The kiln had cooled to a dull, sullen red by dawn, but the womb inside was still singing—a high, thin note that vibrated through the ceramic walls when I tapped them with my fingernail. I had fired it for sixteen hours, until the clay had transmuted into porcelain, glass-hard and resonant, the color of old bone.It was perfect. And it was doomed.I carried it to the workbench, cradling it in both hands like the relic it was. Then I picked up the hammer. It was a jeweler's tool, small, precise, with a head of polished steel. I had bought it in a hardware store in Sorrento, paying cash, giving no name. I weighed it in my palm, feeling the balance, the potential energy coiled in its compact mass.I struck. The sound was not a shatter, not a crash, but a chime—a crystalline, bell-like tone as the porcelain surrendered its integrity. The vessel split along the stress lines I had engineered into its walls, opening like a flower forced into bloom by violence. Five pieces. Sharp as scalpels, w

I did not sleep. The doctor's warnings had settled into my bones like a cold sediment, a geology of fear stratifying beneath my skin. I lay on the narrow bed in the villa I had rented above the ceramic workshop, my hand resting on the flat of my stomach, counting the seconds between breaths, trying to detect a second pulse beneath my own.The Mediterranean storm came at three in the morning. Not the gentle rain of the day before, but a fury—a hammering of water against the terracotta roof, a wind that screamed through the cypress trees like a chorus of dying women. I rose and went to the window, watching the lightning split the sky over the sea, illuminating the cliff face in strobe-like flashes. And there, in the flash—there.A silhouette. Standing on the outcropping of rock below the clinic, where the path sheered away into the void. A man. Tall. The rain plastered his coat against his frame, darkening the fabric to the color of old blood. His head was bowed, his face invisible, but

By the time the documents arrived, Maria had already entered, her footsteps hesitant against the terracotta tiles."Signora," she whispered, holding out a slim envelope. "From New York. Marked urgent."I wiped my hands on the linen apron. The cut in my palm had healed to a pale crescent, a moon-shaped scar that would not fade. I took the envelope. It was heavy, expensive stock, the kind used for death announcements or wedding invitations—those formalities that bracket a life.I slit it open. Two papers slid out, landing side by side on the workbench like playing cards dealt by a drunk god.The first was a Certificate of Stillbirth. State of New York. Name of Fetus: Marconi, Male. Gestational Age: 20 weeks. Cause of Death: Trisomy 18, Edward's Syndrome, incompatible with extrauterine life. Father: Julian V. Marconi. Mother: Gia Carbone. The second was a Petition for Guardianship of Trust Assets. Filed by Julian V. Marconi, as Trustee of the Serena Cole Irrevocable Trust. Motion: To appo

The call came at four in the morning, a time when the line between waking and nightmare dissolves into gray static. I was sitting on the terrace of the Positano villa, wrapped in a shawl the color of dried blood, watching the fishing boats depart with their lanterns—small orange sparks against the pre-dawn dark. The ceramic vessels were gone, shipped to a gallery in Geneva where they would be displayed behind bulletproof glass, untouchable, sterilized by their own fame.My phone vibrated. Not Maria this time, but a number from New York that I did not recognize—a landline, the prefix indicating a hospital in the Financial District, some private clinic where the wealthy went to mend their broken wings.I answered."Signora Cole?" A man's voice, young, exhausted, the timbre of someone who had been repeating the same words for hours. "This is Dr. Henley from New York-Presbyterian. You are listed as the emergency contact for Julian V. Marconi."I said nothing. The fishing boats below seemed

Three years later. The Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland. The cabin stood at the edge of the ice tongue, a structure of black timber and glass that seemed to grow from the volcanic stone rather than sit upon it. Inside, the kiln was different here—electric, silent, lacking the dragon's roar of wood fire, but it served the same purpose. It transformed mud into permanence.I had not made a vessel for death in two years. No tombs, no wombs, no sealed cylinders of ash. I made bowls for the local fishermen, mugs for the scientists at the research station, simple, utilitarian things that held tea and soup and the ordinary warmth of survival. I was Serena Cole here, entirely. The passport had been renewed, the name legalized, the fingerprints smoothed by time and cold until even I could barely remember the whorls that had once unlocked the Marconi estate. The letter arrived with the supply plane, dropped in a waterproof pouch onto the gravel airstrip. It was from New York—from Castellano, or what
