Chapter 41: Midnight Fever

- RAVENAThe iron alarm bell on the administrative spire clanged three fast times, stopped, and struck again."Get up, Zave! Move!" Ashton yelled, slapping the side of my cot so hard the wood groaned. He was already fully dressed in his blue healer tunic, frantically stuffing glass vials of blue frost-leaf serum into his leather satchel.I bolted upright, my hand flying under my pillow before my eyes were even fully open. "What's going on? Is it a raid?""It's the Alpha Roderic," Ashton panted, his spectacles sliding halfway down his nose. "His core temperature just spiked past four hundred degrees. The thermal monitors in his quarters are melting the copper wires. Franz summoned every medical assistant on duty." Franz Davis was the academy's Chief Medical Officer, a dry, muscular werewolf who ran the infirmary like a battle ward and didn't tolerate panic."Shit," I muttered, swinging my legs off the mattress and hauling my oversized grey coat over my shoulders. We sprinted through t

Chapter 42: The Anchor

- RODERICMy chest felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water straight over an open furnace. The violent, sickening roar that usually tore through my ribs during a core surge was gone. Dead quiet. The air in the courtyard was still thick with the stench of my burned coat, but the fire under my skin wasn't burning anymore. It was humming in a smooth, steady, golden pulse that felt so absurdly calm it made my head spin. And it was all coming from the skinny, slouching kid standing right between my knees.I didn't let go of his wrist. I couldn't. His fingers were small, completely wrapped around my bare forearm, and I could feel his pulse pounding beneath my thumb."What are you?" I rasped, my voice sounding rougher than grinding iron. "Who the hell are you, Zavier?"Zavier didn't answer right away. He breathed hard, his dark hood slipping back off his head and exposing a pale forehead slick with sweat. His large, watery dark eyes stared back down into mine, wide with fear and

Chapter 43: The Healer's Eye

- RAVENAThe heavy iron door swung open with a deafening screech, slamming against the stone wall."Alpha! Stay back!" Ashton yelled, bursting into the courtyard with a leather satchel slung across his chest and a glowing glass cylinder in his hand. Franz was right behind him, holding a massive iron heat-shield up like a wall. Then both of them froze dead in their tracks. The roaring wildfire was gone. The stone flagstones no longer glowed orange. The thick white steam had cleared, leaving only crisp, freezing mountain night air circulating through the open archway.Roderic was sitting in his wheelchair, completely calm, his bare chest slowly rising and falling. His coat was still a pile of black cinders on the floor, but his skin looked completely normal. No smoke or glowing red veins, nothing.I was standing six feet away, leaning against a cold granite pillar, my hands shoved deep into my coat pockets, pulling my hood so low it practically covered my nose. I was breathing hard, my

Chapter 44: The Random Check

- RAVENA"Zave, you must hurry!" Ashton hissed, slamming our locker door shut so fast the iron latch rattled like a loose tooth. "She's in the east wing right now."I almost dropped my wooden practice broadsword. "Who?""Thessaly," he whispered, shooting a paranoid glance down the crowded armory corridor. Recruits were shoving past us, laughing, strapping on heavy leather chest-guards for third-period tactical drills, but Ashton looked like he was about to vomit his breakfast. "She's doing a 'random sanitation audit' of the fourth-floor dorms. She's got two senior wardens with her, Zave. They're literally tearing rooms apart."My stomach dropped straight into my boots."My trunk," I rasped, my voice cracking before I remembered to drop it down into Zavier's low, rough tone. "I left my kit bag under the floorboard behind the radiator.""What's in it?" Ashton demanded, grabbing my elbow and dragging me behind a stack of wooden sparring shields. "Tell me it's just illegal dice or cheap

Chapter 45: Duels at Midnight

- RODERIC"I asked you a question, boy," Thessaly purred, taking a slow step toward Zavier, holding that ragged scrap of scorched silk in front of his face. "Where did a stray get noble-grade Valecrest weave?""I told you," Zavier rasped, his back pressed against the cold stone, his thumb twitching near the lip of his boot. "Found it in the dirt near the river.""You're a terrible liar," she sneered, her hand raising to signal the two wardens posted outside the door."It's mine."I pushed my wheelchair past the heavy doorframe, stopping dead on the threshold. My coat was buttoned to the collar, my hands resting on the iron wheels. Franz and two guard captains hovered behind me. My jaw was set so tight my teeth ached.Thessaly froze, her hand dropping back to her side. "Headmaster. I am conducting an administrative sanitation audit of Room 404...""I don't give a damn what you're doing, Thessaly," I interrupted, rolling my chair straight into the trashed room. I pulled up right beside

