Chapter 31: Alexandra

The room was filled with an awkward tension the second Alpha Damarus and Marcus walked out. Almost like he'd heard Marcus's parting threat, Lucien had been smart enough to stay away from me. That didn't stop him from running his mouth though. "Do you really think playing the good mate will keep you safe? Marcus is fooling all of you. I know he's behind all of this. And you have to know it too." His words felt like poison. I kept my expression neutral and unchanged, staring at him. "No, I don't know. I have no doubt in my mate either. He is not behind this. You did not see the things we saw and that is why you think you can utter such nonsense." His eyebrows drew down further, jaw clenched. "I don't buy into this story you're both trying to tell, even if my father does. He'll listen to me though, and once I can convince him that you and your demon mate are the ones behind the deaths, he'll banish you and I will get what was rightfully mine." My lips curved up into a smirk as a

Chapter 32: Alexandra

You are both going to swear to keep each other's secrets. And to keep none from each other. Alpha Damarus declares. "In the lake, the goddess herself will hear this oath. She knows your true intention, so if you lie, or do not mean your words, the oath is void."I gulped, nodding attentively."Get into the lake from opposite ends. Say your vows as you walk to each other. For this to work you must meet each other in the lake."Marcus nudged me. Smiling wide. He still looked pale, though much better than before, but shaken up too. Scared even.Where had they gone to before coming back to get me?"Let's do this, Alexandra. Once this is done, no one will ever question your claim to the throne again." His words, even if he didn't know it, were the only source of encouragement I had."Typically both your parents should be here, but in the absence of yours and the death of my mate, I will stand as a witness to the bond." Alpha Damarus spoke, wincing right after. His words hurt both him and m

Chapter 33: Marcus

Chaos had already erupted before we got there. Our arrival only seemed to add to the panic, though, as the pack members rushed forward, gesturing frantically towards one of the main farm lands."The crops, it's all destroyed. What do we do? Winter is almost here and the stores are yet to be filled." A man spoke, his voice shaky despite his best attempt to be calm.I turned my attention to him, since he seemed to be the only one in the crowd level-headed enough to keep calm. "What happened?""We were just about to head back into town after working here all day. Then one of the shovel boys noticed some of the cabbages had turned black.""Black?"He nodded, eyes still wide in shock. "I've never seen anything like this. First our people are dying, and now the crops. What's going on, alpha?"My gaze shifted to the direction he'd pointed at, causing me to frown. "Show me."My father kept speaking to the rest, trying to calm them down. The man led me towards one of the farms, unlocking the g

Chapter e4: Alexandra

Marcus remained silent for the rest of the night, not even touching me when we went to bed.The bedroom door slamming shut dragged me from sleep, my body up and alert from fear.Marcus didn't move though. He slapped a palm over his face, groaning. "What do you want, Haeleyna?"Sure enough, as the sleep left my eyes allowing them to focus, Haeleyna came clearly into view, staring down at us with a tight smile."Good morning to you too, Marcus." Her gaze shifted to me. "How did you sleep, dear?"I nodded. "I slept well. Did something happen?""No. Alpha Damarus demanded your presence in the council room. I'm here to escort you." She picked up a plush red robe from the wardrobe, handing it to me. "Get dressed. We have no time to waste."Even though she'd denied it, I still had a gnawing feeling that something had changed.Marcus and I followed behind her after dressing hastily, sharing worried glances until we finally reached the council room.It was designed quite similarly to the dinin

Chapter 35: Alexandra

Their words are muffled at first, only allowing me to pick up a few sentences until their voices become clear."I'm telling you, he has something to do with this. He isn't the first person to bear the eye since we took it. Many others in our bloodline have done so. Why during his time? There's no mate father. Why can't you see that?" Lucien's voice rang out, trying desperately to persuade his father."Your brother would never turn on this pack. I might not know fully what he is capable of, but I know that. He is loyal.""How can you call the person who took your mate, this pack's luna's life loyal? He's bad news, father."I hear a scuffle, grunts of pain and flesh landing on flesh before Alpha Damarus growled. "Never speak of her. Do you understand, you little mutt? If you cross me again, I'll scrape all your teeth out and shove them down your throat."The words sent a shiver down my spine. Alpha Damarus, who remained calm mostly, grew bored so easily at the mention of his mate. How w

