Mistaken Alliances のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 71 - チャプター 80

I did not panic.Panic was the wrong tool. I had learned that early and the learning had been reinforced many times.Instead I mapped it.I sat at my kitchen table in the Washington apartment on a Friday night with a legal pad and I drew the connections as I understood them. Serena Ashworth, released and quiet. Gerald Ashby and Vantage Consulting, now dissolved but the network still operational. Meridian Political Group, same address as a Vantage partner. The lobbying campaign against the access bill. Then I drew a second layer.Who benefited from killing the access bill? Not personally. Professionally. Commercially. The access bill would require participating law firms to dedicate a portion of their capacity to access cases at reduced or no fee. The firms that stood to lose the most billable hour revenue from that requirement were large corporate defense firms.I made a list of the largest corporate defense firms with significant New York client bases.Three of them appeared on the M

Nora was nine when she sent her first letter to a sitting judge.I did not know about the letter until the judge's clerk called my Senate office asking to confirm that the letter had come from my daughter.I called Kade."Which judge?" I said."Federal district court," he said. He sounded like a man trying to decide whether he was amused or alarmed. "Eastern District of New York. She wrote to ask why the case backlog in the access implementation had not been addressed in recent court orders.""She researched the court's docket," I said."Apparently yes," he said."And wrote a letter about it to the presiding judge," I said."A three-page letter," he said. "With citations."I sat for a moment with this information."What did the judge's clerk say?" I said."She said the judge read the letter and found it precise and wanted to confirm it was genuine," he said. "Apparently she thought it might be a law student using a child's name for some reason.""What did you tell the clerk?" I said.

The criminal access bill was the hardest legislative fight of my Senate years. It did not pass quickly. It took eighteen months from the day I formally introduced it to the day it reached the floor. In those eighteen months it was amended seven times, sent back to committee twice, and used as a political football by both parties in ways that had nothing to do with the families whose lives it would change.I went to visit Alejandro Cruz three times during that eighteen months. Not for strategy or data. Just to sit in the Brooklyn office and watch the work that the bill was supposed to serve and remember why the fight was worth having. On the second visit he introduced me to a client. A woman named Dani who had been charged with a non-violent offense and who had spent eleven months waiting for her case to be heard because the public defender caseload meant her case had to take a number.Eleven months. She had not been convicted. She had not been acquitted. She had simply been waiting in

The Supreme Court vacancy was announced on a Tuesday afternoon.A sitting justice, in her seventies, announced her retirement effective at the end of the current term. The announcement set the political world on fire in the way that Supreme Court vacancies always did, loud and fast and full of speculation.I was in a committee session when it broke. My phone buzzed six times in the space of thirty seconds and I kept it face down until the session ended. When I looked at it, the messages were from colleagues, from Preethi, from two journalists requesting comment, and from Kade, who had sent only three words.Your framework work.I understood immediately what he meant. For the past two years I had been collaborating with Dr. Okafor, who had moved to a Columbia faculty position, on the academic infrastructure that would protect the access legislation from constitutional challenge. We had been building the jurisprudential argument for why access to legal representation was a right implied

The primary opponent appeared in March. His name was State Senator Gerald Cope. He was well-funded, organized, and running on the argument that I had spent too much energy on national legislation and not enough on New York-specific concerns. It was not a dishonest argument. It was a real critique and it was being made by a real politician who genuinely believed it.I met him at a candidate forum in April where the moderator gave each of us time to address the other's record.Cope was polished and specific. He named three New York housing issues that my office had addressed at the state level but that he argued had not received adequate federal legislative attention. He was right that the housing issues were real. He was imprecise about what federal legislative action could actually achieve versus state and city level action, but that distinction was too technical for a forum and I was not going to make it in a way that sounded like I was evading.Instead I said something different.I
