Logan’s POVI did not answer her immediately. The question lingered heavily between us while the kitchen lights reflected softly against the marble counters. What happens when this year ends? I should have had an answer by now.The contract had been my idea from the start. Three hundred and sixty-five days that would be clean, simple, and controlled. At least that was what I thought back then. Now? Nothing about Audrey felt controlled anymore.I looked at her carefully. She stood across from me wearing one of my shirts, her makeup washed off after the party, her hair slightly messy from exhaustion. There was frosting on the sleeve she had somehow missed cleaning and somehow, she had never looked more beautiful.“Audrey, we still have time,” I started carefully and her expression shifted instantly.“That’s not really an answer,” she muttered. It wasn’t an answer, but the truth was worse, because lately, every time I imagined the contract ending, I felt something ugly inside my chest.

Logan’s POVI knew something was wrong the second I walked into the room.Audrey was pale, Ryan looked furious and neither of them were speaking. That combination never led to anything good."What happened?"I asked, as I closed the office door behind me.Neither answered immediately and my stomach tightened, then Audrey silently handed me her phone.I looked down to see one message and a photograph. Just like that, my mood disappeared.A cold anger settled inside me…The kind that never ended well for anyone. The photo showed Nia leaving school yesterday. There was nothing technically threatening about it.There was no weapon, no demand, no obvious danger. Just a picture and a sentence that said “Our daughter is getting so big.”I stared at it for several long seconds, then again, then a third time because I wanted to make sure I wasn't imagining the fury building inside me."What time did this arrive?" I asked. My voice sounded dangerously calm and Ryan answered first."About two minu

Audrey’s POVI stared at Logan. For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him."My birth certificate?" I asked and Logan nodded. The car continued moving through downtown Los Angeles, but suddenly everything felt distant. It felt muted and unreal."Why would you ask me that?" I asked."I just want an answer,” he said, as his jaw tightened.I frowned. The question seemed ridiculous. Who thought about their birth certificate? Who randomly checked things like that?"I don't know," I admitted."I've never really looked at it,” I added.Logan's expression didn't change. Neither did the uneasy feeling growing in my stomach."Have your parents ever shown it to you?" He asked."No,” I replied. The answer came faster this time, because the more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. The people who raised me, never showed me.They had never talked about things like that. Not birthdays, not childhood stories, not family history…Nothing.Growing up, I had always assumed they simply w

Audrey’s POVThe entire day felt strange. No matter how hard I tried to focus on work, my thoughts kept circling back to the same thing. It kept circling back to the dinner I was going to have with John Hargrove, the thing about the DNA results, the Important news, and all.None of it made sense, and the more I thought about it, the less I liked it.By lunchtime, I had reread the same email three times without processing a single word."Okay,” Kimmie's voice snapped me back to reality.I looked up. She was standing in front of my desk with her arms crossed."What's wrong?" She asked."Nothing,” I muttered. She stared at me for a while and I stared back. Neither of us moved, but she sighed finally."You're a terrible liar,” she said."Am not,” I argued, as I laughed despite myself."Audrey,” she called."Fine. My day is weird.” I murmured, as I leaned back in my chair."That's not specific,” she said.I debated telling her. Eventually I settled for a watered-down version."John Hargrov

Audrey's POVThe world stopped. I stared at John, then at Elena, then at Logan. Nobody moved, nobody spoke. The words continued echoing inside my head. “We believe you're our daughter.”It was ridiculous. It felt impossible and insane. And yet… Nobody in this room looked like they were joking.Elena was crying. John looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff.Logan looked worried, worried about me. I couldn't breathe.A nervous laugh escaped me, then another. Soon I was shaking my head."No,” I muttered and nobody interrupted."No,” I muttered again.I laughed again. The sound cracked halfway through."This is crazy,” I said and still nobody spoke."Tell them,” I said, as I looked at Logan."Audrey—" he called, as his jaw tightened."Tell them,” I said again. The room blurred slightly and my pulse thundered in my ears."Tell them this is some misunderstanding,” I said.Logan looked away and somehow that hurt more than anything else, because Logan never looked away. Not when thi