Chapter 36: Marcus

"How is that even possible?""You've asked that three times in the past hour. It's not helping, with all due respect Master Monrei." Alexandra snapped, raising the axe again. She'd been upset since the discovery of her wolf's disappearance, though she kept denying it. We both knew the truth.I groaned softly, nudging her with my nose."Stop it. We need to focus Marcus. You have to get stronger."Master Monrei stepped forward, glancing between Alexandra and my wolf. "Perhaps we shift to a less physically demanding training?""What are you saying?" Alexandra asked, throwing the axe at a tree nearby. It bounced off it weakly, landing at the foot and causing her to yell in frustration."I'm saying, let's work on your magic. We already know you can channel his power. Now if we can just find a way to control it. A way for Marcus to be able to let you in at will, maybe we might just have a weapon this man can't expect."Her teeth sunk into her lower lip, boots scratching the ground before wa

Chapter 37: Alexandra

The sliver of hope I got from knowing we could use Marcus to track and capture Roman was short-lived once we started training with actual magic.Marcus couldn't control anything. Master Monrei asked him to move a stool without touching it and he ended up smashing the whole left wall."Maybe this is a good thing? If he has no restraint then maybe that's exactly what we need."I shook my head, pointing at Marcus. "We can't do that. We have no idea where the mage has settled. For all we know it's close to where the town folk live. We need to think about their lives, minimal casualties."He nodded, sitting on the stoop and burying his face in his palms. "It wasn't like this before.""Many things could have caused this increase in your power. It could have been the sudden arrival of the mage, or maybe it's Alexandra being here. If she can channel your powers, who says she can't amplify them?"I sucked in a breath, my gaze snapping to his. "You think that's possible?"Master Monrei shrugged

Chapter 38: Alexandra

The tiny stone passage echoed the sound of my breathing as I crawled through the passage.I'd initially learned about the secret passageways that went through all the rooms on my first night, and up until now I had never had a reason to use them.Something caught on my robe, clipping it slightly. I turned, holding in a scream when my gaze fell on it.The thing that held the ripped-off fabric of my dress was the ribcage of what must have once been a man.The full skeleton lay there, slumped against the wall.I didn't let myself ponder on it for too long before continuing, keeping my gaze up.Finally, my feet came to a halt in the part of the passage connected to the walls in Alpha Damarus's room."Father, we're running out of time. What more do I need to pay to you for you to understand that Marcus is the cause of this? News has spread of another attack in the town square, and he just happens to be away from the palace when that happened?"My eyes narrowed as Lucien's voice began to ri

Chapter 39: Marcus

My wolf howled within me, furious to see my brother sitting on my throne. "Brother... what are you doing back here so early?" he asked, his voice projecting nothing but noise and fake confidence. "You sent the false alarm," Alexandra spoke first. "And you killed Alpha Damarus." Lucien's lips curved up into a cruel, disjointed smile. "I see I've found the little rat crawling in the walls." His gaze snapped to the guards that lined the walls. "Accusing your alpha of committing such a crime alone can be counted as treason. Arrest the bastard and my brother!" For a moment I was confused, even more when the guards began to approach us, spears in hand. "Are you all blind? I am your heir and now your alpha. Stand down!" I growled, getting more and more impatient. They hesitated before reaching for Alexandra, less because of them hearing me and more because of what they had heard about me. "He cannot do anything to you," Lucien's eyes flickered. One held a familiar glint while the oth

Chapter 40: Alexandra

My feet crunched against the twigs on the forest floor as chaos began to erupt all around me. I kept glancing back, hoping that Marcus or anyone would appear behind me. He'd stayed back to fight Lucien. There was no way to settle the dispute unless one of them was dead, which meant for him to become alpha... Lucien now had to die. I froze in my tracks, turning around and trying to catch sight of whoever it was. Hopefully they could help me. "Are you sure you saw her run this way?" A man said, deep and heavy. Definitely an alpha. "Ys of course I saw her." Another voice said, closer than the first one. "Let's just hurry up and get her back. Alpha Lucien promised to reward us heavily if we could. I can't believed Alpha Marcus fell for the diversion and actually sent her out." They laughed together, much closer than before now. My heart began to race even more, and despite how tired I was from running, my breath hitched, holding still. My gaze swept my surroundings, trying to find
