WHERE ARE WE?

LENA'S POVI sat restlessly in the backseat of the cab, knees pressed together, fingers twisting the strap of my purse into a knot I'd never be able to undo later.Beside me, Julia scrolled through her phone, utterly unbothered.I, on the other hand, was calculating. How much did a decent set of lingerie cost? Fifty? Sixty? That could be grocery money.I was about to make the biggest financial mistake of my life. But maybe—just maybe—this would open Mitch's eyes. Make him see how much I wanted to be seen by him.I sighed.Debt was already choking me. And now this. According to Julia, we were going to a fancy store.Thrift stores were more my speed.I thought back to the last time I asked my husband, Mitch, for underwear.I hadn't been working until two years into our marriage, when everything started to fall apart.I lost our baby barely a month before.I asked Mitch if he could buy me a new set of underwear from a nice store."What happened to your old ones?" he asked."They are… the

RICH WOMENS

The cab driver didn't take us to the main entrance. Instead, a security guard directed him to a side road—the back road, where delivery trucks idled. We didn't join the line of luxury cars in the parking lot.Not a single cab in sight. Only expensive rides. This looked like a place I could only afford if I sold a kidney. Maybe two.The driver stopped. I was still staring wide-eyed like an owl.Julia paid him, and we got out. Then the driver came around to our side before I could say a word."Tips," he said.I blinked. "I'm sorry?"He looked us up and down—assessing. His eyes traveled from Julia's designer knockoff bag to my mended coat. Somehow, he still reached the wrong conclusion."You are billionaires, yes?" he said.I almost laughed."Shopping here." He thumbed toward the crystal palace. "Very rich women. So tips. I am an old poor man."Julia and I exchanged glances.Hers said: Did he just say billionaires?Mine said: Did he just say "womens"?I cleared my throat. "Sir, we're rea

THE ONLY EXPLANATION

MITCH'S POV When I got home that day, it was already 4 p.m. I pushed the front door, only to be surprised when it refused to open. It was locked. That meant Lena wasn’t home yet. Which was very strange. Lena’s morning shift at the little downtown café was supposed to end at 1 p.m., and she always came straight home to prepare dinner. Since I hadn’t come home yesterday after storming out angrily, I had expected her to be waiting with a nice hot meal, ready to apologize. It seemed I had been too soft on her. She had simply gone to work without a care and was now taking her sweet time coming home. That’s very bold of you, Lena. I rolled my tongue in annoyance and let myself into the house with my key. The living room and bedrooms looked spotless, as always. Nothing impressive. Vacuum lines on the carpet, throw pillows neatly fluffed, my dirty laundry folded and stacked on the dresser. Even the bathroom smelled clean and fresh. As expected. At least she was usef

WRONG NUMBER

My thumb hovered over her name. On second thought, I decided not to call and shoved the phone back into my pocket. Let her not think I’m sitting here waiting like some lovesick fool. The last thing I needed was for her to start feeling like she was somehow important to me, looking like that. Yes, she was a good cook, but so were most women. That was nothing special. I rummaged through the cupboards until I found an old packet of cornflakes at the back. The expiry date was three months ago. Whatever. I poured what was left into a bowl, added water because there was no milk, and sat down at the kitchen table to eat in silence. I kept checking the time impatiently, hoping she would come back soon. “What is wrong with her? Where the hell did she go?” Jake’s words came echoing back into my head. “Don’t you think she might be getting it somewhere else?” I paused mid-bite, spoon hovering. The idea of another man touching Lena… of all people. It was almost insulting. To me. To m

A MIRACLE AT THE RIGHT TIME

LENA'S POVThe ride back home felt like a dream. The kind where you're floating through something that can't possibly be real, waiting for the jolt that will snap you back into your body.I looked down at my hand.A thick envelope filled with cash.My heart wouldn’t stop pounding against my chest because I had never held so much money before.I held it tightly, as if the air might steal it away.Back there at Monica’s Luxury Fashion House, a woman had introduced herself as the manager and invited us to a VIP restaurant area. Julia and I were offered food… delicious food.I politely declined, but Julia had already started eating. She pushed me to try some.I was hungry, but I couldn’t risk gaining extra pounds. If Mitch was back home and the next morning’s weigh-in showed I had gained weight, it would ruin his birthday. So I tried harder to convince Julia that I was full. Then the woman—the manager—gave me this envelope with a smile, as if she were handing me a coupon for a free coffe

