Chapter 71: The Captain's oath

Serena's POV I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, and sleep would not come. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Alejandro in the arena. I saw Felipe's claws tearing into his side, saw the black blood pouring from the wound, and I saw Alejandro's knees buckle as he hit the ground. I saw him looking up at me, his golden eyes filled with pain and regret, and I heard his voice, weak and fading, telling me he was sorry. I pressed my palms against my eyes, trying to force the images away. But they would not leave. They clung to me like shadows, whispering that tomorrow would be the end of everything. I turned onto my side, and I pulled the blankets tighter around my shoulders, but the cold would not leave me. The fear was too deep, too sharp, and too real. I pushed myself out of bed, and I walked to the window, and I looked out at the snow. The courtyard was empty, and the world was qu

Chapter 72: The morning rites 1

Serena's POV I walked back to my room on legs that felt heavier than they had before. Diego's words echoed in my mind, like a quiet anchor in the storm of my thoughts. "I will protect both of you." I wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him. When I reached my door, I paused, and I pressed my palm against the wood. I could feel the cold seeping through, and I could feel the weight of the night pressing down on me. I pushed the door open, and I walked inside, and I closed it behind me. I did not sleep. I just lay in the darkness, staring at the ceiling, and I waited for the dawn. When it finally came, it brought no comfort, because I woke up before dawn, and the first thing I felt was fear. It was not the sharp, sudden fear of being chased or attacked. It was deeper than that, slower and more insidious, like a poison spreading through my veins. It was the

Chapter 73: The morning rites 2

Serena's POV I met her eyes in the mirror, and I saw the truth in them. She was not just saying words to comfort me, but she believed what she was saying. She had seen me survive things that would have broken most people, and she believed I would survive this too. But I wished I had her faith. "You really believe that?" I asked. Ramona's hands stilled, and her old brown eyes met mine. "I have watched you for months, Serena. I have seen you grow from a frightened girl into a woman who stands tall in the face of danger. I have seen you choose kindness when cruelty would have been easier. I have seen you fight for what you believe in. So yes, I believe it." I nodded, and I turned back to face the mirror. Ramona continued braiding my hair, her fingers moving with practiced precision. She wove the strands together, tight and neat,

Chapter 74: The walk to the Arena 1

Serena's POV The words echoed in my mind as I left the chapel behind. "I was not a sacrifice anymore. I was a queen." I let them settle into my chest, let them become part of me, let them give me strength. The walk to the arena was long, and the corridors were lined with nobles who watched me with cold eyes and calculating smiles. I did not look away from any of them. I kept my head high, and I let them see that I was not afraid. But inside, I was terrified. I thought about Alejandro, waiting somewhere in the castle, preparing for the fight of his life. I thought about the promise he had made me, and I thought about what I would do if he did not come back. I pushed the thought away, because I could not afford to think like that, and I kept walking. I walked through the castle halls with my head high and my footsteps steady, and the nobles lined the corridors

Chapter 75: The walk to the Arena 2

Serena's POV Mateo smiled, and it was the kind of smile that could light up the darkest room. "You saved me," he said. "So you have to be okay. You have to come back." I nodded and pulled him into a hug, that was quick and fierce. "I will," I said. "I promise." When I pulled back, Doña Beatriz was standing behind him, her dark blue eyes soft with something that looked like gratitude. She placed her hand on Mateo's shoulder, and she looked at me. "He insisted on seeing you," Doña Beatriz said. "He would not stop talking about it." I stood up, and I met her eyes. "Thank you," I said. "For letting him come." She nodded, and I saw the worry flickering behind her dark blue eyes. "Serena," she said, and her voice was quiet. "Whatever happens, just know that you are not alone. Remember that." I nodded. "I know. Thank you, Do&

Chapter 76: The Arena

Serena's POV The gates groaned open, and Felipe walked into the arena like he already owned it. The sound of the gates was loud and final, with a grinding of stone against stone that seemed to echo through the arena and settle into my bones. It was the sound of doors closing, of fate being sealed, and of a moment that could not be undone. Felipe was shirtless, and his skin was covered in scars, each one telling a story of battles won and enemies defeated. His dark hair was slicked back, and his smile was wide and sharp, and he moved with the confidence of a man who had never lost a fight he truly cared about. The crowd roared his name. "Felipe! Felipe! Felipe!" I watched him walk to the center of the sand, and I felt my hands curl into fists on my lap. He raised his arms, and the crowd roared louder, and I wanted to scream at them to stop. "Look at him," a no

Chapter 77: The First Blow

Serena's POV The referee's hand dropped, and the world exploded into motion. The stillness shattered like glass, and the tension that had been coiling in my chest snapped into something sharp and electric. I could feel the impact of that single motion through the bond, through the ground beneath my feet, and through the air that suddenly felt too thin to breathe. Felipe lunged forward, fast and aggressive, with his claws extended and his smile wide and sharp. He moved like a man who had been waiting for this moment his entire life, and like a predator who had finally cornered his prey. I felt my heart stop as he closed the distance between them. His claws caught Alejandro's cheek, and blood appeared, bright and red against his pale skin. The crowd gasped, and I heard someone scream, and I felt my hands curl into fists on my lap. My nails dug into my palms, an

Chapter 78: The Counter-attack

Serena's POV As I continue to watch the ongoing battle for life and death, I noticed the atmosphere shift. I saw it happen before I understood what I was watching. Alejandro's stance shifted. It was subtle, almost imperceptible, the kind of change that only someone who had been watching him for months would notice. His weight settled onto his back foot, and his shoulders relaxed, and his golden eyes sharpened into something I had never seen before. Felipe did not notice. He lunged forward again, wild and desperate, with his claws extended and his smile gone. He was no longer fighting with confidence, he was fighting with rage. And that was his mistake. I watched Felipe's face, and I saw the moment he realized he had made a fatal error. His confidence had been a shield, a mask he had worn for so long that he had forgotten it was not real.

Chapter 79: The cheat

Serena's POV As the fight raged on, Alejandro was winning. I watched him push Felipe back, step by step, blow by blow, and I felt the hope rising in my chest like a wave. The crowd was cheering for him, with their voices blending into a roar that seemed to shake the very walls of the arena. "He is going to win," I whispered. "He is actually going to win." Felipe stumbled backward, with his face pale and his eyes wide. He was losing, and everyone could see it. His movements were sloppy, and his attacks were wild and uncoordinated. He was no longer fighting with strategy, he was fighting with desperation. "The king is too strong," a voice said from the crowd. "Felipe cannot win." "Felipe made a mistake," another voice answered. "He underestimated the king." I leaned forward in my seat, and I felt the hope flooding my chest. "He is going to

Chapter 80: The scream

Serena's POV I was still screaming when I realized I was on my feet. I did not remember standing, and I did not remember pushing myself out of my seat. All I knew was that Alejandro was kneeling in the sand, bleeding black blood, and Felipe was standing over him with his silver claws still dripping. I tried to run to Alejandro in the arena. But hands grabbed me from behind, and arms wrapped around my waist, and I felt myself being pulled back. I struggled against them, kicking and thrashing, and trying to break free. "Let me go!" I screamed at the top of my voice. "Let me go!" "You cannot," a voice said. "You will die." I recognized the voice: It was captain Diego. I turned my head, and I saw his grey eyes, steady and unyielding. His grip was like iron, and no matter how hard I struggled, I could not break free.
