I lunged toward Principal Newman like someone grasping at a lifeline. "Principal Newman, call 911! A child's been hit, and he's still alive!"Principal Newman's gaze fell on the child lying on the ground, his expression shifting. "Don't panic. Let me take a look."He turned and said something to a teacher, who nodded and hurried off.I pressed urgently. "Did you call 911?"Principal Newman didn't answer. Instead, he looked at Owen. "Are you the child's father?"Owen shook his head and pointed at me. "He's the father. I'm his friend. I hit the kid by accident."Principal Newman nodded, then turned to me. "Don't panic yet. I've already sent for our school nurse. Let's have him assess the situation first."I froze. "The school nurse? You're not calling an ambulance?""Even if we call one, we'll have to wait. It's better to have the nurse check on him first. Don't worry, our nurse is very experienced."Something felt wrong, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Within minutes, a mid

I clenched my fists. "That's impossible! My mother's home with him. He couldn't have come!"Owen laughed mockingly. "Then call and ask. That'll settle it, won't it?"He held out the phone to me. I stared at his face, suddenly uneasy.I took the phone, my hand shaking as I dialed. After a few rings, someone picked up."Hello? Quinn?"I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. "Mom, is Elliot with you?""Elliot?" My mother paused. "Elliot went to school."My head spun. "He had a fever. I thought he wasn't going?""His fever broke this morning. He insisted on going and said that he'd made plans with his friends." She sounded so casual. "I dropped him off at the gate myself. Why? What's wrong?"I opened my mouth, but my throat felt blocked."Hello? Quinn? What happened?" She was still talking, but I couldn't hear her anymore. The phone slipped from my hand and hit the ground with a sharp crack. I turned slowly, staring at the small body on the ground. That blue hoodi

Owen had no response.I continued. "I just bought that car. It cost 300 thousand dollars. Now the front end is totaled, and repairs will cost at least 50 thousand. You're paying.""50 thousand?" Owen shrieked. "Are you trying to rob me?""Then wait for the dealership's quote. You'll pay whatever the bill says. I won't ask for a cent more.""I don't have that kind of money!" He started playing the victim, his eyes reddening. "I just got my license. I don't even have a job. Where am I supposed to get money? You're trying to ruin me!"I laughed. "A minute ago, you were offering 50 thousand to settle things. Now you can't afford it?"His expression shifted several times. He stammered but couldn't form words.Principal Newman quickly stepped in. "How about this? Let's set the car issue aside for now. We can discuss it after we handle the child's situation—""No." I cut him off, my tone firm."This gets settled today. The kid being fine is one thing. The car being wrecked is another

Owen covered his ears and crouched on the ground, shaking his head frantically. An officer moved forward to help him up. Owen shoved him away hard, then lifted his head, tears streaming down his face."Officer, I'm begging you, please help me find my son! He has to be somewhere in the kindergarten! I specifically told him not to leave the classroom. What's going on here?"A young teacher nearby spoke up hesitantly. "I… I remember Liam was wearing that blue hoodie this afternoon."She pulled out her phone and scrolled to a photo. "I just remembered that we took a class photo this afternoon. Look."Owen took the phone. In the picture, Liam stood in the front row, smiling at the camera. He was wearing that blue hoodie. Around his neck hung a small gold chain.Owen had put it on him the day he was born. Liam had never taken it off.Owen stared at the photo. All the life seemed to drain out of him.
