Crack after crack echoed through the open space of the apartment. My curiosity got the better of me, overriding the lingering weakness in my legs. After William’s phone call ended, he came back downstairs and forcefully grabbed my arm, dragging me up the stairs so we could both get dressed in clean clothes. Within ten minutes, we had left his ruined living room. For the first time since I had known him, William was the one driving us. His large hands clutched the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned a bloodless white, his jaw locked in a tight line. He had not looked at me a single time since we climbed into the black SUV. I kept my eyes fixed on the passenger window, monitoring our surroundings. At first, I assumed we were driving back into the city. But as the minutes ticked by, the denser the forest became, to the point where the thick canopy blocked out any form of light, plunging everything in darkness. Anxiety began to tighten in my chest as William abruptly swung the steering wheel, turning off into an unpaved dirt road.  

I woke with a gasp, my chest heaving and cold sweat running down my back. I blinked a few times as my vision slowly came into focus, revealing the high ceilings and familiar layout of William’s master bedroom at his pack house. I was back in his bed. Instinctively, I lifted my right hand to my mouth, running the pads of my fingers over the sharp points of my fangs.
