Chapter 31

Cassian POV The first thing I want is food. I head for the kitchen.I don’t even look at the refrigerator. If there was anything in there, it would have gone rancid a long time ago, and I really don’t even want to see it. I’m going to pretend that it’s empty. It doesn’t smell bad in here, so whatever’s in there can’t be too horrible.I go to the cupboards instead. There are a lot of machines. I might consider taking them apart later to see if I can find anything worth keeping. I don’t know what they are. When it comes to kitchen equipment, I know the basics—forks, spoons, and plates. These fancy pre-Reversal gadgets that people used to have, though—I have no idea what they were used for. How much did these people really have to do to their food to make it edible? You could buy edible food in stores, for fuck’s sake. Finally, I find a bunch of tin cans in one of the lower cabinets. I pull several of them out and set them on the counter. It looks like they’re mostly vegetables, and I s

Chapter 32

Lyra POV After our meal, I take his hand and lead him to the bedroom.Right from the start, the energy around us is completely different. The last time we had sex, down in the tunnel, it was charged with fear. The time before that, in the stairwell of the high rise, it was so strange and new that I hardly knew what to think. But this time, it’s familiar. It’s comfortable.I take my time with him. I undress him slowly, peeling away the clothes that I just found for him to wear. He lies back on the mattress, watching me work, and I like being watched. It makes me feel sexy and powerful.“You should take your clothes off, too,” he suggests.“Should I?” I tease him. It’s dark outside, and we can only see one another as shapes and shadows. But the moonlight is coming in through the window, so it isn’t completely dark, the way it was in the tunnel.“Take off your shirt,” Cassian says. It’s almost like an alpha’s command. It’s not because I know I could resist it if I wanted to. But there’s

Cassian POV The light coming through the unshaded window wakes me up.Lyra starts to stir too, so I get out of bed and go quickly to the window. I pull the shade closed. I want her to get a little more sleep. She’s been through enough lately. It is so completely weird that I find myself caring for her. This wasn’t the plan at all. I was going to turn around and hand her right back to her pack. I mean, taking one night to ourselves does make sense because they wouldn’t buy it if I freed her and then walked right back up to them to claim the reward. They need to believe that enough time has gone by for her to have freed herself, gotten captured again, and gotten turned in.Also, I should turn her in to Paul, not to the pack. I’m not supposed to know who it is that’s looking for her. I’m not supposed to be able to find her specific pack by tracing their scent, even though I’m pretty sure I could pick them out of a lineup with my eyes closed after everything that’s happened. But am I rea

Chapter 34

Lyra POV “I still wish we could stay,” I say, looking fondly around the apartment that has been our shelter for the past few hours.“It’s dangerous to stay put anywhere,” Cassian says. He’s loading up his backpack with canned foods. We got really lucky here—we found two backpacks with straps like the ones on the backpack I lost. In addition to clothes and food, we’ve each rolled up a small blanket to take along with us. I thought about trying to cram in a pillow, too, but I really couldn’t justify it. Not when leaving it behind meant that I could add extra cans to my pack.“I know it is,” I say. “I’m just wishing.”“We’ve got to get moving,” he says, eyeing the door. “You want to find that coven, don’t you?”“You know I do.” I wonder why he’s acting so anxious. But it must be because he’s afraid the wolves are going to find us here. It won’t take them that long to figure out we’re not in the tunnels anymore if they send someone down to check. Between the fact that we ran in wolf form

Chapter 35

Milo POV Annie’s baby is dead.I’ve known that for a while, and so has she. The fact that she has to go through this labor anyway, even though her baby isn’t going to make it—it’s one of the cruelest things I’ve ever seen in my life.So when the two strangers show up, looking around the corner of the building at us like we’re some kind of exhibit in an old museum, my blood is already up and I’m just about ready to tear their heads off for it. Fuck them. Who do they think they are? They don’t know what this woman has been through.I turn on them, shifting as I do. I’m not going to let anyone hurt Annie any more than today has already hurt her. I’ll kill them if they try. Well, maybe not the big one—he looks like he might be able to take me in a fight. But I’ll kill his woman, and he’ll regret messing with me.The woman steps forward, her hands up.“We’re not going to hurt you,” she says.“Lyra, fuck, let’s just get the fuck out of here,” the man says.“They need help,” says the woman.

