Kingdom to run

Margot I found her in the narrow corridor near the laundry rooms. She was carrying a stack of white towels, her head bent so low her chin almost touched her collar.I did not ask. I simply grabbed her upper arm and pulled her into the nearby supply room. The towels slipped from her hands, cluttering the floor. I shut the wooden door and stood right in front of it, blocking her only way out."What did I tell you?" I said, my voice quiet but sharp. She did not answer. She stood there, looking down at the scattered towels.I stepped closer, invading her space until she had to tilt her head back slightly to look at me. I pointed my index finger straight at the floor. "I told to You stay down here. In the dark. Where you belong."Then, I pressed my palm flat against her chest, pushing her back an inch. "And Do not try to stand tall. Make yourself smaller. If I see you in the main halls again, I will make sure Celia throws you out into the street."She still did not speak. I reached down a

Count Down

Margaux The wooden door of the supply room clicked shut. Margot was gone.I looked down at the floor. The white towels I had been carrying were scattered across the concrete. I stood still for exactly ten seconds, letting the silence of the room wash over me.Margot had made her threats. She had pressed her hand against my chest and gripped my wrist. But as I stood there in the quiet room, I realized something important.I was not afraid of her.I checked the feeling again, searching my mind the way a soldier checks their gear before a march. It was true. There was no fear in me. I was cautious, yes. I was strategic. I knew I had to be careful. But Margot did not scare me anymore. Five years ago, her anger would have made me cry. Now, it just felt like extra noise.I bent down, picked up the clean towels one by one, and shook the dust off them. I stacked them neatly back into the wicker basket. When I stepped back into the service corridor, the air was cool. I walked toward the laund

Two people

DorianI opened the blue folder for the third time that day. The name Mara stared back at me from the blank page.No last name. No middle name. Just five letters."You have been looking at that same page for two hours," Garrett said, walking into my study. He set a stack of printed security logs on the corner of my wooden desk."Look at this," I said, pointing at the paper. "She is registered as coming from an eastern village. But the person who vouched for her is from a pack in the southeast. Why would someone from the southeast care about a kitchen maid from the east?"Garrett pulled up a chair and sat down. "It could be a family connection. Maybe Celia knows the family.""Celia does not make mistakes like this," I said. "She has run this palace for thirty years. She knows every face that enters. But when I asked her about Mara yesterday, she did not look me in the eye. She looked at the floor.""Celia?" Garrett looked surprised. "She has been loyal to your family since we were chil

The Garden

I knelt on the damp grass near the stone wall, pulling my thin jacket tighter around my shoulders. I had a small metal trowel in my hand, and I began to dig into the soil to gather the roots the cook had asked for.As I worked, something shifted. It did not feel like an explosion. There was no sudden rush of heat or dramatic strength. It felt as if a heavy wooden door inside my mind, a door I did not even know was locked, had quietly moved open by one single inch.My wolf, which had been silent and flat for a while , slowly lifted its head.Suddenly, the cold air around me changed. It was no longer just cold. It was full of information. I could feel the distance between the trees. I could hear the faint, trickle of the water fountains three hundred yards away. I could smell the metal of the outer gates and the distant, cold stone of the mountains. All my life, living so close to Margot had thinned everything inside me. Her presence had always acted like a blanket, smothering my own na

Suspicions

I turned away from the garden entrance and walked straight to my study. The quiet sound of steps down the hall stayed in my mind, but I needed facts, not feelings. Garrett was already standing near my desk when I opened the door. He held a thin yellow folder in his hands. "The investigator just sent this through," Garrett said, setting the folder on the wooden desk. "He found a lead on the person who vouched for Mara." I sat down in my chair and pulled the paper toward me. "What did he find?" "It took some digging," Garrett said, pointing to the top line. "The person who asked Celia to sign those papers isn't from a small village. She is a low-ranking woman in the southeastern pack." I looked up at him. "The southeastern pack? That's Lucien Ashby's territory." "Yes," Garrett nodded. "It is also where Margaux Voss lived before she disappeared three years ago." I stared at the name on the page. Lucien Ashby ran the southeastern pack. He came to the capital every few months

