hell. The doctor came back into the room. Aria cleaned her tears and stared at the doctor who looked at her like she was a dying dog.The pity in his eyes almost made her start crying again.“I'm really sorry for everything that is going on with you Aria. Is there anything I can do to help.”“Thank you but there isn't anything you can do right now. But if you could help me get a ride I will be very grateful.”“Alright. I will do so.”Aria entered the car and headed to Jeffery's house to get her belongings was what she told herself but deep down she just wanted to see Jeffery again and plead with

CHAPTER SIX

Aria did not sleep. She lays in the master bed that filled the guestroom of Adrian Morelli's penthouse, staring at the ceiling while counting shadows made by city lights shining through floor to ceiling windows. Darkness never completely descended upon New York. Even when the clock struck three in the morning, the skyline throbbed and glittered as if oblivious to how one whole life can die between lunch and dinner. She laid her palm flat on of her belly. She was pregnant with a child. A baby that wasn't her ex-husband's, the man she'd dedicated four years of her life to. Inside her? A baby..which, according to the stone-faced billionaire napping in a far corner of this sprawling apartment like an evil dragon on top of its gold, had been put there by mistake, as casually as a misplaced memo. She almost laughed. Have she not been so tired, and nearly heartbroken? The contract sat upon the nightstand she left it on. Twelve pages. Embossed letterhead. A total at the very bottom that had n

CHAPTER SEVEN

The Morelli estate in Westchester was the type of mansion that could make you feel underdressed by just existing. It was hidden behind iron gates, which were guarded by ancient oaks whose roots had been cracking the cobblestone driveway for so long that Aria hadn't been alive yet; and the facade-pale limestone, with ivy spread and almost alive, and the entire stonework being gently lit up by subtle garden lighting, was something a European novelist would invent for a story about old money and old secrets. Aria was sitting next to the driver in Adrian's car and her hands were folded in her lap so that she would not be able to fidget. "They will definitely ask how we met, " she gave out. Adrian kept his eyes on the road. "I know." "What am I supposed to say?" "Say that we met at the Langham charity gala in February. A mutual acquaintance introduced me to you. You were there representing a fashion house." She was making a mental note of this. "And we have been seeing each other since?" "S

CHAPTER EIGHT

The shouting got to one half past eight and woke her up. Aria had figured out by the time she had been at Adrian's penthouse for three days that his place was a temple of silence. Thick walls, the staff moving like ghosts, and Adrian communicating in a tone that was, to all purposes, sub-vocal. A brisk exchange in the hallway would be the loudest thing in the whole place. So when she was hearing the voice of a woman, very loud, sharp and a tone intended specifically to carry, she instantly pulled herself out of sleep and her heart was beating loud in her chest. She got a robe and went out to look for the woman. Speaking the house staff with a look of contempt, the woman was in the main foyer. She was a kind of beauty that you can see in expensive things, a cover that has been polished, a very precise type of a kind that, from a distance, looks very effortless, but has, in reality, taken a lot of effort. She had black hair, light skin, and a stance that showed that she had been in many

CHAPTER NINE

The Morelli venue was used for the engagement party. It was an elegantly decorated glass and bronze hall on the forty-second floor that gave a view of the park. There was so much space that even Aria's childhood house would hardly be considered extravagant by comparison. Elena had planned everything so well as if she had been organizing such events for thirty years and had never felt scared even once by a guest list. Aria was wearing a dress that Adrian had chosen for her. It was a deep emerald silk dress which looked like flowing water and it also highlighted her skin tone. She decided to stay close to the main event and when the feeling of looking exactly like oneself struck her after a very long time, she was almost surprised by it. Not one who has been displaced. Not a third-rate substitute. One who has always been. Jeffery came with Valerie. This was her guess. She had almost calmly and very specifically made up her mind to handle it as one of those rare natural disasters. She w

CHAPTER TEN

At the center of the table, Margaret Anderson began to cry, no warning, no pretense. The dinner had been set up by Elena as a chance to mend fences between the morellis and the andersons, a carefully managed event meant to feel civil, like a charity gala run by someone used to handling delicate emotions. Aria sat there with Adrian, expecting silence, even frostiness, the quiet standoff one sees when people don't want to look at what they've lost. But Margaret didn't hold back, and her tears rolled down without pause, thick and sudden, that wasn't acting. Valerie had done that before, she'd stage emotions like fashion shows. This felt deeper, born from places no one could predict, tearing away at Margaret's calm like old paint peeling off wood. "Margaret " Elena rose quickly, startled, her voice trembling slightly. "One look just like her, plus " margaret's whisper slipped out between fingers clenched over her lips. She stared at Aria as if she'd stepped into a memory where time had st