Chapter 36

Lyra POV Cassian carries Annie. She gives in to that easily enough, curls up in his arms and rests her head on his shoulder. I guess she’s past the point of resisting anything that’s done to her. It’s hard for me to imagine allowing a man I’d just met to pick me up and carry me—I’m not sure I’d even let Cassian do it right now—but I can’t imagine what Annie must be feeling. At least she’s going to live. Milo seems pretty sure of that.I think about my own mother. About how excited she was when my new brother or sister began to grow inside her. About how the rest of the pack started treating her like royalty. And then, one day, it was all gone, and then she was gone, and I was an annoyance nobody really wanted. The little daughter of the woman everyone who had pinned their hopes on—the one who had failed. It was so rare for a pregnancy to go as long as hers did.No one told me how great the risks were. I didn’t know I might lose her until I already had.So I have to kind of love Milo

Chapter 37

Cassian POV I hate to admit it. I really fucking hate to admit it. But Milo is kind of impressive. The nurses at the makeshift hospital took me aside after they had gotten Annie to a doctor. I guess they thought I must have helped with her delivery, and they told me whatever I did had probably saved her life.Of course, I didn’t do anything but stand there. It was Milo who did it. I know it was.We were close to the edge of town, and they wanted to go out and camp in the woods for the night.“Should we really be stopping?” I ask.“It’s dark,” Milo says.“Paul’s will be open all night,” I say. “We can keep going.”Lyra shakes her head.“We need time to rest, Cassian,” she says.I’m majorly conflicted. Part of me wants to give Lyra everything she wants, so I agreed. What is happening to me?Once we arrived at a good place to camp, Milo built a fire in about twenty seconds. I didn’t even see how he did it.But I know. It’s because he’s a Moon Caster. He’s a hybrid, like Lyra. And they’v

Chapter 38

Milo“All right,” I tell Lyra. “Focus on your hunger.”“I don’t know how to do that,” she says. She really is starting from ground zero here. I try to remember how my coven taught me these things, back when I was still learning.“Start by closing your eyes,” I suggest. “Then focus on the place in your body that feels uncomfortable. If you’re not sure, start with places that are comfortable. Your hunger isn’t in your hands.”She giggles.“No,” she agrees. She lies back on her back and rests a hand on her stomach. “Here.”“Okay,” I say. “You’re going to try to put that part of your body to sleep.”“How can I put a part of my body to sleep?” she asks.“You do it all the time,” I remind her. “Don’t you put your brain to sleep?”“I guess. I don’t really know how I do that. It just…happens.”“Okay, well, it’s a similar concept. And you’re going to use the power of the moon to help you.”I look up at the moon above us. It’s waning, and I’d prefer to be teaching her under a waxing moon becaus

Chapter 39

Lyra POV “I don’t understand,” I say to Milo. “Don’t understand what?”“How can you hate the covens but still be open to using magic?” I ask. “Are you for the Moon Casters or are you against them?”“It’s not that simple,” he says.“Really?” Cassian asks. “Seems pretty simple to me.” He tears away a chunk of the rabbit we caught for dinner with his teeth. “They’re monsters. They’re no better than Ravagers.”“They’re entirely different from Ravagers,” Milo says coolly. “And you’d be making a terrible mistake not to recognize that fact. Moon Casters have logic on their side. They’re evil, yes, but they’re capable of reason.”“So we’re supposed to hate them less because they’re rational?” Cassian asks.“Did I say that?” Milo asks. “I hate them as much as you do, I promise. They killed my mother. I’d kill every last one of them if I could.”“But you still use moon magic,” he says.“Well,” Milo says, “you don’t belong to a wolf pack.”“I don’t belong to anybody,” Cassian says, his lip curl

Chapter 40

Lyra POV The fire is burning low. Cassian is asleep—he has been for a while, snoring softly.“It was nice of him to let me borrow some clothes,” Milo says.“They’re too big on you, though.” My fingers are at the hem of his shorts. We’ve been moving closer and closer to each other for a while now, flirting with possibilities, and I don’t know what might happen, but I’m interested in finding out. “We’ll have to go find you something that’s a better fit tomorrow.”He nods.“I’m not in any hurry. These are fine for now.”I slide my whole hand into his pants, resting my palm against his hip.“They’re really way too big.”He looks at me. His green eyes look electric in the moonlight, and his hair is casting shadows on his angular face.“Are you his, Lyra?”“Cassian’s?”He nods.“No,” I say.“You’re not mates?”“We fuck around sometimes. We don’t belong to each other.”“Because I want to stay with the two of you.” His breathing is a little ragged, and I’m enjoying that. I move my hand towar
