I was on the floor scraping dried candle wax off the hardwood, trying not to let my frustration end up damaging the finish. Sylas was still in jail. I was still feeling helpless and angry. Christina and Darla were over helping me clean up but the house was quiet. I didn’t have anything to talk about that didn’t end up making me cry or yell. So, I just didn’t talk. All I wanted was for Sylas to come home.“I know you don’t want to come stay with us,” Darla said as she set a sandwich on the coffee table next to me. They’d been trying to get me to eat for two days. “So, why don’t we come stay with you here?”“Sylas will be home soon,” I said.“We know, Sawyer,” Christina said with a sigh. “We’re not trying to imply otherwise. But we know that he has some obstacles to get through and it could be a few more days before that happens. We’re not okay with leaving you here alone.”I let out a long breath, tossing the scrapper aside. “Alright, I get it,” I conceded. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m stil

We spent a few more hours in bed when we got home, at least until we needed to pry ourselves up for some sustenance. I knew we had a lot to talk about, but it was nice just being together again. Still, as we moved around the kitchen making something to eat, a subtle tension grew in the air.“Was it terrible…?” I asked quietly. “Being stuck in there…?”“It wasn’t comfortable,” Sylas said casually. “But I’ve spent longer stretches in worse places. My first apartment here in Cofield comes to mind. Boy, was that place a dump.”“I’m being serious, Sylas,” I said.“So am I,” he said. “The whole building was a deathtrap. Moldy, decaying, in a terrible neighborhood. After I made my first million, I bought the place and tore it down. There’s a dog park there now.”“Sylas… we need to talk about this,” I insisted. “I feel terrible ab…”“I told you, Sawyer. This wasn’t your fault,” Sylas stated. “This is why I didn’t want Carla to tell you about your mother’s involvement. She pitched a fit, Sawye

“I wish I could say the same,” I told Antoni as I pulled at my shirt cuffs. “Your message was… compelling, to be sure. But I can’t say I’d rather be in this meeting than home.”“No, I wouldn’t think so,” Antoni replied. “She is something special to go home to.”“Let’s get this over with. What is this about, Athenilis?” I demanded stiffly.“Business, Mr. Drakos,” Antoni replied. “This is about business.”“Alright. Since you’ve gone through so much trouble to get my attention, I’ll hear you out,” I said, hiding my frustration.“As you know, our business with Charles has been disrupted,” Antoni stated. “While I’m not particularly disappointed to be rid of the attachment, my father was very much looking forward to the enterprise we were attempting to start.”“Manufacturing you own computer chips,” I added. “I presume to expand your weapons inventory. Drones, smart bombs, that sort of thing.”Antoni’s plain expression cracked for a moment as he looked me.“Impressive,” he replied. “I didn’

I sat in our old booth nursing a stiff drink as I waited for Rick to arrive. It may or may not have been my third drink. But I don’t think anyone would have begrudged me the indulgence considering the circumstances. I was taking another drag when Rick slid into the booth across from me.“You’ve really gotten yourself in trouble this time,” he said, waving to the waitress to bring him the same as I was drinking.“You have no idea,” I told him.I filled him in on my conversation with Eric and my encounters with Antoni Athenilis. Needless to say, he was more shocked about one over the other. As expected, neither situation set well with him.“Well, fuck,” he said after downing he own drink. “This is bad, Sy. Really bad.”“We’ve had worse,” I commented.“No the fuck we haven’t,” he insisted. “The closest we’ve come is when you hustled that loan shark in poker. If you hadn’t let him at least win his club back, we would have ended up in a grave then.”“Maybe, but we made enough to save the c

“Good morning, Andrea,” I greeted an hour later as I climbed into the back of the town car Andre had driven to pick me up. “How are you this fine morning?”Andre gave me a smile through the rearview mirror. “Good morning, Ms. Hopkins,” he replied. “I’m ready to start the day.”I was scheduled to meet Dante at the lab this morning, while Sylas would be at the office. I would be meeting with the research teams that would be taking on the EPA projects. So, I didn’t have to be at the main office until this afternoon. I hoped that meant we wouldn’t be confronted with any of the drama Sylas had warned me about but we would have to see.“It will potentially be an eventful one,” I told him. “I hope you’re prepared for that. And please, call me Sawyer.”“Sylas has fully informed me of the situation,” he said as he pulled onto the street. “You’re in good hands.”“Do you have a lot of experience with fighting the press?” I asked him.“Oh yes,” he replied. “I used to protect some of the younger D
