ANAThe compound shook with the dull, continuous thud of iron and oak.Outside, at the main gatehouse, the first supply train had finally breached the lower yard. Heavy wooden flatbeds loaded with grain-sacks, bundles of ash-wood pikes, and barrels of salted lard groaned against the gravel, their iron-rimmed wheels screeching as the drivers whipped the draught-horses into a frenzy. Men yelled back and forth, their frantic orders echoing off the granite walls, drawing every spare eye and garrison guard toward the outer perimeter. The compound was looking outward. It was the only window we had.Sena and I slipped down the narrow spiral stairs of the eastern tower like shadows slipping over wet stone. I wore a dark grey wool cloak pulled low over my head, the deep hood throwing my face into absolute darkness. My heart pounded a hard, jagged rhythm against my ribs, but my hands were steady. In my right palm, tucked beneath the heavy wool of my mantle, I clutched a small brass oil lamp and

ANAThe corridor leading away from the lower records passage was black, damp, and smelled of centuries of cold river-silt.I stood wedged into the narrow recess behind an iron sconce, the heavy canvas sack containing the iron-bound *Book of Lineage* pinned tight beneath my left arm. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Two corridors away, the echo of Lieutenant Miller’s red-coats searching the main archives still rattled the flagstones, but the lower drainage passage had been our only clear route upward.Sena had gone ahead to check the landing. She was supposed to whistle twice—a low, flat sound like a roosting owl—if the stairwell to the eastern linen room was clear. But no whistle came. Instead, the heavy, scraping sound of iron boots against gritty stone cut through the quiet gloom."Hold right there," a coarse voice barked.Daven.I pressed back into the damp stone recess, pulling my dark mantle tighter around my throat. My hands were freezing, but my face burne

ANAThe heavy oak beams of the ceiling shuddered with every beat of the outer war-drums.Below the high stone arches of the eastern wing, the central courtyard of Ironfang was no longer a yard; it was a roaring furnace of iron, pine-pitch, and fear. Dusk had fallen hard over the valley, bringing with it a biting, black frost that froze the mud into razor-sharp ruts. Down in the pit of the yard, three hundred torches hissed in the freezing wind, throwing wild, lunging shadows across the granite walls. The clatter was deafening. Five hundred men-at-arms in heavy black-iron brigandines slammed their shields against the wooden mounting blocks. Wagons groaned under the weight of iron-tipped pikes, siege-flares, and salt-pork casks. Horses stabled in the lower arcades neighed frantically, their iron-shod hooves striking sparks off the frozen cobbles as grooms whipped them into the harness lines.Bram was sending the vanguard. Not at noon tomorrow, not after the scouts returned, but at the f

ANAThe silence inside the eastern wing bedchamber felt heavier than the mountain granite beneath our boots. The fire in the hearth had collapsed into a low bed of glowing maroon embers, casting dark, pulsing shadows across the timber rafters. Sena had retreated to the far corner near the washstand, her back pressed against the wall, her eyes wide and wet with unspilled tears.Rhydian stood three paces from me.The cold night air cut through the narrow arrow-slit window, carrying with it the faint, rhythmic thrum of the outer war-drums down in the courtyard. But inside the room, time seemed to freeze, bound tight by the suffocating weight of three years of lies coming undone at once.He didn't speak. He simply looked at me.His blue eyes—bloodshot at the rims, framed by dark bruises of exhaustion—scanned every inch of my face in the dim amber light of the embers. Without the passive screen of my mother’s blood-glamour to warp his sight, the truth was unyielding, razor-sharp, and absol

AZIZAThe dark leather of the ledger roll felt colder than river ice, yet it burned against my palms like a lit brand.Inside the narrow eastern wing chamber, the air was stifling, thick with the sharp tang of old lamp oil, cedar dust, and the dying ash of the hearth fire. Outside, the distant, rhythmic blare of the compound horns sounded like a wounded beast baying into the freezing night wind, calling the vanguard to form up at the lower timber-gate.I sat on the edge of the small wooden bench beneath the window, the heavy canvas sack discarded at my feet.Across my knees lay the true records—forty years of stolen territory, illegal pack absorptions, and forged land-charters. The sheepskin pages rasped under my trembling fingers. On the left side of the heavy ledger, written in a clear, precise indigo ink, was my father’s sweeping, meticulous hand. He had recorded every grain-tally, every timber-grant, and every bloodline count of the high valley with absolute, unyielding clarity.O