Chapter 46: The Locked Office

- RAVENA The post-duel chaos in the main courtyard was absolute perfection. Half the arena was still screaming about Konner getting stripped of his weapon, while the other half was placing stupid bets on the next bracket.I didn't stick around to collect high-fives. I grabbed my burlap kit, slipped past the rowdy crowd near the weapon racks, and ducked straight into the upper spire stairwell."Zave! Where are you going?" Ashton shouted after me, wiping dirt off his blue healer tunic. "Franz wants everyone in the mess hall for the post-trial debrief!""Stomach's turning!" I rasped over my shoulder, keeping my voice deep and gravelly. "Gotta drop a load!""Gross, dude! Thanks for the detail!"I didn't hesitate. I took the stairs two at a time, my heavy boots thudding against the damp granite steps until the noise of the arena faded into a dull, muffled hum below.Roderic’s private office sat at the very top of the central tower. Heavy, dark ironwood doors, no windows in the landing, an

Chapter 47: Interrogation

- RAVENAMy fingers twitched over the edge of the leather binder. My brain was throwing out a thousand panic signals at once, every single one screaming at me to shove the heavy desk into his lap and jump out the three-story window.Instead, I locked my knees, dug my nails into my palms, and forced my shoulders to drop into that sloppy, unbothered slouch I’d spent months perfecting."I don't know what you're talking about, Chief," I said casually, ditching the fake scratchy voice and letting my real fake-boy tone slip out. "Can't a guy look for a quick payday without getting put on trial?"Roderic didn't blink. He just sat there in his wheelchair, his broad chest rising and falling in slow, steady breaths, those sharp, dark eyes tracking every tiny twitch of my facial muscles."A payday," he repeated flatly. It wasn't a question."Yeah. A payday." I shoved my hands into my trousers' pockets, leaning my hip against the mahogany desk like I owned the place. "You know how much the region

Chapter 48: The Suncrest Trap

- RAVENAThe wind coming off the northern peaks felt like a slap across the face with a wet rag."Stay in your paired lines!" Instructor Franz barked, his voice barely carrying over the howling gale. He was wrapped in three layers of boiled leather, pacing along the rim of the upper ravine. "This isn't a walk in the garden! You drop your safety line out here, you don't break an ankle, but you freeze to death before the bell rings!"The wilderness survival trial was complete bullshit. The academy called it "environmental adaptation," but really it was just throwing forty recruits onto a slick, frozen mountain pass behind the spire and seeing who cried first.I hauled my heavy hemp rope over my shoulder, letting my boots dig into the packed ice. My toes were completely numb inside my oversized leather boots, and my fingers felt like stiff twigs under my thin gloves."Zave, wait up!" Ashton yelled, stumbling through a snowdrift three yards behind me. He was wearing two scarves wrapped so

Chapter 49: Skin on Skin

- RODERIC"Hold the anchor line, you damn fools!" I roared over the gale, my fingers inside the gloves already numb as I gripped the rim of the ice ledge."Alpha, back off!" Franz screamed through the blinding whiteout, tugging hard at my leather harness. "The shelf is collapsing! You can't lean out that far!""Shut up and hold my chair!"Down in the dark, blue-black throat of the fissure, Zavier’s fingers slipped off the iron piton.I didn't think. I didn't care about my useless legs or the sub-zero wind burning my thr

Chapter 50: Unspoken Shift

- RAVENAThe thick and heavy golden heat hummed beneath my skin, like liquid sun pouring through my veins. It was terrifying.Outside, the storm roared against the ice wall, a hollow, ravenous howl that made the small cave shudder. Inside, the quiet was so thick I could hear the slow, rhythmic rise and fall of Roderic’s chest under my cheek.I couldn't move. I literally couldn't force my muscle memory to kick in.His massive arms were still wrapped tight around my back, pinning me against his muscular, bare chest under that heavy wolf-skin cloak. The weight of him, the solid, unyielding stone of his torso, was suffocating. My cheek was pressed right against his collarbone, smelling burnt cedar, leather, and that intense, clean scent that belonged entirely to him.And then I felt it.A sudden, hard shift beneath his pants and tunic. A sharp, unmistakable pressure pressing right against my hip.My whole body went rigid. Every single nerve ending in my spine flared up. My throat seized,