CHECKED

I watched the city blur past the cab window, smiling and ignoring the ache in my head. The excitement was so much that I kept checking the clothes I bought for Mitch to make sure they were still there. What are the chances? What are the chances that someone saw me at the cafe—me, Lena—and decided, "Yes. Her. She will be our lucky promotional customer"?I'm not an influencer.I don't have a single social media account. They just need me to write a review on their website. I used Julia's smartphone since I own a burner. And that's it?!It doesn't make sense.None of it makes sense.I slapped my cheeks hard.I noticed the cab driver steal a glance at me in the rearview mirror. His eyebrows were raised. He was probably questioning my mental health.I didn't care.I slapped my face again and again, trying to wake myself up from the longest, strangest dream of my life. But I didn't wake up.The bags were still there, and the envelope was still in my hand. The money was still inside, and the

A COMPLIMENT?

Getting to the entrance door, I pushed it open. Mitch, as I guessed, was home already. Actually, he was on the couch in the living room, hunched forward slightly, phone in his hand, thumb scrolling slowly. I was so excited I couldn't contain it. "Baby!" I called with a smile. The bags slipped from my fingers. Before he could look up, I crashed into him with my arms wrapped around his neck. I kissed him. Oh how much I have missed this. His body was warm—always so warm—so I buried my face in his shoulder. "What the hell has gotten into you? Don't you know you are heavy? Get off me" he snapped, pushing me off him. "Baby, you will not believe what happened today," I said, standing up straight. He was frowning at me while I was smiling so wide. The kind of smile that hurts your cheeks because your face isn't used to making that shape anymore. "What the hell happened that you came back at 5pm instead of 1pm?" I cut in. "Let me explain, baby. I was at the cafe, r

YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL

I smiled at him."Food will be ready soon".I said that because I just wanted him to say something to ease the tension. It wasn't about the food, I was sure, because his eyes were on me.I felt beautiful again. It's funny—even after I had the new haircut together with manicure and pedicure, all that beauty treatment and makeup—I just felt satisfied now because the man I did all that for actually noticed."You look bigger than last time I saw you."The words hung in the air between us.I froze, and my smile slowly vanished from my face. I couldn't have heard that right."Did you forget to take your weight loss seriously because I wasn't here to supervise you?"The knife slipped.I felt the blade glance off my fingernail. Luckily, I jerked my hand back just in time before it could cut through my skin.I stared at the vegetables, my eyesight blurring.Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't you dare cry."I asked you a question".His voice came, harsher."No. No, baby."My voice came out thin as I f

HAPPY BIRTHDAY IN ADVANCE

After cooking, just like he said, we went to the bathroom and checked my weight. My fingers trembled as I stepped onto the scale, my heart drumming against my ribs like a caged bird.It wasn't that I had lied, but my weight is not to be trusted. Even if I fast, somehow it always ends up disappointing me.I held my breath."Congratulations, you stayed the same weight. No improvement."Mitch said it sarcastically.A quiet wave of relief washed through me, though I didn't let him see it.I can take that sarcasm—if it had been higher than last time, I wouldn't be able to bear the weight of his disappointment. We walked back to the dining table.I plated his food carefully, making sure the portion looked generous. Then I sat across from him, chin resting on my palm, just watching him.He started eating, and I could only swallow my saliva, trying to hold the hunger inside until 6 p.m., when I would break my fast.Mitch must've been starving. He ate like a man who hadn't seen food in weeks.

SEXY FOR YOU

"You like it?" I asked impatiently. "Lena... where did you get the money to buy from Monica?" "The woman I told you about. She even offered to let me take as many dresses as I wanted. But I just took a lingerie for myself and selected those for you. I hope you liked them." He gave me a look. "A lingerie?" I shouldn't have mentioned it. "Yes, a lingerie," I whispered. "For who?" My cheeks burned so hot I could feel the pulse in my temples. "For me... I wanted to give you a sexy surprise. To spice up your birthday night." I closed my eyes, bracing myself—waiting for something discouraging. "Very well. Go put it on, then. Let me see you in it." My eyes flew open, and my heart slammed against my chest. "Wha... what?" "I said I want to see you wearing a lingerie." My cheeks burned. "Really?" He nodded, one corner of his mouth lifting. "Go on..." I was so excited. "Thanks so much, baby." I grabbed the other bag and practically floated to the guest