Found her

Dorian I could not sleep, so I left my bedroom and walked down the quiet hallway toward my private study. As I turned the corner into the carpeted corridor, I saw her. She was walking quietly, holding a folded white sheet against her chest. She had not heard me coming yet. In that split second, before her eyes lifted to mine, my wolf moved. It did not ask for permission. It surged forward with absolute certainty, recognizing her completely. Before my mind could talk me out of it, I stepped into her path. I moved slowly, keeping my hands where she could see them so I would not startle her. I reached out and gently took the heavy sheet from her hands, setting it down on the wooden bench beside us. "Wait," I said softly. She froze under my touch, but she did not pull away. Her body went completely still, the kind of stillness that comes when someone has already decided not to run. I placed one hand against the side of her neck, my fingers sliding under her uniform collar. R

Right to lie in my face

DorianI stood in the dark hallway for a long time after her steps faded down the stairs. My hands hung flat at my sides. For four months, I had sat across from Margot at dinner tables, listening to her talk about our future. Her words were always polite, and her smile was always ready, but the connection between us was always flat. It played like a bad song that was almost right, but just off enough to annoy you. It was close enough to fool my eyes, but it never fooled my wolf. What had just happened in this corridor was completely different. Touch for touch, scent for scent, it was the exact same feeling from the night of Isabella Calloway’s wedding at the Calloway estate.Footsteps sounded down the hall. Garrett walked around the corner carrying a stack of papers. He stopped when he saw me standing near the wooden bench."Sire?" Garrett asked, looking around the empty hall. "What are you doing out here? I thought you were in your study.""I was on my way there," I said. My voice wa

Self doubt

Margaux I sat on the edge of my narrow bed with both hands pressed flat over the side of my neck. Under my fingers, the mark pulsed with a deep, steady warmth. It was quiet now, completely satisfied after months of being starved, but the rest of my mind was a mess.I looked down at my muddy shoes resting on the small rug. I could not lie to myself about what had just happened in that hallway. For three years in Ashmere, I had survived by making cold, careful choices. I had learned to think five steps ahead of everyone else. But ten minutes ago, in the dark corridor outside his study, I had let the darkness, his closeness, and the pull of the bond push all my common sense aside. The result was sitting right here in this small room. My mark was no longer cold. My wolf was no longer wild or pacing in my head. It was lying down, happy and full, while my real situation had become ten times more dangerous than it was yesterday. The door of my room creaked open an inch.I pulled my hands do

Four men in dark suit

Lucien I sat in my beat-up car in the parking lot behind the regional pack office, staring at the message on my cracked phone screen.Margot’s text was brief, sharp, and structured like an order. She needed me at the palace immediately. She wanted me to go straight to the kitchen wing, make a scene near Margaux, and make it look like I had chased her there. She wanted the Lycan King to see us together—to see a rejected mate from a small southeastern pack claiming her before the King could figure out what the bond meant.I read the text twice. A familiar, bitter embarrassment burned in my stomach. For three years, Margot had used me as a stepping stone. She had taken every spare cent I earned from my low-level pack council job, used my connections to get her fancy clothes and introductions to wealthy pack leaders, and then walked away the second she didn't need me anymore. Now, she was under pressure at the palace, and she was using me again like a tool in her kit.I put the phone dow

Dorian

Margaux Celia’s message took two whole days to arrive on my burner phone. When the screen finally lit up in the middle of the night, I opened it with cold fingers.Three more weeks.I stared at the three words on the small screen for a long time before deleting the text. Three weeks felt like a lifetime in a palace where the King was watching every hallway and Margot was looking for any reason to destroy me. But I had survived three years alone in Ashmere, hiding in plain sight without a single person to help me. I could manage three weeks.I slipped the phone back under my mattress, pulled my uniform collar up, and got out of bed to start my morning shift. In the kitchen prep room, the air was warm and smelled of fresh bread and vegetable soup. Cherry, a young human girl with bright eyes and red hair who worked the morning shift with me, was busy scrubbing carrots at the metal sink."You're up early, Mara," Cherry said, turning around and wiping her wet hands on her apron. "I though
