Chapter 8

作者: Zara Dawn
Owen covered his ears and crouched on the ground, shaking his head frantically.

An officer moved forward to help him up. Owen shoved him away hard, then lifted his head, tears streaming down his face.

"Officer, I'm begging you, please help me find my son! He has to be somewhere in the kindergarten! I specifically told him not to leave the classroom. What's going on here?"

A young teacher nearby spoke up hesitantly. "I… I remember Liam was wearing that blue hoodie this afternoon."

Owen froze. "He was mean to you?"Elliot nodded.Tears streamed down Owen's face as he whispered, "This is fate."The police took him away. They also took Principal Newman and the school nurse in for questioning.I stood at the kindergarten entrance with Elliot in my arms, watching the police car disappear into the distance.Three months later, Owen's case went to trial, and I attended the hearing. In the courtroom, he stood in the defendant's box, looking so gaunt that he was barely recognizable. Half his hair had gone white. His eyes were hollow. The prosecutor charged him with intentional homicide. The evidence was overwhelming.Owen's lawyer argued that he'd only meant to teach me a lesson, not actually kill anyone. It was a case of mistaken identity. The prosecutor stood, his voice firm and resonant. "He intended to kill an innocent child. That's intentional homicide. Mistaken identity doesn't change the charge. What's more, that child was his own biological son!"The co

"I… I remember Liam was wearing that blue hoodie this afternoon."She pulled out her phone and scrolled to a photo. "I just remembered that we took a class photo this afternoon. Look."Owen took the phone. In the picture, Liam stood in the front row, smiling at the camera. He was wearing that blue hoodie. Around his neck hung a small gold chain.Owen had put it on him the day he was born. Liam had never taken it off.Owen stared at the photo. All the life seemed to drain out of him. The phone slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a crack.Slowly, he turned t

"Why should we forget it?" I stared at Principal Newman."That's not what you said when you were stopping me from calling 911 earlier."Principal Newman had no comeback. Owen looked like he wanted to say something else, but I was done wasting my breath on him.I pulled out my phone and dialed 911 right in front of him. "Hello, 911? I need to report an incident."Owen lunged for my phone. I dodged to the side."Are you insane? Why are you calling the police?"I ignored him and spoke into the phone. "This is Sunshine Kindergarten. There's been a car accident with injuries. We need officers here."I hung up and looked at Owen. "You wanted to be reasonable, right? Let the police sort it out."Less than ten minutes later, a patrol car pulled up.Two officers walked in. When they saw the child on the ground, their expressions hardened."What happened here?"Principal Newman's face went pale. He hurried forward. "Officers, this is just a misunderstanding. We're handling it.""Ther

Owen had no response.I continued. "I just bought that car. It cost 300 thousand dollars. Now the front end is totaled, and repairs will cost at least 50 thousand. You're paying.""50 thousand?" Owen shrieked. "Are you trying to rob me?""Then wait for the dealership's quote. You'll pay whatever the bill says. I won't ask for a cent more.""I don't have that kind of money!" He started playing the victim, his eyes reddening. "I just got my license. I don't even have a job. Where am I supposed to get money? You're trying to ruin me!"I laughed. "A minute ago, you were offering 50 thousand to settle things. Now you can't afford it?"His expression shifted several times. He stammered but couldn't form words.Principal Newman quickly stepped in. "How about this? Let's set the car issue aside for now. We can discuss it after we handle the child's situation—""No." I cut him off, my tone firm."This gets settled today. The kid being fine is one thing. The car being wrecked is another

Everyone froze. Their eyes darted between me and Elliot.Owen looked like he'd seen a ghost as he stared at Elliot in the doorway with trembling lips."Dad," Elliot called out again and ran toward me.I crouched down and pulled his warm, soft little body into my arms. I could feel his heartbeat, his breathing. He was alive. My son was alive and well.Tears streamed down my face. I held him tight, terrified that if I let go, he'd disappear."Why are you crying, Dad?"Elliot looked scared. His small hands clumsily wiped at my tears. "Don't cry, Dad. I'm being good."I held him close for a long moment before I could pull myself together.Owen suddenly charged over and pointed at Elliot, his voice shrill. "That's impossible! He was hit! I saw it with my own eyes!"Elliot shrank into my arms, trembling all over.I shielded him and stood up, staring coldly at Owen. "What exactly did you see?""I saw him wearing that blue hoodie! I saw him get hit!""Then who's that?"I pointed

I clenched my fists. "That's impossible! My mother's home with him. He couldn't have come!"Owen laughed mockingly. "Then call and ask. That'll settle it, won't it?"He held out the phone to me. I stared at his face, suddenly uneasy.I took the phone, my hand shaking as I dialed. After a few rings, someone picked up."Hello? Quinn?"I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice steady. "Mom, is Elliot with you?""Elliot?" My mother paused. "Elliot went to school."My head spun. "He had a fever. I thought he wasn't going?""His fever broke this morning. He insisted on going and said that he'd made plans with his friends." She sounded so casual. "I dropped him off at the gate myself. Why? What's wrong?"I opened my mouth, but my throat felt blocked."Hello? Quinn? What happened?" She was still talking, but I couldn't hear her anymore. The phone slipped from my hand and hit the ground with a sharp crack. I turned slowly, staring at the small body on the ground. That blue hoodi
